It might just be us but the general feeling was that artwork on the NoR
expansion was the weakest for a while. I am sure Larry Snelly has
entered a new 'Slop it on and take the cash' Period comparable to Piet
Mondrian drawing 3 red lines and a square on a white canvass and asking
for 2 years average income for it (having said that I quite like
Hannibal137 and Composition with Red, Blue, and Yellow is okay).
Over the years Jyhad artwork has been varied. We had that great phase
where they pursuaded John Bolton and a few others to do some great
artwork and we had the early Quinton Hoovers and when Larry Snelly was
misprinted as Larry Schnelli his art was great (Smudge you still reign
supreme). Then we had Agatha et al. Things started to look up then we
had the Christopher Shy monopoly and the chris and Larry duopoly.
Surely WW can fork out some cash and get some decent artists in ... and
how about consistancy across a clan. I for one would love to see the
next expansion (Return of the Sabbat or whatever) feature 14 new
Lasombra all drawn by Brom or a baker's dozen Tzimisce penned by Tim
Bradstreet. Even if these guys are too expensive there are a host of
top notch comic artists that I am sure would appreciate the extra cash
Travis Charest, John Cassaday etc etc.
Just tell me who I need to sleep with to make this happen....

I rather like the NoR art, with the exception of Inflict. My only
artisitic disappointment is that Expiate is a useless card with great
art. NoR is very evocative of the dark and desperate gothic-punk that
turned me onto Jyhad a dozen years ago.

Actually, I'd rather they didn't do this. It gets boring.
My only artistic begging is for Combo (and Reflex) cards to have their
own background art.

me too.... and my huch tells me that Expiate will see play in the

when some new card comes and makes it worth-playing. Hold on to them.

i would love to see the next expansion come at Christmas, instead of
late Summer.

Hmm..... Greg I think we have to disagree here. Larry Snelly's art for
the Imbued is just lazy, he has obviously just taken photos and over
painted them with out a lot of effort. Whilst this is a step up from
all his artwork were he just takes a photo sticks it in photoshop and
puts some wiggles over the top, it is still lazy. Now there is a
certain punk esthetic in this (produce crap and charge money for it)
but surely we can see past the hype?
I for one am not too bothered about artwork on transitary cards,
actions, reactions etc as they come into your hand then pass away but
permanents need to be well drawn. Can you imagine spending a whole game
looking at Leaf "Potter116" Pankowski as one of your key minions?
As for the idea that a single clan done by a good artist for one
expansion would be boring I have but two words to say to you
Christopher Shy...

With the sole exception of Inflict, I'd say Larry's is consistently the
worst art in the set. But, in general, the art is the first time we've
seen a consistent mood and theme in a long time.

I have difficulty imagining putting her in a deck at all.

...who makes babies cry with the boringness of his art. When a friend
of mine told me he liked Shy's artwork, I wanted to hit him until he
showed me the stuff Shy did for Mage. Then I realized that Shy is
actually a good artist, he just hates VTES players.

This could indeed be the case:-)
I actually think that Larry is a good artist, Smudge, Donnal O'Conner
etc but they just get away with too much. I think when the order comes
in for another 30 vamps they just plow through it.
Look at the quality of the Bradstreet stuff on the new WoD covers. Why
can't we get a bit more of that.
I really dont think that your statement is irrelevant. Aside from
playing to win trading cards have an aesthetic side. I want nice
pictures. At the moment i am happy that the Christopher shy phase has
ended and that Larry has again taken a brush into his hands.

Not sure about playing to win, prefer playing to enjoy :-) and I still
think Larry needs to take stock of his legacy and decide if he is as
happy with Leaf as he was with Donnal O'Connor.

As a self-proclaimed art connoisseur, I have to agree that overall NoR
was a let down in terms of art (though Legacies was quite good artwise
- meant to make a thread about it but never got around to it).
I think Snelly is a great artist, but I concur that NoR isn't exactly
the best of his work. At least he's doing painting however, which is
infinitely better than photoshop!
And yes, I am aware of the hideous monstrosity known as Leaf Pankowski.
Honestly, it looks like a photoshop project gone bad. Take a face,
paste it on a body - only problem is that in this case, the two really
don't match...

Teach me to write stuff from memory but Cop90 ain't much better:-)
I am really looking at this as a comparison to the Other Game. In the
first release there there was really bad artwork, Ironroot Treefolk
anyone.... , but as time and money went by they got a lot stronger and
now you see very few terrible Kolbold artwork and a lot more names
doing work. Surely Jyhad has been arround long enough to benefit from
the same process.

Don't these people know not to show pictures of attractive women to
game players. It only gets them over-excited. Especially if there is
even a remote chance that they might meet them at a convention one day
:-)

The benefit isn't automatically applied just for "being around a long
time."
Magic can afford expensive artists because they sell so many cards.
V:TES cannot.
Don't actually know what artists are paid for Magic cards but they
could probably even get the artists to do the art for free. If you do
Magic art, the door is opened for selling large quantities of prints
and other money-making merchandise. I don't think V:TES has that same
appeal for big name artists.

Well, 3 of the 4 have already done art for cards, and the 4th (Brom)
probably doesn't need the work (assuming he's not committed
contractually to other CCGs) seeing as WW is a probably lot less
financially flush than the places he's done stuff for lately...

Actually Brom did do card art. Check our FPG's Guardians and Dark Age
CCGs (both were discontinued after FPG unfortunately pulled the curtain).
By the way, Guardians is, according to some opinions, the ccg with the
best art.

Bye,

Actually I have nothing against Leafs art. It is good that not EVERY
female character is a super model. It gets boring after awhile after
all. :)

I meant '3 of the 4 have already done art for Jyhad/VTES cards',
specifically.

Bored? Of looking at pretty people? What blasphemy! =P
Anyway, even with that attitude, that's what the Nosferatu / !Nosferatu
/ Samedi / Harbingers are for! They were invented solely to take up the
"ugly quota"! ;)
I agree on the artwork. I really seemed weak in general.
About one painter for a clan: a good idea. Wasn't it already done in LoB?

And Bloodlines and Final Nights. This is how I know I don't like it.
[ quoted text not captured ]
[ quoted text not captured ]
When I say a clan drawn by the same artist I don't mean Christopher Shy
draws them all ...
You sure that had single artists per clan in Final Nights? Soo long ago
I can hardly recall. Surely not in Bloodlines ... are all 3 group 2
Trujah drawn by the same guy ? hmmm.. wonder if there is a web list of
these someplace. Surely some kid with aspergers has record all these
somewhere.
I thought LoB art was better but maybe a little fussy. I think that the
Laibon art in general is good but doesn't convert well to small cards
(there are exceptions in both directions).
I was thinking more of engaging signiture artists for a single
expansion. So say you do 3rd edition and manage to get Brom to do the
Lasombra, Bolton to do the Tzim etc. I don't think that would be boring
Why can't more of the minion cards have artwork like this -
http://www.white-wolf.com/index.php?line=news&articleid=103
I don't even care if they use artwork they use in other parts of their
portfolio (obviously artist needs to agree). Just give us good artwork.

Check it out. The artist is listed right after each card's text. To
answer your question, no the 3 Trujah were not drawn by the same
artist. However, all the Ahrimanes in Bloodlines were done by Lawrence
Snelly, and all the Nagaraja in the set were also done by the same
person (though I don't recall who).
Haven't checked all the other clans, but at least a few of the
Bloodlines had the entire clan drawn by one artist.
