Preventing non-combat damage

Is it possible to prevent damage to a vampire that isn't dealt in combat? Most -- in fact all of the cards I know of that prevent damage are combat cards. The resplendant protector and the flak jacket both prevent damage in combat - Merrill's ability also applies to combat. If it isn't in fact possible to prevent damage outside of combat, then what is the point of the superior version of Reuter's Hand? -James

Damage prevention has been ruled to only be allowed during strike resolution. You may not prevent damage, even in combat, if it is not inflicted during strike resolution. This is because the rulebook describes preventing damage during strike resolution, and the RT has decided that since it is mentioned there that it can happen at no other time. (Extending the previous concept of not playing Master Out-of-Turn cards on your own turn because you were allowed to play them at other times). You absolutely cannot prevent damage from Pulled Fangs, Spawning Pool, Weather Control, Mariel's special ability, etc. because they aren't strikes. >If it isn't in fact possible to prevent damage outside of combat, then >what is the point of the superior version of Reuter's Hand? Of yeah, except in this case. Really. That's how they meant for it to be. Honest. Damage from Rutor's Hand (superior form) is to be treated as if it were dealt from a strike in combat. You may use any non-strike damage prevention method available. ----- From: aa...@cats.ucsc.edu (Thomas R Wylie) Newsgroups: rec.games.trading-cards.jyhad Subject: Re: Rutor's hand Date: 9 Dec 1995 22:10:09 GMT Message-ID: <4ad1g1$b...@darkstar.UCSC.EDU> L. So combat cards, Flak Jackets, etc. are effective. >So, we can play these combat cards outside of a combat when damage is done, >but not inside of combat except during strike resolution? Rutor's Hand allows you to prevent damage outside of strike resolution; this is not possible in general. This is because the superior versoin says the damage may be prevented. Sorry for not making that clear. >This also begs the question as to whether other, more obviously combat, >effects can now be prevented - like the 3 damage from Talbot's Chainsaw. The TC damage is not "obviously" combat at all. But no, you can't prevent it. >Also, is the text on Flak Jacket and such now "prevent 1 damage per action >or combat", or can I prevent as many '1' points of damage with it >outside of combat as I like? In general, damage preventing permanents (including Flak Jacket) are only usable during combat. Execptions will be listed on the cards. -- L.
