Just curious, all you VTES players out there, are there any other games that you enjoy or regularly play (or does the universe rotate around your next VTES game)? Not necessarily card games either... any other games? I know I am a fan of the James Ernst/Cheapass games, especially "Kill Doctor Lucky," as well as a long time D&D player. Anyone else?

There's a new game that got demo'd at GenCon by Fantasy Flight Games called "Game of Thrones", based on the novels by George R.R. Martin. I'm a nut for the series, so when Xian told me about it I figured I'd check it out. I played a demo on Saturday afternoon and then did a sealed tourney that evening. This is the first CCG since I started playing Jyhad that's really captured my interest. I won't try to give you every nitty detail about the game, but here are a few things I like.... Plot cards. You have two decks, kind of like Jyhad, except it's a play deck, and a set of seven Plot Cards. At the beginning of the turn, each player chooses one of her seven and then they each flip it over. The plot card sets a base value of gold you get that turn to move things into play, *initiative scores*, and basically how much "oommph" each of your attacks will have; the default is one, but a few plot cards can set that to two. Two is huge, but you usually pay for it with crappy initiative and gold. Attacks. There are three kinds of attacks in the game: Military, intrigue, and power. The point of the game is to accumulate fifteen power. A successfull power attack will move one of your oppononent's power to your pool. A successful military attack forces your opponent to choose one of their characters and off it. I successful intrigue attack forces them to discard a card at random from their hand. You only draw two cards at the beginning of the turn, so stripping cards can matter. Not all minions are rated for all types of attacks. If you don't have any minions with that rating, you don't block. Setup. A the beginning of the game you get to pick up to five gold's worth of characters and locations from your hand and put them into play. Everybody starts out at about the same level i.e. no nuking someone's game before it gets started.... well, you can do that, but not by just shovelling more shit out there than they can. Marshelling/Attack phase split. All I mean by this is that the player with the higher initiative decides who goes first. That player then spends his gold and basically lays down locations, equipment, and characters. Then the other guy does the same. *Then* the guy who goes first declares his attacks, then the other player does. It just makes a nice balance, and gives you a shot at having defense even if you got obliterated last turn. Balance. That last bit is one example, but the game seems very well balanced in lots of little ways, such that you can seem to be absolutely corn-holed by the Lord on one turn and quickly turn it around the next. The game posesses a nice equilibrium. Anyway, I'd been meaning to tip off some of you guys to the presence of this great game, and this seemed like a good chance. Sorry for the off-topic post, and thanks, Xian, for hooking me up. David Cherryholmes Prince of Durham, NC

Not necessarily card games either... any > other games? L5R. Next to VTES, L5R is the coolest game I know of. Imagine having the finals of a VTES tournament actually effecting the next edition of the Vampire RPG. Or if a Ravnos w/Presence deck wins, a Ravnos with PRE comes out in the next set. Or if the final at Gencon came down to a Malkavian vs a Ventrue, and the Ventrue Hostiles one of the Makavians and wins. Then next set that Malk gets a new version as a Ventrue that contests the old one. How cool would THAT be? That's what happens every week in L5R. It's really very cool, and the Baltimore Storyline tourny and its resulting card are good steps in that direction.

I'm of course, an avid RPGer with a rather large collection of Vampire books. I also play DandD and Shadowrun (my personal favorite next to Vampire). Hopefully I will be playing in a Farscape (yes, the d20 game!!) soon. Aside from all the table top RPGs there is also the computer games, Morrowind and Neverwinter Nights are on the top of the list right now.... ...and I wonder why my wife complains about not spending time with me.... ;)

[ quoted text not captured ] I still play Magic occasionally, although I dropped virtually my entire collection earlier this year down to 16 decks. Play approx 2-3 times a month. I started playing Lord of the Rings CCG, a very good enjoyable game except that unless you are lucky, the Rares overpower the game. (Still not a problem I have found in VTES). I brought a small amount, and left it at that, having built 3 decks. I play Munchkin, Chess, Solitare, Monopoly (Star Wars Edition), Mancala (a game originating from the east using beads and cups, very easy to learn, harder than chess to master), Tomb Raider II, and lots of different RPGs. My time is pretty much dominated by VTES (still my fave game after 8 years) but it is good to have other interests. My fiancee will also play Monopoly and Mancala (and even Chess occasionally). Back in them days individual GMs essentially had to reconstruct the game for themselves, which we did, and still do. DnD eclectic lite orchestra, if you will. Roleplaying Skirmish games loosely based on Necromunda. Warhammer Fantasy Battle. Vinci Medina Weird german Tower-building game with wooden blocks History of the World Napoleon in Europe Master Labyrinth Talisman [2nd edition, and yes we have ALL the expensive expansions, and no you CAN'T buy them even though we never actually play with most of them] The Hills Rise Wild The Works/XXXenophile Magic [social, theme decks, we lost the magic Plot somewhere around WeatherLight] Warhammer Ancient Battles, increasingly a favourite Battlefleet Gothic Crimson Skies Home-made RPGs based on other systems, eg StocsLite and Phoenix Home-made tactical and strategic wargames, eg Tank Thing and War Thing Other games we like and probably should play more: Flintloque Rage Arcadia, especially KIHM Pokemon Centurion HArpoon Battletech - the minis game, though i have to admit [sorry, Matt] that we HAVE played the card-game quite a bit, to set up scenarios for minis games.

Well, since you ask: Card games: My "number 2" choice is Shadowfist, but to be honest I haven't even looked at it in the last year. A truely great game with some lovely humour in. I also love Munchkin (I got my Munchkin 2 signed by John Kovalic at a con, and apparently I was the first to ask him!) and Chez Geek. Jophn Kovlaic is a god. I have dabbled in some others (Harry Potter is OK but SO limited, I played Magic once - didn't like it much (coz I lost)), but VTES is the daddy. Also, as a result of a holiday in spain with the in laws, Bridge has been tickling my fancy lately. And some other card games using an old fasion deck. Board games: Journeyman's Zombies is good. Settlers of Catan is great (much more family orientated - to be honest, by in laws are hooked as a resutl of my introduction to it!). Scrabble (!) is also a favourite lately. Finally, the shock of the month, Risk has been making a huge comeback around my circle lately - play it with cognac and cigars... great fun! Roleplay: We've got 4 V:TM campaigns on the go at the moment: 2 Cammie, 2 Sabbat. We also have a Mage campaign on the go too (I play a grizzeled country and western singer (Choirester), who in a previous incarnation devised American Pie as a prophecey of the Appocolypse and delivered it to Don Maclean in a dream). In the last year we have played Feng Shui, Marvel Superheroes, Hunter, and a trad. fantasy game using the old Palladium system. I'm also in a Band, doncherknow. I keep slipping VTES references into the songs I write and I'm delighted that no-one really gets them. Huzzah! I have demos that I'm happy to pass around too... *ahem* ;) > I know I am a fan of the James Ernst/Cheapass games, especially "Kill > Doctor Lucky," as well as a long time D&D player. It really bugs me that everyone treats it like a big joke. I mean, if all you got was the first book I could understand it, but if you buy the second, it comes with a little insert. Up until that point, the universe seemed random and capricious. You're a plantation owner that is trying to exploit the riches of Puerto Rico better than your opponents. I like this game because there are so many different strategies that work to win the game. The other recent game that is highly enjoyable is Pizarro where you are rulers in Europe trying to get the most prestige by sponsering various explorers expeditions. This is an auction game. The two sets of "specials" for the explorers allows for some customization and really increases the replayability of the game. Older games that I really like: 18xx games - very complex and not for some people. These are the line of train games. These games are equally about stock market manipulation as running trains. Stephenson's Rocket - I've heard this described as Reiner Knizia does 18xx. The rules are very simple and the pettiness/spitefulness factor of this game is immense :) (a good thing in my book) Vinci - Civilization lite! Take a group of migrants that have two random special powers and conquer Europe. Discard after a few turns and start another group. Collect as many victory points as possible. Lord of the Rings - Best co-op game I've ever played. Watching Sauron charge down the adventure path towards your hobbits is great fun! Other good games - Acquire, Euphrates & Tigris, Die Macher, El Grande, Tikal, Union Pacific, Civilization, Age of Renaisance, Ra, Aladins Dragons, and many more that I've forgotten Jeff

I started a 'quick' > game with my brother two months ago and we still haven't finished. If you play a lot, the game goes really quickly. We regularly play 4 player games that take, like, 3 or 4 hours. Mustering and moving is easy if you know what you are doing, and everyone knows when to run away. Granted, we also occasionally play games that take, like, a billion years, but sshorter ones are more common. > It seems like a really well thought out and all inclusive campaign > environment, but the one time I tried it, our GM didn't seem to have a > real grasp on the rules or running a game. (Heroclix) It's fun. I wouldn't put a great deal of effort into playing real seriously (i.e. I don't), but it is certainly entertaining, and has funny little superhero guys :-) > (Well, except that I've only played Diplomacy once - the guy who was > teaching me sold me out on the third turn or something, so I gave my > pieces to his biggest enemy and wrote that game off - and you don't > list Champions or Mythos as favorites.) I'm not a big role-player. I find the time investement : entertainment value ratio of roleplaying to be not as good as I'd like it. > Lord of the Rings - Best co-op game I've ever played. Watching Sauron > charge down the adventure path towards your hobbits is great fun! > You should play the old "War of the Ring" game - with the addition of the third Saruman character. That game has lead to two of my favorie 'war stories' to regale my friends with. 1. I was playing Sauron. Frodo sneaks to the crack of doom and has to sit there for a turn to destroy the ring. I teleport my remaining 5 ringwraiths to mount doom to destroy the little git (don't ask what happened to the other four - its actually not that hard in the game to squish ringwraiths). My first ringwraith looms over frodo who throws back his cloak and is carrying EVERY MAGICAL ITEM EVER MENTIONED IN THE BOOKS! - Narsil, sting, Mithril Armor, Galadrials Light, Narya etc. Before I could blink Frodo had KILLED two ringwraiths in hand to hand!!! I realized I could only kill him with the ringwraiths puny magic. End result, My last ringwraith, with one wound left, standing on the bodies of his fellows finally kills the little annoying hairyfooted B!stard! Not quite the end Tolkien had in mind! 2. Almost my greatest feat in boardgames. I was playing Saruman in the three player variant. Its important to realize it is essentially almost impossible for Saruman to win the game - Hell it even says so in the Manual!!!! However I was performing the impossible. After squishing helms deep Saruman caught Aragorn (who was bearing the ring) and squished his punk ass. I had the RING! I quickly hid in Helms Deep behind a wall of Uruk-Hai. To win the game I had to hold on to the ring for a number of turns equal to the remaining Nazghul. Each turn a Nazghul would join my side. The road to Helms Deep is lined with Fellowship Armies, but they are far too weak to take it. My jaw dropped and I completely lost it when the Fellowship player jumped all his units off the road so a MASSIVE army of Saurons orcs could wander up to Helms Deep, kill me, take the ring and win the game - "But Gandalf would never have done that!!!!" "Who cares, I just didn't want you to win" queue brutal dice attack!

I also like Bridge, Heroclix is great (especially 3 or more players), PS2 is cool but doesn't count I suppose (Medal of Honour), Risk, The beans game I played with my French Friends in Paris and any drinking game. BUT, my ALL TIME FAVORITE GAME must be 'Hide the Salami'. I thank you.

Computer-wise, I have just (foolishly) bought a PS2 (there goes my life) and have been wandering through GTA3 - the BEST GAME I HAVE EVER PLAYED (this week). Seriously, it is so wonderfully open, everyone should own it. SSX tricky is also ace (Lucy Liu does the voice of one of the characters, and her sultry voice always makes me feel like Gym class at school when we climbed ropes...). James Bond, agent under fire, isn't. File under "Pile of Pants". VFighter4 and VRally3 I haven't even opened yet, due to GTA3. Get it. Now. > And I can recommend Gother than thou by Savant Gaude games as very enjoyable. D'you know, I have that (bought on a tip from Tom Kassel of old). I have only opened it and looked at it, but never played it! Mind you , some of the cards are hilarious (Genital Piercings, Visit from Mum, Gullible Roommate) and the art is superb throughout. DH

Well, I don't really have that much time to play many games, Jyhad is my main gaming vice. I am a musician and I am usually rehearsing, playing gigs and/or touring. And since everyone around me is drunk and partying there are only a few games we ever get into. A version of Uno with regular cards that we call Last Card (pretty original, huh?) and use as a drinking game (surprise, surprise). My drummer and I like to get people to play another card game that uses a fixed board and is entitled Sequence which is pretty fun, until the board starts looking fuzzy ( which is easy to do even when you're sober since the board has little pictures of every card on it ). But what we play the most is Ping Pong! A lot of our rehearsals find us coming out of the studio with our glasses of Absolut & Soda and then start smashing the little dirty white ball around (we're actually quite good, though I am not sure why we can play this game drunk, but as I think about it we are usually drunk onstage and this is pretty difficult music that we play). There you have it, and yes I am the only one in the group that plays any kind of "gamer" games (everyone else kinda just laughs at me, which is why I used to hide my gaming tendancies earlier on, but I don't give a fuck anymore). I'm sure it would be something more like J: *Sound of cell-phone opening as her thumb moves toward new boyfriend's speed dial...*

[ quoted text not captured ] I probably wouldn't have quite the same problem as long as a few of points could be managed 1) Lindsay could come over with me. 2) I paid. 3) My credit card could get spent in multiple shops whilst I was in a darkened venue playing cards. 4) We had a very nice hotel room. However, with the current plan of all savings going towards wedding and deposit on a house, that isn't going to happen too soon. I was lucky in that work sent me to the US in July and I got to spend a couple of evenings playing VTES with Josh and the guys in St. Louis (Hi There!), but as that was work related (and they paid) it was OK. Playing games as the sole reason would be different. (I got a reprieve for GenCon UK as Lins is writing up her Thesis, and has no time to do anything else!) May the night be yours. I'm glad someone mentioned Feng Shui, it's still my favorite rpg. Its that rpg based on Shadowfist, although as I understand it the rpg was planned from the start. Imagine, a Cybernetic Demon going up a against an Acient Kung Fu master, in Honk Action movie style! Rather than provide another exhaustive list of the games I play I'll list my favorites. Board Games: Bloodbowl and Diplomacy RPG: Feng Shui, Vampire, and I am enjoying D&D's current incarnation. Favorite capaign was in 1st edition runequest though. Computer Games: Playing Warcraft 3 now and loving it. I still go back to my favorite custom maps of Starcraft though. Heck, it's got real time versions of some of my favorite board games, like risk and diplomacy. Classic Card Game: Spades Sport: Soccer Wisefool Mercuriel
