So I control a vamp holding Talbot's Chainsaw, with a Memories of Mortality on him. I also control an ally. Can the 3 damage I do with Talbot's target my ally and the ally take no damage? We think no, because the wording on MoM says "reduce damage to 0", and I think somewhere (please cite if possible LSJ - thanks) it says that "reduce" is treated exactly the same as "prevent", and you can't prevent damage outside of combat except with Blood Tears. How'd we do? Thanks, Chris -- Tammy Martin 5'7" Alexander Shorb 2'10" Chris Shorb 5'11" Shameless plug: <http://www.graphicnovels.com/>

No, since Memories reduces only the "damage the vampire inflicts on allies", whereas Talbot just says "a minion you control takes 3 damage". And * Damage is only considered to have come from a minion if the damage is from a strike or if an effect specifically states that the damage is dealt by the minion. Damage from other effects is considered "environmental," and has no particular source. Reduce is not the same as prevent - unpreventable damage could be reduced. You're probably thinking of Flesh of Marble. In the Jyhad version it "reduced" damage, but in the V:TES printing it prevents damage. BTW: There is no rule against preventing damage outside of combat - it's just that Blood Tears is currently the only prevention effect that can be applied outside of combat. -- LSJ (vte...@wizards.com) V:TES Net.Rep for Wizards of the Coast.
