Hi,
I've just unearthed a hoard of Jyhad cards that I bought in the UK sometime
around 1995 (could be a year or so either way..) and I was wondering if
anyone in this newsgroup would be kind enough to help me with a couple of
questions?
First off, how do I go about identifying what edition I have? I bought all
the cards in about a 6 month period, so I guess they'll all be the same
edition.
Secondly, is there a market for this kind of stuff? I have around 400 cards,
probably at least 200 individual cards. I think there's about 3 starter
decks in there and the rest were booster decks.
I'm going to catalogue them and stick them on eBay but I was wondering if
it'd be best to sell them off in smallish lots or as a collection.
If anyone takes offence at me being so flagrantly capitalist, then all I can
say in my defence is that I've got a bad retro gaming habit that needs
feeding.
Oh yeah I've also got a naff wee sack full of glass beads.. blood counters
or something.
Feel free to get in touch if you're interested.
Cheers - Jiroczech

Do they say Jyhad on the back? Or V:TES?
If Jyhad, it's the first printing. If V:TES, name half a dozen. It'll
probably be the re-printing of the first set (with a few changes).

Not a great deal, though half a dozen "key" rares will be good if you
have them - Freak Drive and Temptation of Greater Power being the main
two - because they're quite sought after for specific decks.

Probably your best bet is to poke eBay and see what the record is with
V:TES/Jyhad sales.

Oh.. I have Freak Drive, but not Temptation of Greater Power, what are the
other rares? I noticed someone on eBay paying a lot for Theft of Vitae,
which seems pretty common.. guess it's a useful card for a deck?

Erm, ones that seem to do quite well are:
Ecoterrorists
Arcane Library
Art Museum
Freak Drive
Temptation of Greater Power
Betrayer
The various political action cards called <Clan> Justicar
Renegade Garou
Soul Gem of Etrius

It's uncommon, it's useful in decks *but* it's also easy to get hold of.
Remember, boys and girls, eBay has lots and lots of people willing to
pay silly money for something because they haven't worked out what it
would cost them to get it new and just out-bid everyone else instead.

That was probably *Taste* of Vitae. That would be an uncommon from that set,
not rare.

Actually, Taste of Vitae is rare in both Jyhad and V:TES as they hadn't

Taste is most certainly uncommon in BOTH jyhad and Vtes. Along with
eagles sight, immortal grapple, and several other cards that are often
passed off as rares, because they are useful and in high demand.(ie
second/5th traditions)
It is included in the !brujah starter. Not sure about the Giovanni
one?
Anytime there is doubt, check the card lists at:
http://www.white-wolf.com/VTES/home.html
The cards are all listed, with their official rarities.

According to White Wolf's website:
The Jyhad/V:tES version of Taste of Vitae was Uncommon. (Though I always
suspected it was somehow *less* common than that).
It doesn't show in the card list for Sabbat, so presumably was not
reprinted.
It was in Sabbat War, exclusively in the !Brujah starter (not boosters
IIRC).
There was no reprint in the Final Nights starters. I think it probably
should have been... but have no complaints. On a related topic, what cards
do you guys think seriously *need* to be reprinted?
I'm thinking:
-Freak Drive
-Embrace
-Rotschreck
-the 7 or so cards that were included in unlimited but not in Jyhad (Archon
Investigation, etc.)
Of course, if they are reprinting the entire set (hint hint) then the
question is moot, though obviously some of the rarities need to be changed.
Also, I think some cards *don't* need to be reprinted yet again. I have
enough Ascendance and The Barrens, thank you very much.

No, Taste of Vitae really was uncommon in Jyhad and VTES. Check the
rarities on the White Wolf checklists (www.white-wolf.com/vtes; click
on Jyhad and V:TES under the card sets heading).
It was still probably not available in sufficient numbers, but it wasn't
an actual rare. Maybe you're thinking of Immortal Grapple which was in
fact rare in Jyhad and V:TES, reprinted as an uncommon in Sabbat?

Immortal Grapple is R2 in Jyhad, R in V:tES, uncommon in The Sabbat, and
uncommon/Precon-Brujah in Sabbat War.
Eagle's Sight is uncommon in V:tES and Jyhad.
All Traditions are uncommon, except the First, which is rare.

Eagle Sight, Telepathic Misdirection, Clan Impersonation, a number of the
utility rares from Jyhad such as Ivory Bow, Weather Control, Horrid Form
(because the card should be easy to get), Derange and any other useful Sabbat
rares not reprinted in SW. These come to mind, I'm sure there are many others.

Most important. You can use an Embrace in basically EVERY deck. (I'd
even put one into a Rush combat deck, since once you've got the guy out of
minions, that extra 1 bleed can make a big difference. Peter still
wouldn't, so I'd trust him more for advice. =)

True...Exactly how rare is a reprinted card, that is only in the
preconstructed starters, would you think?
I mean, of course you *always* get that card. But then how many $10

Presumably, if the base set is reprinted, and I know we all want that, there
would be at least 4 and probably 7 or 8 (including Caitiff?) pre-constructed
Camarilla clan decks.
If this were the case, the formula used with Final Nights would work well
here. Add one or two Aid from Bats to the Nosferatu or Gangrel starters and
keep them out of the boosters entirely. That way they're still in reach of
those who didn't have access to the limted/unlimited set, for which that set
would be primarily aimed at.
I know anyone who has been playing for ages probably has a metric tonne of
Aid from Bats, but the last time they were printed was for unlimited, so
presumably there are plenty of newer players who do not own any. Then again,
those new players could also just ask one of the older players to share
theirs... I'm sure most veterans will happily give away Aid from Bats in
exchange for a new person to play with.
Which brings up the question... do we need the entire base set to be
reprinted or just the ones people need? I remember there was a Magic
expansion (Legends? Not sure...) that reprinted the cards that people were
demanding. I also seem to recall that this was *not* well-received by
people, but don't remember why. Would something similar be a good idea for
this game?
I mean, personally... I would be happy to see more of the uncommon/rare
cards that have so far been mentioned, but I would also like to see the new
players having access to the basic cards needed to compete with the
veterans.
If we can eliminate the basic cards that have been reprinted already in
Sabbat War and Final Nights, we have a lot more room to maneuver. For
example, I think we can all agree that Undead Strength does *not* need to be
reprinted. Most players should theoretically have access to any one of the
five sets in which it has been printed.
Personally, I was very happy with the way the old and new cards were
distributed in the Final Nights pre-cons. Whoever designed the decks (LSJ?)
seems to have balanced nicely the Ancient Hearts/Dark Sovereign cards with
some of the new utiltiy cards of each discipline. It must have been a hard
balance to reach. Increased Strength was a good choice to include for
example since it only appeared previously in Ancient Hearts. Other old
cards, which for whatever reason did not make the cut could also make their
appearance in the new set, Spiritual Intervention being a good example
(possibly filling the slot which removing Undead Strength would make).
Thoughts?

Alas they reprinted a lot of garbage ! almost all commons were wallpaper

Yeah, your theory is quite good. But i only fear the rarity thing... I think
the veterans, who buy most of the cards, will not buy this set if there is
no powerful, uber rare cards (11th tradition : untap with +2 intercept and

It was called chronicles? And it was ill received because, I believe,
it reprinted cards that only the people that had been playing for a
long time had. Also..just try to imagine if you had traded all you
own to complete your one deck, using 15 freak drives. Tomorrow WW
decides to drop them to common in a new set. You could have saved
your other 15 rares that you just traded away. Kind crummy for the
old players if you see my point.
Personally, I would like there to only be preconstructed decks.
Random cards are annoying. I wish everyone had 15 freak drives and
could just make decks, and now have to worry about R1's vs R2's or who
has the most cash.

Hrm. I don't seem to have that problem. Something about a milk crate
filled to almost overflowing, followed by my mantra, "Take what you
need," tends to not meet any resistance at all.

Quite the contrary.
As one of the veterans (I assume one can claim the title if one played
when Jyhad was still in print) I'll buy 5-7 boxes of cards shortly after
a expansion comes out. After that, if I'm still wanting multiple copies
of a particular card, I'll aggressively trade for it or buy singles.
I'm also grateful that there is no such thing as an all-powerful, uber
rare card. In VTES, it appears that the rares are not more powerful, but
rather are more specialized or gimmicky.

Hey, why not just sell some "utility packs" with bunches of useful
cards? Print up some labeled (or transparent, then you only need one
label for all of them) boosters with 11 5th Tradition, 11 Freak Drive,
11 Immortal Grapple, 11 different Praxis Seizures, and a few other rares
that everyone clamors for. To Hell with the collectors, let's help the
people that actually play this game, of which there are far more.
Oh, and as to cards that should be modified when reprinted, the
Sengir Dagger should be changed to strength aggravated damage, to bring
it in line with the Femur of Toomler and the new Kali's Fang. (Given
the latter change, the former is likely, but I want to make sure it
doesn't get oversighted.)

Unfortunately, I doubt that these "player-oriented" ideas would be very
economically feasible. Pre-constructed starters don't sell as well as starters.
And if everyone can easily get 11 IG's, 5ths, etc., then they aren't likely to
buy as much stuff, meaning less revenue and profits for White Wolf.

Cardtype: Equipment

Unique melee weapon. <Strength aggravated damage> each strike.

Yes. The V:TES version moved to strength (then called "hand damage") from

You buy and trade shortly after a *new* expansion comes out. If it is all
reprint, i doubt you'll buy 5 to 7 boxes, unles you have a policy of "15
surprise influence & 15 political backlashes in each deck"... The veterans
want to see new cards. That's all. And they want these cards to be powerful.
I mean there is no point in buying tons of useless cards. If WW doesn't put
a lot of useful cards in all the commons, unco and rare slots, i doubt any
seasoned player will ever buy this reprinted base set expansion, especially
when you can buy old jyhad booster boxes at ridiculous low price.

I'm sorry but in V:tes, face it, there are all powerful uber rare cards. The
only difference with other CCG's is that
1-they are often specialized version of more common cards (see Trap/conquer
the beast, Torn signpost/Fist of death, Thadius/outcast mage...)
2- they often require other cards to work properly (Temptation of Greater
power requires Justicar, Smiling Jack requires special deck building,
Anathema requires a vote to be called and passed succesfully then rush
action etc...)
3- they are unique or can be played once (Giant's Blood, Art Museum, society
of Leopold...)
There are still plenty of rare wich are very good by themselves and don't
need combinations to be effective : Temptation, Freak drive, Mind Rape,
Golconda, Ivory bow... I won't try to list them all. But rares are often
good cards [set twisting the knife and Mistaken identity aside, willya ?
=) ]
Just wanted to confirm my opinion that V:tes is not the dreamland of broke
CCgamer... If you don't have the money, there are a lot of decks you'll
actually never play. It's part of the CCG selling scheme mechanism....

The traders hated it, becausee all the power cards plummeted in value.

Yes, IMO, very much so. i think the basic set should be:
Clan decks for all the basic Camarilla clans. PLAYABLE clan decks. i
will help you to make them, WW, for FREE, and YOU DON'T EVEN HAVE TO
ACKNOWLEDGE ME!!!!! They do, i think, need to be playable. The ones
you've made so far are a lot of fun, but not playable without a
SERIOUS tweak.
Boosters with a combination of:
Rough Stuff - ToGP, Freak Drive, Day Op, Ecoterrorists, Protected
resources etc
Useful vanilla - WWEF, Change of Target, Rack
Caitiffs
Weird stuff - Betrayer, Rotshreck ..... stuff which makes people think
...
A VERY SMALL selection of new stuff, suggest total of 8 vamps, 1
master, 1 non-discipline card, i vote and 1 card for each discipline.

I would guess that a number of veterans would want to see a number of
