Can a vampire with superior Necromancy play Soul Stealing if the vampire he opposes in combat is burned by Anathema? John Baker

Soul Stealing [DS] - Action Modifier{/Combat} (nec) The normal version can only be used as an action modifier (card text). Add Superior: As above, and this card can also be played as a combat card. [RTR 960124] Yes, if they have superior Necromancy. Although, to be honest, to use it at the inferior level, I can't come up with a time when you can burn a vampire as an action other than diablerie. Soul Stealing specifies "Only usable when a vampire you control burns a vampire controlled by your prey." while Anathema says "If the vote is successful, put this card on that vampire. If that vampire is reduced to zero blood due to combat, he or she is burned". If you reduced a Vampire with Anathema on it to 0 or less, it is Anathema that is doing the actual burning, not the Vampire which is the requirement of Soul Stealing. As I was writing this, I started to think that maybe the Vampire could if s/he did enough agg damage to burn it's opponent, but then realized that the timing wouldn't be right. The Amaranth would kick in before the opposing Vamp could be burned by the excess of agg damage. a0 [ quoted text not captured ]

Anyone else? Getting into the Puzzler business, Noal? How's this: Vittorio Giovanni with a Fortitude skill card bleeds his prey. Julius (whose Sire has been Revealed) attempts to block. Vittorio plays Kiss of Ra, burning Julius. Vittorio plays Soul Stealing, gaining 1 blood (half of Julius's two capacity). Alternatively, if Julius's sire has been revealed to be a Toreador, a Nosferatu with a Necromancy skill card could play Soul Stealing on a Nosferatu Performance Art action directed at Julius. -- L. Also, I believe that the two mummies can take actions to destroy particular vampires (Followers of Set and Tremere respectively, I think) and since both can use inferior necromancy cards, they could then use Soul Stealing. I've never really played with the mummies, so I don't remember exactly. -Chris [ quoted text not captured ]

Anathema's not like Tradition Upheld, and it can be argued that it's the Anathema, and not the Necromancer that's doing the burning... but it can be argued the other way, too... Thanks for the help. Notice that Rafaele and Gaspare also have Celerity, and you can throw in Patrizia and the Assamites. Thaumaturgy also works as a cross-discipline for them quite well. In fact, I had a Obf/Cel/Nec/Qui/Tha deck of Giovanni and Assamites that meshed together surprisingly well. Alternately, Thetmes has Dominate and Potence, and can be used in other ways. Akram has Potence, Celerity, and Quietus, too. I think that that's the big secret that Patrizia has collected. It's also much easier now that we have the Changeling Skin Mask. John Baker

But a discipline card or, as you mentioned below, Changeling Skin Mask will fix that in a jiffy. I'll see if I can come up with a workable deck for this combo of disciplinces. > Thaumaturgy also works as a cross-discipline for them quite well. > In fact, I had a Obf/Cel/Nec/Qui/Tha deck of Giovanni and Assamites > that meshed together surprisingly well. A five discipline deck?!? Eep. I'd like to see that deck. Sounds like some unholy combo born of a sealed deck tournament. Kinda like the Ventrue/Nosferatu deck that I ended up with at a Michigan Draft game last year. > Alternately, Thetmes has > Dominate and Potence, and can be used in other ways. Akram has > Potence, Celerity, and Quietus, too. *nods* However, those vampires are expensive and take a while to get out...and at 8 cap and above, I like my vampires to have all of the disciplines I want at superior. > I think that that's the big secret that Patrizia has collected. I certainly have the disposable income for it. Besides, the MJL web page needs some serious redesigning. Hrm. I just wish that the company I work for didn't have a firewall and a proxy to go through. Makes telnet nearly impossible. I really should break down and buy a computer for home. > How's this: > Vittorio Giovanni with a Fortitude skill card bleeds his prey. > Julius (whose Sire has been Revealed) attempts to block. > Vittorio plays Kiss of Ra, burning Julius. > Vittorio plays Soul Stealing, gaining 1 blood (half of Julius's two capacity). > > Alternatively, if Julius's sire has been revealed to be a Toreador, a > Nosferatu with a Necromancy skill card could play Soul Stealing on > a Nosferatu Performance Art action directed at Julius. Heh. I was thinking of something a bit more practical to base a deck on, but I suppose these would work.
