Here are three more questions I've considered: 1) So, what *is* a Black Spiral Buddy, anyway?? 3) What led to the ruling that the Leather Jacket won't prevent the damage from your *own* strikes? It's rather silly, on the common-sense side of things, to say that the Jacket can stop a 3pt Grenade if you're the recipient, but can't stop the 1 pt backwash if you're the attacker. Or can stop one side of a Burst of Sunlight, but not the other. Was this card somehow broken the other way?? 3. My (Jyhad) copy of Outcast Mage shows a cost of 3 while the Deck Monger and an earlier VEKN Tremere newsletter both list a cost of 2. I can't find anything in the errata. What *is* the cost?? However, you get people born in the waning moon, and those who defect, who are the bad guys. They dance the Black Spiral. In Jyhad, you make friends with one. A buddy. Hence, a black spiral buddy. Essentially, nasty bad guy werewolf. > > 3) What led to the ruling that the Leather Jacket won't prevent the > damage from your *own* strikes? A generic ruling which said "damage from a strike only applies to damage dealt by the opposing minion". > It's rather silly, on the common-sense > side of things, to say that the Jacket can stop a 3pt Grenade if you're > the recipient, but can't stop the 1 pt backwash if you're the attacker. > Or can stop one side of a Burst of Sunlight, but not the other. The generic ruling scuppers cards with serious downsides that werent' supposed to be got round with 1 blood and Skin of Steel. > 3. My cards are elsewhere. However, my gut reaction is that it is 3, but that probbaly the others are using the Wizards card text file (or similar) which may well be wrong. -- James Coupe

The Wizards card list shows a cost of 3 pool. At any rate, the card has not received any errata, so whatever is printed is what it costs. (Well, assuming that the V:TES version matches the Jyhad version, of course). -- LSJ (vte...@white-wolf.com) VTES Net.Rep for White Wolf, Inc. Nephandus is perhaps the best/most undercosted ally there is. And she is not unique! Let's see - 1 bleed, 1R, optional press, can diablerize for free (it's called something else, but is essentially the same), 2 life. *And she's not unique!!*. Compare to the political Ally, same cost, but unique, 3 bleed, 0 damage, and only 1 life. Perhaps the only thing working against her (Nephandus) is that she is a member of a pretty thin clan. But throw a couple of her out there, scatter Memories of Mortality liberally, and you have a very interesting situation! Not broken, but compared to other allies, undercosted (just like Ian Forestal, another Tremere! card). I just looked at my cards, and both Jyhad and VTES versions are 3 pool. I fixed the pool cost in Library Monger, sorry for the mixup guys. :^) In article <Pine.SOL.4.21.000316...@orange.csi.cam.ac.uk>, James Coupe <jr...@cam.ac.uk> wrote: > > 3. That's what I meant to say. :) (By the way, I didn't mean to suggest that Nephandus was weaker than Outcast as a _card_. Certainly not. But I think if you had your choice between the two pool paid, one might arguably take the Outcast before the Nephandus.) Fred

[ quoted text not captured ] I'd have to agree with you there. There might be situations particularly if playing a more combat oriented deck that you would use the Outcast mage *if* their costs were equal. But I think now that someone has figured out that the Outcast Mage costs 1 more than Nephandus, Neph is unquestionably the better deal. I personally think Neph should have been at least 3 or 4 cost, but no matter. [ quoted text not captured ]

I personally think >Neph should have been at least 3 or 4 cost, but no matter. I can't understand that last sentence. Most of the rest of the allies should cost _less_. Nephandus at 2 is fine. Even if allies started overrunning the game a bit, there's still cards like Cull the Herd, Slaughtering the Herd, Orgy of Blood, etc. to trim them back. Such cards are never seen as it is. Fred

Ethan: It was not only your web site (which, I may add, is excellent and has now become indispensable to me) that mis-priced the Outcast Mage, but a recent Tremere Newsletter also had it costed wrong (see http://www.waste.org/~xian/geek/jyhad/news/tremere1-5.html). This, of course, lead me to believe that the cost had changed somehow. Thanks again for your site, [ quoted text not captured ]
