An icon for FELDB?

I've started using Fragment of the Elder Library Database (running it under Wine in Linux), and one thing bothers me: it has no icon to be used in menus or the desktop. I've been using this, since it came with the operating system: http://linuxmednews.com/TopicImages/gnome-aorta.png ...but I'm sure you guys can give me some great suggestions for good looking and/or hilarious icons I could use...? (Q: "What anti-virus software should I use for my PC?" A: "Linux." or "Buy a Mac.") But I'll bite, since I've never used ARDB. Someone recommended FELDB for me, nobody else I know recommended anything else. So why should I use ARDB instead of FELDB? HG

In ARDB, the "Remove..." button often works well for that sort of thing. e.g. "Select...", tick Retainer. "Remove...", Other text: bleed. You've got all the Retainers who don't have bleed in their card text. So no J.S. Simmons, Tasha, or Robert. [ quoted text not captured ]

The second issue I could probably live with, but the first one is a deal breaker, sorry. HG

This is not true :) In the new version, FELDB use the card text from the offical site. regards, Bala

[ quoted text not captured ] And yet it is still bug and typo laden. For instance: Abjure requires a 'Redemeer'; 'pool' and 'Pool' are sorted separately, as are 'blood' and 'Blood'; many anarch cards require anarchAnimalism/ Celerity/Obtenebration or similar; Luna Giovanni has '1vote' and thus doesn't show up when filtering for '1 vote' titled; Joseph Cambridge has no title despite being a bishop; Evan Rogers has 'celqui'; Enkidu is listed as having PRE instead of PRO... These are just a few database errors at random - I find them all the time. Then there are truckloads of functional errors, especially having to do with the deck & inventory count systems which persistently show incorrect counts for cards in decks, and the silly deck manager swaps the Info for decks around randomly between your managed decks. Plus there's always the extra lines inserted into the Info on saving and/or opening, causing files to get bigger as you use them. I use FELDB, but I often wish I didn't. It's still not ready for prime time. Alex

The author doesn't seem to be very much interested in responding to complaints. The annoyance is that for all the work he's put in creating the thing in the first place - and it would be a very good thing were it not for this - it wouldn't take much more effort to keep an ear out for user reports of problems and fix them. It's not like the stuff that's wrong would be very hard to fix. *sigh* Has anyone seen any FELDB data files for Twilight Rebellion? Fred

[ quoted text not captured ] Do you process the card names in some way? "The Bitter and Sweet Story" is listed as "The Bitter and Sweet Story" and not "Bitter and Sweet Story, The" in the official card texts. This is why Janne is having import problems. Graham.

This seems to be an issue with how Feldb and Ardb handle the card texts differently. Ardb takes them straight from White Wolfs card texts while Feldb was once updated by hand but now uses White Wolfs card texts. I will add the import issue to my todo list and try and get a fix for it in the next version of Ardb. Graham.

Janne Hägglund

Graham Smith <graham....@gmail.com> writes: [ quoted text not captured ] Ah, I see. It's also White Wolf's official card list that's wonky. It sorts "The Admonitions" correctly to "A" but "The Bitter and Sweet Story" incorrectly to "T". (By the way, you'll probably want to sort names starting with "The" correctly anyway, so it woudn't matter anymore if White Wolf gives you "The Admonitions" or "Admonitions, The".) HG

Wow. One of my irritations with FELDB is exactly having to run off and find card names beginning with "The" somewhere else _besides_ under T. Fred

The error is that The Bitter and Sweet Story sorts under "The", not that the others do not. The Bitter and Sweet Story will be sorted correctly in the next update of the card text database.

While it seems like most people prefer ARDB, there are several advantages that FELDB has which ARDB doesn't possess: - FELDB data includes some additional data fields that ARDB doesn't. In particular, it includes ARTIST information for each of the cards. (And yes, some of us do actually care about that!) - More importantly, the main reason why I personally have always preferred FELDB is that it is vastly superior in terms of Inventory Management. Using ARDB to input your inventory can be rather cumbersome (depending on how you sort your cards). FELDB allows you to quickly choose cards based on Clan, Discipline, Card Type, Set, Rarity, etc. The built-in tabs (which you just need to click) makes things A LOT easier in FELDB. So I think both ARDB and FELDB add significant value, but depending on what you need it for, one may sometimes be more useful than the other.

Agreed. I used to use ARDB back in the days, and was pretty happy with it. Then I wanted to do my inventory, and had to go for FELDB to do it properly. So I used ARDB and FELDB parallelly for a while, using FELDB for the inventory and ARDB for the deck-building, but the new features in FELDB (linking inventory and decks, etc.) made me drop ARDB completely. I was constantly nagging Bala (the FELDB dev) to incorporate some of the better ARDB features that I was missing from FELDB, and I think he did put there a lot, though not all (e.g. the negative filtering of ARDB is really-really cool as part of a multi-filter filtering). -- Regards, Daneel
