Does combat occur after using The Kiss of Ra at minor?
I don't see why combat wouldn't occur but my playgroup would like
confirmation. I guess the reason for suspecting that no combat
occurs is that otherwise the minor effect sucks just a tad too
much to be of any use. ;)
The Kiss of Ra
Cardtype: Action Modifier
Cost: 3 blood
Discipline: Fortitude
Only usable when a vampire who does not have Fortitude attempts to
block this acting minion. The blocking vampire burns 2 blood, and
the action is now blocked. (S) As above, and the blocking vampire
goes into torpor.

Yup.

Yah, you really want superior here. It's like inferior Pulse
of the Canaille.

Right into torpor. The action is still blocked, however, as per card
text. (for whatever that's worth)
Actually, then, if you give Donal O'Connor ("Any vampire dumb enough to
block Donal burns 1 blood before combat begins") superior Fortitude, and he
tells, say, Gratiano, to Kiss his Ra, Gratiano has to burn 2 blood for the
Kiss of Ra, and then go to torpor. Somewhere in there he has to burn
another blood. *When* exactly *is* "before combat begins"? If it's *just*
before, it's arguable that combat never began, and so the timing is
ambiguous. Arika, who doesn't have to Kiss Donal's Ra, could play
Obedience, where again combat doesn't ever begin, so "before combat begins"
is ambiguous again.
And what if Arika blocks, but Donal plays Change of Target? (about the
only damn card that "beats" Obedience) Does Arika burn the blood?

Straight to torpor, do not pass go, do not collect 200 blood points.

No. Combat occurs only after a successful block or as given
on card text. Kiss of Ra is played before the block is
successful (and blocks the action itself).

Correct. (And the action "becomes" blocked, by card text).

No. He'd only have to burn the additional blood you're referring
to when he blocks Donal. With Kiss of Ra, he never successfully
blocks.
> exactly *is* "before combat begins"? If it's *just* before, it's
It's just letting you know that it happens when the block succeeds,
rather than after the block (after combat is over). [RTR 30-MAY-1996]

Arika would still have to burn a blood for blocking Donal as
soon as Donal acknowledges that he is blocked.

Yes.
