Are Ghoul Retainers 'all that'?

I've been using the card 'ghoul retainer' in several games, and it seems to be one of the 'best' cards I'm playing. I wanted to make sure I'm playing it the right way. I believe Ghoul Retainer is the card I use. There are 2 'ghoul' cards pre-Sabbat, one causes 1 hand damage or uses a weapon of the vampire it belongs to, and the other is 'free' with 4 life and the ability to be burned to avoid any combat. I'm referring to the second card. (1) If the combat moves to long range, who determines if any retainer or the vampire with a retainer takes damage? The controller of the retainer, or the opponent's controller? Example: I have a ghoul on my Carlotta Giovanni, while in combat against Duck who is armed with a .44 Mag. Combat manuvers to long range. It is now possible for the firearm damage to be applied to the retainer rather than Carlotta. Do I decide if it's applied, does my opponent decide if it's applied, or, can it be either one of us? (2) Does aggravated damage affect retainers differently than 'normal' damage as far as somehow burning them quicker or the like? If I have been playing this retainer correctly, it basically acts as a long-range flak jacket with protection of 3. (If it takes 4 damage, it would die), because of the 'recharge' of retainer life. As a related question, if I HAVE been playing it correctly (I choose when it takes damage, and agg damage and normal damage are the same to a retainer), are there certain cards that cannot be applied against a retainer at long range? (ie: can they only absorb 'strikes', can they not absorb 'theft of vitae' or other 'blood' cards, etc). Thank you in advance for this help :) Gwen Morse --- Gwen Morse ... The opponent's controller chooses where the damage goes, after all, s/he's the one pointing the gun (or bow, or whatever nasty he's got pointed at you...) >Example: I have a ghoul on my Carlotta Giovanni, while in combat against >Duck who is armed with a .44 Mag. Only your opponent decides whether to direct damage at the vamp, or one of it's retainers... >(2) Does aggravated damage affect retainers differently than 'normal' >damage as far as somehow burning them quicker or the like? All retainers to date treat agg. and normal damage the same, i.e. both damage types remove life counters equal to the damage inflicted. >If I have been playing this retainer correctly, it basically acts as a >long-range flak jacket with protection of 3. (If it takes 4 damage, it >would die), because of the 'recharge' of retainer life. Sorry, while this might actually make retainers wothwhile, the rules don't allow for this use of them... >As a related question, if I HAVE been playing it correctly (I choose >when it takes damage, and agg damage and normal damage are the same to a >retainer), are there certain cards that cannot be applied against a >retainer at long range? As must be apparent by now, the terms of the combat card, whatever it may be are all set by the Player who plays it, including the target. Note, however that many combat cards (Pulled Fangs, Taste of Vitae, etc.) specify that they may only target vampires. Regards, R. No. VtES rulebook: 20.1. Retainers and Combat Each point of damage inflicted on the retainer removes one life counter, and when all the life points are gone, the retainer is burned. Aggravated damage is treated the same way as regular damage in this instance. (Card text excepted, of course: Spiritual Protector, e.g.) -- L.
