LSJ. Q: Optional or Mandatory??!

I was just wondering about retainers, equipment, inherent abilities, etc.etc. Obviously a Methuselah can't "turn" off the inherent abilities of vampires (i.e. +1 intercept for Anton or +2 Bleed for IC's). The opposite must apply for equipment, in that they are all optional (with the exception of The Soul Gem which is Mandatory). But how about retainers? Do you actually need to use a given retainer? Lets say you previously "equipped" with a Marijava Ghoul - making all your presence bleeds at a default +1 stealth - can this retainer be "turned" off?? Or is its use mandatory after equipping with it?? Could a vampire refuse to receive the blood from the faithful servant while in torpor or ... ?? Please advice! Kind Regards and thanks in advance!
