After the Final Nights expansion and the announcement of the Camarilla
edition, I realize how White Wolf has the real will to approximate
VTES to new players. Because of this, I think it would be the perfect
time to include in that expansion (basic set indeed), the promotional
vampires Mariana Gilbert and Dan Murdock. Even many old players hadn't
got any chance to get them, at least at a reasonable cost. If I
remember rightly this vampires were absolutely free in Wizards' times,
so why not include them in this only occasion?. I think it's time to
end with nasty speculation. What's your honest opinion, LSJ?
Oh, and, of course, if any of you, VTES players, agree with me,
please let me know. Sorry about my bad English.
Best,

Truth be told, I don't really mind the status quo. I never got any Marianas or
Dans when they were offered free (through WotC and various people). But I have
managed to acquire 4 Marianas and a Dan through trading, etc. No offense to
anyone in particular, but I get a bit annoyed by people whining about how they
didn't have the opportunity to get this or the opportunity to get that. There
are still many ways to get copies of those cards if you're willing to work for
it (and trade for it). I wasn't playing around the time of Sabbat, and you
don't hear me complaning about how I have no Shadow Step or Derange. And if I
do want any, then I'll go trade for some. Simple as that!
In any case, as you can tell, I don't really agree with including Mariana and
Dan in the base set. But if they were, I'd rather have them as rares or
something (as opposed to fixed in the starters, etc.).

That's our policy for non-promo-only cards, yes.
The policy for promo-only cards is dictated by the definition of "promo-only".

I agree with you Halcyan, but I think that if they reprint those promos they
should be printed as promo-only once again and given out to princes to in
turn give them out on tournaments to draw people to them, just like the new
promo-only vampire for BL and just like it was iwth Dan and Mariana when
they were printed as well.

Actually, I think LSJ said:
""The Bloodlines expansion, scheduled for release on December 03, 2001,
contains 196 all-new cards (no reprints). That number includes 63 commons, 63
uncommons, and 70 rares. It also includes the promo card, The Baron (a Samedi
vampire card) that is also included in the booster pack assortment (it is not a
promo-only card). "
* Note, they state the promo card is not a promo-only card.

Good idea too. Reprint them as promo-only and distribute them to
Princes for tournaments. Remarks?

Well this is true but there will be another vampire that is promo-only.
Steve Wieck posted to the Conclave a while back ago saying:
The Baron Samedi will be making an appearance in several CCG magazines
around the world. He is a promo vampire, and will also appear in the
Bloodlines set. There will be no difference between his promo version and
his set version.
Another promo-only card which I will not yet reveal is also being prepared.
This card will be used to draw people to organized play as it will only be
available, while supplies last, by attending a sanctioned or pre-release
V:TES tournament. These will probably NOT be ready in time to have at
Bloodlines pre-release events. More information later.
We will also be releasing the card list to Bloodlines to magazines prior to
the set's release and at release on our website as well.

Steve
So there you go.

Though, in general, assuming a promo-only card doesn't have wild
implications and a radical new player, they'd generally be better off as
vampires, IMO.
Library cards you might need lots and lots and lots of for a deck that
planned on utilising them. It's rare to see many "standard" vampires
that you'd want more than 3 or 4 of.
e.g creating a nice bread-and-butter vampire like Mariana would be good,
whereas creating a brand new killer vampire with l33t special skills
would be bad.

Yes which is what I am thinking too. But knowing how this forum works I

But, you might still want 3 or 4 of them. Mariana, for instance, is highly
useful to several decks.
Much better, IMO, would be a master, each player may only play once per game,
that did something somewhat odd that wouldn't fit into most decks.
Of course, after going through several crusades against stupid promos in other
games, there's only one good type of promo that comes to mind - alternate
versions of existing cards, whether just alternate artwork or foils. Much,
much rather have alternate versions of Blood Doll, Minion Tap, Sudden Reversal,
etc.
To forestall an argument that people wouldn't care about these, Magic promo
versions of staple cards have been highly desirable.
>e.g creating a nice bread-and-butter vampire like Mariana would be good,

Creating anything different is bad. It will always produce a fairness issue.
What amazes me is that companies don't take all of the good ideas from each
other and ignore the bad.
I got my Dan Murdock and my Mariana Gilbert directly from the company;
for a while there, if you sent them a SASE, they'd send you the cards.
I really hope Whitewolf extends this policy to the new promo-only
card.

Just a reminder folks;
V:TES is a CCG. Collectible Card Game..
Before WotC started handing out Marianna and Dan Murdock
at tourneys, you had to buy one of their Vampire novels which
had a mail-in coupon to obtain these cards.
Personally, I thought the novel-card tie-in was a pretty good
idea (as long as the novel doesn't suck hard).
So rather than gripe about not having free access to "x" card,
talk to people and trade for them. The greatest attribute to
V:TES (IMHO) is that the game requires a certain amount of
sociablility on behalf of the players in order to effectively
compete. The same cannot be said of most CCG's which
play 1 on 1.

I'm not sure I agree. This sounds like the kind of thing I was talking
about WRT "staple vampires" vs. "specialized vampires": basically, most
vampires can be considered staples and therefore not suitable for being
rare, hard-to-get cards. I'm kind of leery about promo-only cards. It
seems to me that no matter how hard they try, there's always some
significant class of avid players somewhere that will pay hell trying to
get hold of the promo vampires. If you put it in magazines, any given
magazine won't get distributed to large parts of the world. If you offer
them in tournaments, many localities just will not be within reasonable
driving distance of any tournament. (Say, if you live somewhere in North
Dakota and there's no prince within 200 or 300 miles.) A lot of people
aren't plugged into the net very well and may never hear about any
opportunities.
I'm not saying promo-only cards are a bad idea. I'm just saying you
should make damn sure they're not the kind of staple cards that make
lots of decks better. I think Marianna Gilbert was a pretty bad choice
for a promo-only card. She's a 4-cap with superior presence which is
great for any deck based largely or totally on library cards requiring
presence. I think it's not always real clear how important something
like that is because you don't ever perceive her as winning the game or
doing anything highly dramatic for you. But the advantages of having
another small, efficient minion that does exactly what you need done
and/or having a different vampire in your crypt so you don't have to
double up on an existing vamp (say Violette Prentis in the case of MG)
can be big. It just usually doesn't strike you at the moment you had
an opening crypt draw with both VP and MG that you might have had deal
with delaying a turn and drawing for another vampire, or that you might
otherwise have had to invest in a larger cap vampire to get the same
bang had you not drawn MG. But it makes a significant difference.
Obviously, no promo card should ever be any kind of strong, must-have kind
of card. But depending on what you meant by "a brand new killer vampire
with l33t special skills", I think I might tend to opt for that as a
better choice for promo-only than another Marianna Gilbert.

Realistically, that's often not an option for people. If no one
else in your area has one, you can talk and trade all you want
and you still won't be getting one.

HA! I strongly disagree with that. As I barely ever trade, my
local opponents have, on multiple occasions, commented about my
decks: "Isn't that a rare card you're playing over and over?"
There are other ways to do it (be online and spend a bunch of
time tracking things down, mostly). Which is good. I don't
care beans about being sociable and trading. I just want to
play the game in its full glory. I'm not antisocial, mind you.
I just strongly disagree with anyone advancing the notion of
trading as a required skill to play a CCG.

At every tourney I've attended in the US, I've always been able
to meet people that were up for some trading. In some cases we
did trading via e-mail/mail afterwards.
I'm of the opinion that V:TES players have had access to
inexpensive cards (from WotC overprinting) that we're inherently
spoiled. So when someone whines that they cannot get "x"
card, chances are they haven't tried talking to people for trade
or made an honest effort to locate players outside of their
playgroup.

And you don't have to bother trading with people if you simply
pony up the money for boxes of cards. In my original post, I never
implied that trading is a required skill to play a CCG.
CCG's by definition are supposed to encourage trading, much
like any other collectible hobby.
What I said was that social skills take a greater role in V:TES
over other CCG's as each player needs to interact with multiple
people rather than just one opponent.

I definately hope this won't be the case again in the future. It's highly
unfair to all non-americans who doesn't have access to as SASE. I've enver
even heard about it here maybe it's possible to get but probably not

Perhaps. But that doesn't help folks who feel "trading challenged";
who never feel tremendously happy with the trades we make or for the
most part simply don't have anything we want to give up to get
something. Trading isn't for everybody - so should not be considered
mandatory to get a card.
Nor did you address my point people living in a place where no one
owns the card. Show up to trade and it will do you no good.

I guess that's my point. I don't consider those to be activities
to be something people should be required to engage in to play.
Of course, things like out of print expansions are what they are.
You have to find some way to cope and though it's OK in my book to
ask a company to reprint (along with enthusiastically indicating
your willingness to buy said reprinted product), you have to deal
with the fact that they might not. And find some other way to cope,
whether it be trading, hunting down singles on line, or calling some
place like Potomac and paying their price to get boxes of the stuff -
if you can. But let's not put out cards that deliberately have a
very narrow means of distribution just to _force_ people to trade.

You actually sort of did. Or it sounded like it to me. If you
were just talking about the suggestion to reprint Marianna (if so,
it might help if you quote text to indicate a direct response to
what someone else is saying), then there's actually multiple means
of getting copies of her, not just trading.

Maybe.
According to the main VTES page on www.white-wolf.com,
"Vampire: The Eternal Struggle(TM) is a trading card game [...]"
Most recent press material and supplementary texts (such as the
on-line rulebook, etc) call V:TES a TCG, not a CCG. This is quite a
major semantical point, not just a nit-pick.
However, the Bloodlines preview page states that "Bloodlines is the
third expansion from White Wolf for Vampire: The Eternal Struggle, the
collectible card game [...]", thus calling it a CCG.
IIRC, recent boxes/packs of V:TES cards have called it a TCG as well;
it's difficult to call something collectible if cards get continuously
reprinted, i.e. their value will fluctuate a lot. With 'normal'
collectibles, the value is not modified by reprints, merely by rarity
and demand - e.g. baseball cards or coins. You simply won't see
another Sandy Koufax baseball card reprinted, or another 'original'
Silver Dollar: they're collectibles.
Of course, this has been debated to death before, and a lot of it can
be traced back to semantic issues.

It's highly unlikely Succubus will ever be reprinted. Or Derange, for
that matter. I wouldn't be surprised if, during the reprint of the
base set, that certain cards are "retired" to make way for new ones --
were I able to put money on such things, I'd wager that Tempration of
the Greater Power and Succubus Club would be on that list, among
others.
Apportations selling for how much on E-bay? And the Carrion Coffin?
Tell me we're not looking at a CCG here after looking at how absurd
card prices have gotten there.

Why would you think this? Retiring cards is not a good means of reigning

I live in the USA. I have made trades for cards to people in France,
Sweden and several in Canada, simply to help complete collections.
I understand your lack of trading skills. I have a similar problem, but
when you *know* a card is unavailable due to scarcity in the local area,
you have to take measures to get what you seek.
Basically if you don't want the card, you don't have it. Thus in this
case you obviously don't want the promo cards. They widely available,
so if you don't have one it no one fault but your own.

I don't agree with that, either. It sounds as if you're talking about
people trading with other people in other cities they've never met and
know nothing of. That doesn't sound like a very good idea to me, either.
I might trade with folks on the newsgroup that I've seen posting for

You mean if a given person doesn't care to trade, he obviously doesn't want
the promo cards. I strongly disagree. You vastly overstate the possibility
and desirability of the various trading scenarios.

I did? Perhaps you never bothered to ask me.
Anyhow you have Ebay, Communal Haven, the newgroup, the Vtes mailing

you could.

True ebay is not, but the newsgroups has not limited trading and does
encourage it.
Now what do you consider undue risk. That seem to be the crux of the

Not _this_ newsgroup, if that's what you mean. No one really enforces it I notice
but technically, the newsgroup charter for this newsgroup does not permit sales or
trades. In theory, all Jyhad sales and trade post are supposed to go to
rec.games.trading-cards.marketplace.misc.

I have already posted that. Basically trading sight unseen with people I've never
met.
On one level, you're quite correct. Anyone who doesn't have a given card has not
tried hard enough to obtain one. Any card. They can all be had if someone wants one
enough. And by the same token, you could be President of France if you wanted badly
enough, too. It's all just a matter of effort.

Eeeh where would I get stamps in USD/US cents to stamp it with?? The local
post office doesn't have any for sure. Also I'd need ot figure out the
shipping cost from US to Sweden as well evne IF I could get the steamps
(which I can't).

This is why international reply coupons were invented.

Will a .jpg suffice?

Please your hurting me. Any country besides France!
Well maybe not Afghanistan, but any other country.
Your too paranoid. What are you a Methusalah?
Perhaps we can start a trading-cards.jyhad.marketplace.

Yes however it is considerably easier to obtain a particular card than
it is to become President of France.
Maybe you should check out the Succubus Club. Hundreds (possibly even
thousands) have been trading jyhad cards there for almost two years.
I've been trading there since the beginning with people from all over
the world and i haven't been burnt once (some have but it's rare).
