If my Ananasi takes a succesfull Shepherd's Innocence, am I allowed to put the equipment/retainer on him? Relevant card texts: Ananasi Vampirephile Type: Ally Requires: Guruhi Cost: 4 pool Werewolf with 4 life. 2 strength, 1 bleed. Ananasi gets an optional maneuver each combat. Once each combat, she can burn a life during the press step to get a press and set the range in the next round of that combat, if any. She can gain a life as a +1 stealth action. Once each turn, she may play a card that requires basic Animalism [ani] as a vampire. Rarity: LoB:R Shepherd's Innocence Type: Action Requires: Animalism Cost: 2 blood +1 stealth action. [ani] (D) Take control of a card in play that requires Animalism. If it is an equipment or retainer card, place it on any vampire you control. [ANI] Take control of all cards in play that require Animalism. Place the equipment and retainer cards on any vampires you control. Rarity: DS:C2 Tenth:B

The card she plays as a vampire considers her a vampire. Hmmm... but the Ananasi text does not include the text "may burn life as blood" text, and Shepherd's Innocence costs 2 blood. Is there nowadays some general ruling that says that "may play cards as a vampire" also means that the ally may burn life as blood? I presume there is, just making sure here. //Petri

[ quoted text not captured ] Yes, from the rulebook [1.6.3] "Some allies have the ability to play certain cards "as a vampire." In these cases, the ally is treated as a vampire for all effects generated by the play of the card. The ally's life represents his blood (to pay costs, for example). Any blood he gains or loses as a vampire equates to a gain or loss of life for the ally. For purposes of that card, the ally has a capacity of 1 by default (for use if the card requires an older vampire or a vampire of a given capacity). The ally is treated as a vampire only when playing the card and, for cards such as actions and strikes that are not resolved immediately, for the resolution of the effect. In particular, the ally is not treated as a vampire for effects of the card once it's in play or for lingering effects generated by the card. If the ally gains life in excess of his capacity, it doesn't drain off, and if the effect inflicts aggravated damage on the ally, he burns life as normal. However, if the effect would send the ally to torpor, then he is burned instead."

Thanks. //Petri

In this case, it was all repetitive text on a lot of ally cards. Having to put that much text on an ally limits the creative things you can to make them powerful, or to limit their power. So LSJ shoved it in the rulebook. Ananasi Vampirephile is probably a good example of one with a few interesting abilities that might have been quite a squash, otherwise. -- James Coupe PGP Key: 0x5D623D5D YOU ARE IN ERROR. [ quoted text not captured ] So the Anansi Vampirephile is unable to play Shepherd's Innocence because it costs two blood and she is effectively a one-capacity vampire.

Unless card text specifies otherwise, cards don't care about your capacity. They just care about whether you can pay the cost. [ quoted text not captured ]
