Hello, I would like to know if there is some determined order to play "before combat" cards. I think it is like MAGIC:TG but I am not sure, supose this case: Ulug Beg bleeds (and the controller has Thoughts Betrayed in his hand) Emerson Bridges blocks (and the controller has Thoughts Betrayed too) Questions: If Ulug plays TB, could Emerson play TB too in response? Supose now Ulug is blocked but he was not going to play TB (he thinks that stupid Ventrue cannot damage him hee hee) so when Emerson blocks, Emerson plays TB (he just drew Zip Gun/Dragon Breath's rounds hee hee), could Ulug play TB in response to Emerson's card (using that he is the acting minion)? What about if Emerson plays TB and Ulug wants to answer it with Change of Target? Generally speaking: Who is firs in playing pre-combat cards? and can one player answer to an opponent TB with other pre-combat card? What about Ulug saying TB and Arika answering with Obedience? I think It is not a Say-It-First competition, is it? Thanks anyway Jon. Jorge (Spain).

Ulugh could say that he wanted to play TB but Emmerson has played it too fast and so should return the card to his hand (if that was the case). If Ulugh had time to think and declined to play "before combat cards" by, say, a few seconds of silence, then Emmerson could play his. > What about if Emerson plays TB and Ulug wants to answer it with Change of > Target? CoT is an action modifier, not a combat card. Again the "seconds of silence" are fundamental here. Either that or Emmerson asks "Did I block?" (wich is the best thing to do in any situation). > Generally speaking: Who is firs in playing pre-combat cards? and can > one player answer to an opponent TB with other pre-combat card? First goes the actonig minion, then the blocker. > What about Ulug saying TB and Arika answering with Obedience? > Again the "Did I block?" question is fundamental. If the answer is "yes" then Arika may play her Obedience (it's a reaction card that kicks in before combat is ever considered). If not then someone should ask "are we in combat?" and then you have fun. > I think It is not a Say-It-First competition, is it? > No, thank Garfield... David Pontes (Portugal) 8[

Not positive about this but I believe it has been answered already. The acting minion always plays first, whether it be maneuvers, strikes, or before combat cards. There is no opportunity to "respond" to thoughts Betrayed as it states opposing minion cannot play any further cards. Rulemongers step in please,:) Karl

But, "a few seconds of silence" isn't a very precise measure of intent. And it certainly shouldn't be used in a tournament situation. 'Round here, we call out every step, indicating our desire to begin a new step (and our intention not to play cards): A: "I act" B: "I attempt to block" A: (indicating no stealth/post-block effects) "I'm blocked" B: (indicating no post-block effects) "Uh-huh" A: "Going to combat" (indicating no TB) B: "uh-huh" (same) A: "Going to choose range" (indicating no pre-range cards) B: "uh-huh" (indicating same) A: "Happy with close range" (no maneuvers) B: "uh-huh" and so on. Tedious at first, but saves a lot of arguing, and moves pretty quickly once you get used to it. >On 29 Nov 1996, CAPABLANCA wrote: >> If Ulug plays TB, could Emerson play TB too in response?
