Using Objects : optional ? (LSJ)

A player thinks that using objects, including the ones that grant a bonus to bleed or strength to a minion, is optional. I say nay, but have to be sure. So, can a Laptop equipped minion chose to bleed for 1, someone with Brass Knucles choose to strike for 1 ? Orpheus

No, usually items and retainers are not optional, much like some abilities (e.g. Kite's +1 built-in intercept) are not.
