Using an Assamite deck the other day I came across an interesting
question. On my draw I was clogged with master cards (bad thing for a
combat deck). My predator pulled out a one cost pander, so to dump a
master card I put a contract on him and announced the vampire would be
Abdal (something-er-other) who was waiting in my uncontrolled region.
There was discussion about the legality of this but card text says,
choose an assamite (doesn't say in play). Later Abdal came under my
control and slaughtered the little pander.
So the question is: Does the assamite you choose have to be in play?
(Must you discard it if there are no assamites in the game at all?)
Someone else was playing Assamites and almost beat me to the punch (so
to speak)!

I would say that every time you need to "choose" something, it has to be
in play. For example, you can't Deflect a bleed to an ousted
Methuselah, even though the card says "choose a Methuselah" and doesn't
say that it has to be one in play.
I think that if you play the card and there are no Assamites, the card
has no effect.

When it says "choose an Assamite", you need to choose one. I.e.,
instead of saying "I choose Abd-al Rashid", you say "I choose this
Assamite, right here". This way if that Assamite leaves the game and a
different copy of that card comes into play, that (different) Abd-al
can't use the Contract. AFAIK, nothing is remembered across
incarnations of a vampire.

Yes. All effects which target, name, choose, or otherwise select a
vampire can only select controlled vampires (unless card text says
otherwise).

No, you could choose to hold it in your hand. (Perhaps I'm misunder-
standing the question.)

The same minion can be the "victim" of multiple contracts, so the other
Assamite-controlling Methuselah was not prevented from contracting the
death of the Pander merely by your Contract.

My bad, I won't try that one again. It only stands to reason, but I was
able to get away with it for that one game.

Just meant, the card is bloody useless if no one in the game is playing
Assamites, but under my misreading of the card you could squeeze out an
extra discard during your master phase (assuming you had no other
masters)

I understand all that, I was just worried the other player would bring
out the announced uncontrolled Assamite before I did. Moot point, it was
based on a misreading of the card.
Dave, if you're reading this, I apologize about burning your Pander -
but you did oust me anyway.

Bah. Basil was cannon fodder to begin with.... I hardly minded when
that was the game in which I got Amadeo to hunt for 4 pool per turn
(+1 on card, Aaron's Feeding Razor, Inbase Discotek). Never mind
ousting prey...I'm ecstatic when I can pull of an esoteric combo like
that.
I've still to modify that deck with Clan Impersonation and The Hungry
Coyote (CI Amadeo to Nosferatu Anti-tribu, and hunt for five a
turn....) Off to the collection vault, its time for some tinkering!!!
