A card lasts for the whole combat when it says that it lasts for the
duration of the combat.
If not specified, always assume that the duration of a combat card expire at
the end of the round.

Whole combat. (card text: "During this combat" and "each round")

While this is being brought up...If DotB is played at superior and the
opposing player taps the Arboretum in response, does the opposing
vampire still take a point of damage? My guess is yes, but I wanted
to verify.

Tap the Arboretum! Tap the Arboretum! Hehehe. But good question. I assume
you've looked at the card text more recently than I have, because I keep
thinking that it says tap as combat is entered or something, but from the way
you're asking this, I'd bet it reads before range is determined, doesn't
it...

ayup...
Card Title: Elysium: The Arboretum
Card Text: Master: unique location
Only usable before range is determined. Tap to end
a combat involving a vampire you control. Any
vampire can burn this card with a successful vote;
calling this vote is a +1 stealth action.
It certainly is a valid response to someone else's pre-range cards.

Of course, "In response" doesn't mean your effect will resolve first -
this isn't Magic the Gathering, afterall. So though it is a valid
reponse, it's not always an effective one (which is why it doesn't work
against the damage caused by DotB, or say, Blood to Water.) It's good
against Torn Signpost, though, even though TS's effect still occurs.

...and we can all be grateful for that.

Actually, that is a very _good_ time to use it. In the JOL game (jol76) that
spawned this discussion, I'm playing a Ventrue with Assault Rifles deck. If
DotB gets played, I can't use my bug guns so I take my 1 damage and get
away from the big mean Gangrel.
Against Blood to Water, even better. Sure I may lose my blood, but I won't
get burned by the Walk of Flame that's sure to follow.
There is one thing that the Arboretum can't help you with is the Dawn Op,
Skin of Night, Weather Control combo. Before range is determined, the
blocking vampire goes to torpor. To put it simply, "Good Night, John Boy."

It isn't applicable after Blood to Water, since the latter is not played
until after range is determined. [RTR 13-NOV-96]

oops. *grin* caught me not giving this statement much thought.

What about the big mean Tremere with Animailsm? Huh? Hehe.

LSJ already got you on this one...plus it's second round...hmm...we've always
played Elysium right before first round. I guess there isn't a restriction
against using it before range on the second round, is there? Seems like a
waste of time/resources, though...

Damn...I knew I should have played that deck...but I jst *had* to try my new
Ani/Cel/Tha deck, didn't I? Oh well...
