This was posted to AOL on 4/12/95. Apparently people at WotC are still
considering changing the backs of the Library Cards.
Sigh.

Wizards of the Coast is still deliberating on what to do with the backs of
the cards when Jyhad becomes ``Vampire: The Eternal Struggle.'' We have
received a great deal of feedback so far, but opinions are still divided
-- so we're taking the question directly to you, the people who play
Jyhad.
Give your opinions -- and reasoning behind them -- on the following
options:
1. Keep the card backs the same, and explain in the rules why ``Vampire:
The Eternal Struggle'' cards say ``Jyhad'' on the back.
2. Change only the vampire (gold-backed) cards to read ``Vampire: The
Eternal Struggle.'' The library (green-backed) cards would still read
``Jyhad.'' Again, an explanation would be in the rules.
3. Change all of the card backs to read ``Vampire: The Eternal Struggle.''
4. Change all of the card backs to read ``Vampire: The Eternal Struggle,''
but adapt game play just enough so that different card backs won't make a
difference.
PLEASE E-MAIL YOUR RESPONSES DIRECTLY TO ME AT WO...@AOL.COM.
Remember, if you don't express your opinions, you're stuck with what
others decide for you ...

Thanks Curt.
Sigh. Oh well - at least it looks like they _might_ consider not
changing the backs at all. My input is already sent - everyone else get
yours in too ASAP, and vote for choice #1!

I read through Tom Wylie's newest release info from last week. Here is my
interpretation of his comments on the cards. The backs of the vampire
cards will change to say V:tES instead of Jyhad, while the backs of the
minion cards will still say Jyhad. But the _borders_ of the minion cards
will change. So all Master cards will have the same border; Equipment
cards will have a different border; Action Modifier cards will have a
different border... so on and so forth. This would mean that cards are
more readily identifiable as to type when played, instead of having to
look for the symbol alone, we will be able to see the symbol and a
specific border for each minion card type. And we will be able to
integrate earlier versions of cards into V:tES because the backs will be
the same.
That is how I interpreted the relevant section of his news release. I
could, of course, be wrong.
Is this pretty accurate Tom?

This is superfluous. They should know clearly already why players
don't want card backs changed. Even a 7-yr.-old kid can tell you
why.

Explantion? Isn't the truth a good enough explanation?
Do WotC people have problems telling the truth?

Yep. All cards will become face up in all circumstances. I can't see
any other way.

It seems that we will be stuck with "what others decide for us",
regardless of whether we express our opinions or not.
Now, I'm feeling like blaming the players, if any of them are
foolish enough to re-invest in Vampire:TES should they change
the card backs. WotCoa$t can't become god unless players
let them ...

I would just like to add that border colors CAN be sometimes discerned when you
look at the deck from the side... I just hope they choose nice looking colors,
and ones that aren't too obviously contrasting.

This is the one for me. 3 Reasons why:
1) There is *no* reason why the card backs need to be changed. Presumably,
the game's name is being changed to Vampire: TES because potential players
didn't know that Jyhad is about vampires (earlier claims about offended
Islamic people having pretty much melted away). Such players will *never*
see the backs of the cards until they already buy them (since if they see
people playing and ask about it, they're going to be told "It's about
vampires"). They will learn that V: TES is about vampires from the
advertisements, the boxes, and the *outside* of starter and booster backs.
Changing the card backs won't help, since if they're looking at the back,
they'll also presumably look at the front, and figure it out that way.
2) Keeping the card backs the same, and explaining to new players why this
is the case, will impress them with WotC's attitude towards their
customers. Don't overlook the goodwill that can be generated by taking a
strong stand against invalidating earlier purchases. This tells new
players that you won't invalidate *their* purchases either just because
the folks in Marketing get nervous.
3) There are a lot of Jyhad players out there who have lost interest in
the game since they heard that their cards were being marked for
obsolescence. I know just here around George Washington University I could
round up a dozen people to start playing Jyhad again if they knew that
their cards would plug into expansion sets and tournament rules. Multiply
that over the entire U.S. and Canada, and that's a lot of players to buy
boxes of expansion sets.

I will not buy any expansions if they make my existing cards obsolete. By
changing the card backs, other players will know what kind of cards I will
have in my deck, or which clan i am about to play.
This sucks, and if they have to change the game like that, forcing
everyone to buy all new cards, then I will simply no longer buy cards, and
play with the ones i have.

There will be a press release about the card backs issued in the next
couple of days. I'll try to get it posted here ASAP after it is sent
out to the distributors, etc.
