I apologize for bringing this up if it has been already mentioned, but are
the abilities of Dreams of the Sphinx optional? i.e. Can someone tap thrice
the card and have 3 times a nine card hand size for example (or say, twice
to gain an additional pool if he has the Edge and once to have a 9 card hand
size), or must you use once each of its abilities? The card doesn't clarify
this..

It's up to you. You choose what the card will do for you. If you want to use
it only for pool gain, on ly for increased hand or only for additional
transfer, there's no problem at all.
As i read it you may tap it to gain one of the effects on the card, and
then you can not retap it until after your next untap phase.
An interesting question would be could you tap it in your untap, then
untap it and then tap it again, I'd assume not, but I can't remember if
untaping things is maditorily first and then you can order things as
you like.

You must indeed untap all of your tapped cards at the beginning of your
untap phase. All other effects happen after you have untapped.
Barring card text to the contrary, you do not have the option to not untap a
card.
Only after this are you allowed to order other effects that happen in your
untap phase as you like.

Correct.

All of this aside, DotS is still and quite possibly will be for some time
one of the best cards out there. Versatlity is the key, and DotS has it in
spades. Two in every deck. You can't not find a use for it (sorry for the
double negative).

Versatility is exactly the reason I never use this card, "one of the best cards
out there". Who can find a spot for one in a deck, let alone two, when there's
almost always a bunch of master cards out there better focused to the exact needs
of whatever type of deck you've created?

"Increase your hand size by two" is the function I find myself using
it most for, something which no other Master card can do.
This card is highly useful in toolbox decks, and is pretty damn good
in focused decks as well; it lets you get to the stuff you need RIGHT
then, and sits around impervious to everything except contesting until
you actually need it.

Hear ye... hear ye.... 3 good reasons to like Dreams of the Sphinx...
1. Increase hand size by two for remainder of turn... 6 extra cards quicker
can be the winner. Drawing key cards is critical to the game. Elder
Libraries can be Arsoned. FotBoN can be stolen. How can DotS not be useful
in a focused deck?
2. Art Museum ability... This can bring your focused vamps out maybe a turn
earlier? While the permanent versions, Eco-Terrorists, etc. may have the
ability to create a mini-blood machine, DotS is the quick fix for the Beast
on turn 1 with an Info-Highway, or a Volker without the IH. (if lucky enough
to be seated with 4 transfers to start)
3. Extra edge blood... yes not for everyone, but I played in a game just
one half hour ago, and used all three abilities once, if you have the edge
and the chance is there, you take it...
So, while I may agree that the 3rd ability may not be everyone's cup of tea,
I believe that you could use DotS easily in any deck.
Who can find a spot let alone two? I can. The majority of my decks are
less than 90 cards anyways.
I cannot make a deck without at least one, and I will not make a deck
without at least one. I am not trying to push the card on you Fred, I am
just hoping that I can make you see the true greatness of this card. Yes, a
Sudden Reversal can take it out, and yes it can be contested, but when all
is said and done I will support the Dreams to the ends of the Earth. I
truly believe that it is one of the best cards in the game.
BUT... this is my opinion, and your opinion may differ... which is great!
Remember opinions are worth exactly what you pay for them. Mine and yours.
NOTHING. This is why the game is so good! Conversations like this one.
Take no ill will from this Fred. I just love this card.

I didn't say it wasn't useful. Fact is, that's useful in any deck, focused or
not. Actually, it's more useful in the toolbox deck (as Derek indicated) because
there you're more likely to be looking for a specific card out an assortment,
while that's less often true while playing the focused deck.
But no matter. That wasn't even the point I was trying to make. I was trying to
point out that there's a limit to the number of master cards you want to put in
a deck. And I used the word "focused" in reference to the master cards you've
selected, not to describe the type of deck I was talking about. The point I was
trying to make is that in most any kind of deck, you can usually (at least in my
experience and given my judgment) find master cards that _FOR THAT DECK_ are more
important to be using than Dreams of the Sphinx. So after filling my deck with
those cards, there's no master slots left for DotS. It's "useful'. It's just not
useful enough.

Sorry. I remain unmoved. I tend to get sold on a card by watching someone
whip my butt with one. And that hasn't happened so far. (Though admittedly
the card drawing function, as with The Barrens and Fraggy, is a little bit subtle
and not very obvious to the user's opponent.)

Never do. This kind of stuff is a friendly pissing match about subjective
judgment. In the back of my mind, there's even a little hope that someone
will come up with a point to convince me about something. That's how you
use Usenet to learn about the game. The people who stand their ground are the
best resources on the net.

I find it highly useful in pure combat decks. When you draw it, you may need
the extra pool/transfer, or you might really need that extra hand size. This
might even change from turn to turn.

Yup. Barrens *and* DotS are great together. Rather subtle, admittedly, but
highly useful.

Well, I haven't really made a point, just pointed out my own experience.
YMMV. Still, especially in pure rush decks, where card slots are really
tight, and you never know exactly what you'll need, it really helps. I'd
prefer to have the Barrens out most of the time, but if I have both out,
that's even better. If I just have DotS, I'll usually use it to get the pool,
but in a tight spot, it can really clear up your hand.
