Rachel Brandywine's ability says "If Rachel is ready, you may
place cards you discard during your discard phase in your
library (shuffle afterward)."
Do you draw a replacement card first, then shuffle the discarded
card in, or do you shuffle the discarded card in and then draw
a replacement card (possibly the same one)?
I think the latter, since it sounds kind of like the entire
"discard into the ash heap" mechanism is replaced by "discard into
the library", and since you obviously can't replace a discarded
card until it's been discarded, you'd have to shuffle first. But
it also seems possible that it's meant to be an effect triggered
by your discarding a card, which wouldn't happen until after the
discarded card hit the ash heap and had been replaced.

The latter.

I wasn't sure about the answer to this one, but I'm glad to hear it. When
I've played my Cross-Eyed Beast deck, I've felt like I was eating up a
significant chunk of time doing all her discard tricks. I'd go as fast as
I could, but I'm also neurotically obsessed with the shuffle, and this
answer means that I can discard, replace, let the other guy go, and
shuffle up while he's getting started.

No, he said "the latter". :-)

The latter = shuffle, then draw.
You can still discard, let your prey start, and shuffle/draw while
he's starting, if you don't mind not knowing what your new cards
are. Or, you can try to shuffle fast. :-)
Josh
got rachel brandywine out in a draft game yesterday, asked a

What about situations in which you have the option of discarding more than
one card during your discard phase? It seems somewhat unintuitive and time
consuming to shuffle before replacing each one, since I do have the option
of knowing my replacement card before making further discards (don't I?).

That's what I was saying. The Barrens, Dreams, Fragment, and Rachel make
for a looooong discard phase.

You can discard more than once.

I don't see what's unintuitive about it.

Yes.

I'll grant you that. As intuition is subjective, what is considered
intuitive and unintuitive will vary from person to person. From reading the
card, I believed one would discard to the ash heap as normal, and then move
those discards to the library at a later time in the discard phase, similar
to the Waste Management template.
But it can surely be considered time consuming. As I'm sure Weighted Walking
Stick was designed to prevent me from playing 60 of them in my first combat,
exhausting my library, and taking 15 minutes of game time to count out 300
or so counters.
So I am correct in stating that Rachel Brandywine's ability was designed
with the possibility that the very card you discard could be the one you
draw to replace it?

It was designed around achieving that effect, no.
But the effect of the design is that, yes.
