This could have happened in a game I was in a couple weeks ago, and I was
just wondering what would happen. And now that there's a Net Rep, there
can be an official answer...
Ignacio has an Anathema and a skill card on him, and 1 blood.
Murat (an Archon) attacks Ignacio.
Across the table, Mariel taps to end combat and do 1 damage to each vampire.
This reduces Ignacio to 1 blood. So, which of the following happens?
a) No one gains 4 pool
b) Murat's controller gains 4 pool
c) Mariel's controller gains 4 pool
Here's the relevant card text:
Mariel, Lady Thunder:
Before range is chosen, tap Mariel to end any combat that does not involve
her. This inflicts 1 damage to each participating minion and retainer.
Anathema:
Choose a ready vampire. If the vote is successful, put this card on that
vampire. If that vampire is reduced to zero blood due to combat, he or
she is burned and the Methuselah controlling the opposing minion gains
pool equal to the burned vampire's capacity.
And my thoughts:
So, I'm not sure if Anathema even applies, since combat is over. But
Mariel's ability is a combat effect, so I think it should. Then,
is the "opposing" minion Murat, or is it Mariel, since combat is
technically over by this point and Mariel is dealing the damage?
But according to the text on Mariel, she's not dealing the damage,
it is just inflicted, so there'd be no opposing minion.
Any ideas? LSJ?

Since Mariel's damage would be aggravated during a Dawn Operation
[RTR 941104], the damage is apparently dealt during combat.
So, Anathema would still apply, since the damage is done during combat.
So, the controller of the opposing minion (Murat) gains 4 pool.

I can't see an answer from LSJ so I'll have a crack at it and see how
close I get. :-)
It would seem the damage dealt to the vampire with Anathema from
Mariel's special comes results from her special and not the combat.
ie. Combat ends. One damage is inflicted to both minions.
The damage is outside of combat, like a cryptic mission.

As an aside question which should clarify this a bit more, at
least in my mind, would a dawn op on the action to burn Path of
Blood make the damage taken aggravated, or only damage dealt as
a result of combat?

Dawn Operation only kicks in in the action is blocked (card text),
and only affects damage dealt during the *resulting* combat (i.e.,
the combat resulting from the block).
It would not make the damage from a successful Path of Blood burning
(or successful Cryptic Mission) aggravated, since the action isn't
blocked.
