Question: Silvia Giovanni (+1 Strength) is equipped with a Gas Powered Chainsaw. In the first round of combat, at close range, Silvia strikes with Gas Powered Chainsaw. How much damage is dealt by this strike? Thanks in advance. - Jason Bell

From the card, I would say 3... Card Text: Melee Weapon. 3 damage each strike. This weapon is only usable once each combat.

I have been wondering about this for a while: Gas Powered Chainsaw is a Melee weapon (as per card text). Undead strength (and pusing the limit) say: use your hand strike or MELEE WEAPON at +X strength. Since the chainsaw *is* a melee weapon, does it work with those two cards?

This weapon is only usable once each combat. Since it isn't +strength damage, the damage you will inflict is 3 as stated by the card. So it's better to have a Bang Nakh since it does strength +2 damage. /Daniel

And using the Gas Powered Chainsaw is a melee weapon strike or not? Or, more simply put, do they stack? If I play Undead Strenght with a Gas Powered Chain saw do I deal 3 or 5 damage? (assuming POT).

Izaak wrote: > And using the Gas Powered Chainsaw is a melee weapon strike or not? A Gas Powered Chain Saw is a melee weapon. Thus cards that give bonuses to melee weapon strikes give bonuses to Gas Powered Chainsaw strikes. Gas Powered Chainsaw, however, does not do damage based on strength, so inherrent strangth bonuses (like having +1 strength, or playing Torn Signpost/Fists of Death/whatever) do not increase Gas Powered Chan Saw strikes. > > Or, more simply put, do they stack? If I play Undead Strenght with a Gas > Powered Chain saw do I deal 3 or 5 damage? (assuming POT). You do 5. 'Cause Undead Strength specifically says "...or melee weapon strike at +2." Undead Strength works with Gas Powered Chain Saw 'cause it says it does. Torn Signpost does not, 'cause all it does is increase your strength, and Gas Powered Chainsaw, while a melee weapon, does not do damage based on strength. And to further confirm, all melee weapons that do damage in Jyhad card back had their text changed to strength, strength+x, or +x damage, as well as all other subsequently printed melee weapons, leaving Gas Powered Chainsaw as the sole "melee weapon" that does damage, but is not based upon strength? Thanks again for the help. - Jason Bell

Melee Weapon means nothing other than: -It is a weapon ('cause it says "weapon"), and as such, can't be used while Imoortally Grappled, for instance. -It can benefit from cards that say reference Melee Weapons. That is pretty much it. > > And to further confirm, all melee weapons that do > damage in Jyhad card back had their text changed > to strength, strength+x, or +x damage, as well as all > other subsequently printed melee weapons, leaving Gas > Powered Chainsaw as the sole "melee weapon" that does > damage, but is not based upon strength? More or less. There is the old Chainsaw card. It did 3 damage, but wasn't a melee weapon. But it also was phased out. It is possible that there are other melee weapons that do set damage, but I can't think of any. What does the current text of Kali's Fang say? [ quoted text not captured ]

In FN however, it was changed to do strength + 1, aggravated damage, instead. Halcyan 2

"Melee" is a key word on pieces of equipment that also have the key word "Weapon". Any card with this key word is a Melee Weapon and can be used with cards that require Melee Weapons. Yes, all other melee weapons deal damage based on strength (barring Rowan Ring, which doesn't do damage at all). ~SV

That wasn't a ruling. It was defunct at the time and remains so. http://groups.google.com/groups?selm=3C71C220.F80CD3CA%40white-wolf.com > And to further confirm, all melee weapons that do > damage in Jyhad card back had their text changed > to strength, strength+x, or +x damage, as well as all > other subsequently printed melee weapons, leaving Gas > Powered Chainsaw as the sole "melee weapon" that does > damage, but is not based upon strength? Correct. GPC is the last out-of-line card in that regard. It didn't use "hand damage" to mean "strength", so that particular substitution (which was not a functional change to any of the Jyhad-backed melee weapons) wasn't applied to it. Removing the "melee" designation to bring the card in line would be errata, and it doesn't rise to the errata threshold, per the same LSJ 2002 02 thread you quoted from. http://groups.google.com/groups?selm=3C71C220.F80CD3CA%40white-wolf.com [ quoted text not captured ]

"Holger Christiansen" <silve...@arcor.de> schreef in bericht news:sp2d6018gv6fbe91t...@4ax.com... [ quoted text not captured ] The big difference is that the Chainsaw is once per combat only and that Bang Nakh can be used as many times as you want during a given combat. Hence the difference in poolcost.
