Holy planning time already!
The prereg (and hotel reg) for Gen Con Indianapolis this year starts on
February 16th (next Monday).
Week of Nightmares, anyone? I think it would be pretty fun, we should
have the hang of Indy by now, right? My vote would definitely be for
doing it at one of the con hotels, being downtown is tres convenient and
they seem to be pretty nice hotels.

Checks date.... sees they have chosen not to conflict with his anniversary

Will be there with my swimtrunks on!
Second the suggestion that we stay downtown. More important than that,
though, is that we all just agree on one place; last year's fragmentation
of downtown and out-of-town practically ruined it for me.

The L.A. crowd is in for downtown as well. Maybe we should just pick a hotel
and try to all book there. We don't want to go through GenCon's lottery if we
can avoid it.

I haven't talked to the Boston crew yet, but I've done "commuter
GenCon" for the past 3 years and I'm real sick of it. My vote would
definitely be for downtown.
GenCon's hotel lottery this year seems really lame. If I read it
correctly, you ask for a room when you get your pre-reg badge. Then,
one week before the Con, GenCon randomly assigns you a hotel room
somewhere downtown. Given GenCon's proven lack of organizational
skills in the past, I really don't trust them to handle my hotel room.
Hell, they couldn't get us a freakin' room for the NAC!
Of course, you don't get the GenCon discount when you bypass their
lodging lottery. But how useful is the discount when you don't know
what hotel you're staying at?

not going to Gen Con either :-(
Hi everyone!
i look forward to hanging out and playing many games!
lets definitely decide on a central hotel.
last year the ny city crew stayed at the westin hotel and was very
nice indeed!
You may want to consider this one since it was the middle hotel and
the nearest one direct from the hotel (through the pedestrian
overpass-tube) into the convention, leading to where the VTES pickup
games(and tournament)were held.
I might also want to mention it was the shortest distance to the
starbucks coffee shop ;)
point about reservations...
the hotel may have already blocked out-like they did last year-all the
rooms.
so you cant bypass GENCON and get any direct rooms yourself.
somebody try to reserve rooms now and see if you can get any during
that weekend....
(i would be down for half of the week of nightmares..if that maters in
terms of a head count)

I was thinking that might be the case. However, if we start reserving rooms
the Sunday night before and try to get a week, we might be okay. They won't
know we're there for the convention.

I spent some amount of time looking at this today and then neglected to
get to posting about it until now.
It appears to me that most of the downtown Indianapolis hotels do
already have their blocks of rooms reserved for GenCon (and therefore
not available to the general public) during the GenCon dates. For some,
it is possible to book rooms starting the Sunday before (I was looking
at Sun 15 August checkin to Sun 22 August checkout), but the rates are
either very high throughout or go very high (like $200+ per night) when
GenCon starts.
I'm not sure what the best solution is; I don't know how feasible it is
to book through the convention and then also book at the same hotel for
the Sunday-Thursday leading up to GenCon. It could be tricky (at least
for keeping the same room, if that matters much) since the hotels aren't
going to have all of GenCon's reservation information downloaded until
about a week before the con starts.
All that said, since hotel booking does start Monday, I think we should
probably all start booking rooms at one particular hotel on Monday for
GenCon, and then work out the run-up portion as we can.
I don't really have a preference as to which one, though - I think they
are all similarly priced (around $130 a night plus tax?) for the ones
immediately adjacent to the convention center. I stayed at the
Indianapolis Marriott Downtown last year; the New Yorkers stayed at the
Westin; those were both nice places. The Embassy Suites has free
parking (which most do not, although there were non-hotel surface lots
near the Convention Center that were fairly inexpensive) but is probably
a little farther away. Anyone want to nominate one? I would be willing
to defer to Nick and go with the Westin; it is definitely *very*
conveniently located. :-)
You can see the list here, if you want to check out the available Con
hotels:

hi Matt,
I think that is actually not the case. I think what they mean is that
the hotels themselves don't get the reservations downloaded until almost
convention time (it's just in GenCon's system), but you do know what
hotel you'll be at when you sign up. Last year I had a confirmation
email in February telling me that my room at the Marriott was reserved.
I definitely understand your concerns about their organizational
abilities, but I do have to give them credit for handling my hotel
perfectly well last time around. The VTES tournament locations, not so
much, but... :-)

Why don't you market this on your main page (i.e. the one that says "Major
Events: Championships)? I have always thought that when it comes to
marketing an event, there really is no such thing as giving out the time and
date enough.
How about a link on the Chamionships page not just to the calendar (which you
have in the Qualifiers section - I didn't even look that far, since I was
looking for info about the NAC), but also right under the word Championships
have a link to the calendar page you get when you use the sort criteria you
use below. That will take folks like me who don't think to use the calendar
page directly to the information they need. And then I won't have to bother
you with such trivia here on the newsgroup.
best -

Ok! I am IN on WoN!!!! Lets all get our scheuldes set and plan a Week
of Nightmares for Sun thru Sun.
I booked my Badge which allowed me to book a room at the Hyatt, but
ONLY the Hyatt! Not sure why only the Hyatt but I went ahead and
booked it anyway. I figure that if we are all close enough to each
other and the convention center, it really won't matter to much what
hotel we are staying at as long as we all agree on a location to meet
for game play. I'm attachet to the convention center so to walk
ANYWHERE local will be no trouble at all. Hell, I bet the steak
restraunt would let us play there again.
We'll figure it out as time gets closer. Just get the time off first
and get ready for another WoN!(you all know who you are:) But as David
C stated, out of town is no longer an option....or fun. Downtown
rocks.
David: may I suggest a FULL wet suit perhaps this time? ;)

Hi Mike!
Okay, I am shortly about to book at the Comfort Inn and Suites City
Centre (530 South Capitol Ave), about two blocks from the Convention
Center, based on the fact that it both has free parking and still has
4-person rooms available today - it looks like there's been quite a bit
of purchasing just between yesterday when I was looking and Right Now.
I suspect the reason only the Hyatt came up for you was because most
hotels don't seem to be bookable through the GenCon system starting any
earlier than Monday night? Though I'm not totally confident that I'm
right about that. But I seem to be able to book for the Sunday-Monday
nights through Comfort Inn's own website (night of 8/15 and 8/16) at
http://www1.choicehotels.com/, so we might have to switch rooms one
night but it should be all good after that.
I will now selfishly suggest that everyone else book at the Comfort Inn
and Suites City Centre as well, because it's pretty cheap ($130 for 4)
and would be convenient for me. :-) Also, if you are a person who
believes I am destined to organize your arrangements, you are probably
correct and I am about to book two rooms for this reason. Let me know
if you're expecting me to have hotel space for you and you may be in
luck. Don't wait until August to do it though, I'm expecting "my" rooms
to fill up before then. ;-)
Josh
week of nightmares 2004! sunday august 15 through sunday august 22!
(and don't book your flights home too early on the 22nd, there will be a
tournament that morning/afternoon!)
Comfort Inn Suites was very nice, I stayed
there last year. It was only a few minutes
walk to the Con and nice and comfortable.

An endorsement, excellent! My arbitrary choice is vindicated. :-)
Incidentally, I am as of today planning to stay at the Hyatt Regency
Columbus for Origins this year (June 24-28, staying till Monday
morning). They still have rooms! It's the cool wedge-shaped hotel
attached to the convention center! Sign up now!
