Hiya, sorry to ask a newbie question but my friends and I who took advanatge of the recent drop in price of Jyhad cards here in Adelaide, Australia (not sure how far ranging this price drop was) are stuck on one aspect of the game and that is strike order in combat... Not the order of the phases which is clearly understood from the rules but rather who has to declare their strike first... the rules state: " In general, the player of the acting minion must decide each phase if the minion will use a card or do something beforethe blocking minion. If the acting minion foregoes this opportunity to act first, it cannot reconsider and take action, except in direct response the blocking minion. " For us it seems that this part seemed to say the acting minion must choose the strike first, except for that very last part of the last sentence. This then seems to change it so that the acting minion can then sort ofreact after all? In the end we decided it must mean that the acting minion chooses what strike, if any (none chosen indicating hand damage etc) and then the blocker chooses their strike.. but the actining minion seems to then be able to respond to that blocking minion strike choice? Does this mean that the acting minion can choose to do no strike other than hand damage, the blocker choose a strike card and the actining minion can then also choose a strike card, but if the blocker hadnt used a strike card, the acting minion would then be forced to follow their original hand damage decision and not change it? Sorry, am a bit confused about this... Can it be clarified a little to prevent major, yet petty arguments during games pleased? ;-> Simidh @@@@@ (~)--(~) @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ @ (o o) ____ The Omputih @ @ (()) (____ . _ _ . __) )_ Beruang @ @ / ~~ \ _____) ( / ) ) ( (_/ / ) From Oz >;-> @ @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

It appears that most of your confusion stems from the fact that the above statement describes all the phases of combat, not just strikes. For example. The first phase of combat is to determine range. The acting minion has the opportunity to move to long range first. If he declines, the blocking minion has the opportunity to move to range. If the blocking minion refuses, the acting minion can not say 'hang on, I think I'll move out to range now' ie. the acting minion can only play a manouvre card after the blocking minion, if it is reacting to a card the blocking minion has played (note: the blocking minion can then play another card in reaction to the acting minions). Confused yet? The next stage is to choose strikes. The acting minion chooses first, note that 'hands' is actually a strike (just because you don't need a card doesn't make it any less of a strike). After the blocking minion chooses his strike, the acting minion can not react in any way to change its strike. After any additional strikes (totally separate to original strike), you go to the press stage where once again the acting minion gets first opportunity to press, followed by the blocking minion. Once again, similar to the range stage further presses may be played by both minions, but only in reaction to ones played by the other. > Does this mean that the acting minion can choose to do no strike other than > hand damage, the blocker choose a strike card and the actining minion can then > also choose a strike card, but if the blocker hadnt used a strike card, the > acting minion would then be forced to follow their original hand damage > decision and not change it? > > Sorry, am a bit confused about this... > The acting minion can not choose 'no strike', as I said before 'hands' is a valid strike. And no, irrespective of what the blocker does, the attacking minion cannot change its strike (although there is one particular card - from sabbat, I think - that allows you to do this. Not used too much though) Hope this helps and not confuses you even more. Martin.

After the blocking minion > chooses his strike, the acting minion can not react in any way to change > its strike. Correct. (Except for Primal Instincts, which allows the acting minion to change his strike by explicit card text) The default strike is a hand strike. If no other strike is chosen, then the hand strike is "chosen". -- L. Scott Johnson (vte...@wizards.com) VTES Net.Rep for Wizards of the Coast.
