I think I understand how 'end combat' works, but would like a bit of reassurance. If played, an 'end combat' card ends that ROUND (phase, whatever), not stopping combat between the two vampires, yes? -j

If I play a 'End Combat' while blocking, say, a bleed, what's the outcome of the bleed? What if the attacker plays the E-C card? -j

In article <4skdqh$s...@blackice.winternet.com>, [ quoted text not captured ] What do you mean, outcome of the combat? It ends. There is no 'outcome.' If combat ensued due to a blocked action, the action is still blocked (barring specials like Form of Mist); if combat ensued due to an action like Bum's Rush or Haven Uncovered, the action concluded when the combat started (I think; LSJ, what's the skinny on Form of Misting a Bum's Rush- induced combat? Nothing, I'd say, but you never know *what's* in the water cooler at Wizards). Maybe an example will help you: Astrid, Eeevil Tremeeere, bleeds with Govern the Underlined (+2 bleed). You block with Gideon "Mr. Alternative Lifestyle" Fontaine. Astrid, the Eeevil Tremere, whips some Theft of Vitae, or Blood Fury, or what have you, out and lays it on Mr. AL. Not relevant, because Gideon unleashes his enormous...ah, charms, and uses Majesty. Combat ends, before whatever nasty thing was going to happen actually happens. That's it. You now have two tapped guys and a done combat, and Mr. Tremere continues with his turn. hope that helped, gomi -- 'spend a day and a half dead and the lettuce runs amok.' -babs woods

Then what's the outcome of the combat? If I play a 'End : Combat' while blocking, say, a bleed, what's the outcome of the bleed? : What if the attacker plays the E-C card? When an action is blocked and combat begins, that's it for the action. It never happens. What then happens in combat is irrelevant as far as the action is concerned (unless you play a card that says otherwise, of course. Form of Mist is cool). If I'm bleeding you, you block with a minion with Presence, and in the ensuing combat play Majesty on the first round, that's it. I haven't bled you (you blocked), and neither of our minions hurt each other. I may have wasted some combat cards (because I had to declare my strike first), but aside from that the only outcome is that our two minions are now tapped (if you have superior Presence, you can burn a blood to untap). That's it. Ditto if the attacker plays it, except that the blocker won't waste strike cards, since the attacker has to lay down his Majesty first. (he too has the untap option if he has superior Presence). Strike: Combat Ends is *very* frustrating for combat decks. Sitting there with Death Of A Vampire in your hand and seeing that Ventrue political deck block you and slap down his *fourth* Majesty can get kinda old... Chris Mattern

DOUGDWISE

Faethor, If you block a bleed then that bleed (or any action) then that action fails. What happens during the ensuing combat won't make any difference and so if either of you were to play a Combat Ends effect the action would end. The obvious exception to this is the Superior version of Form of Mist (S:CE. May continue the action at +1 stealth as if unblocked. Action may still be blocked. or something like that) Doug Dunaway (An Artistically Inept Torreador)

For the combat to even reach choose strike, the block had to be successful (unless the action was what created the combat, in which case the action already succeeded), so the bleed is still blocked. There are two scenarios 1) Vampire A attacks Vampire B, who really needs to move (Haven Uncovered) Vampire C, wanting to give Vampire B some cover, blocks the action. Vampire A plays Form of Mist and goes on to attack Vampire B at +1 Stealth 2) Vampire A attacks Vampire B, as above Combat ensues. In this case, the action wasn't blocked, and since it wasn't blocked, playing Form of Mist would act as a Strike: Combat Ends, since there's no action to continue--the Haven Uncovered attack action has already concluded. If there's a fresh dose of whatever-it-is in the Wizard's watercooler, I suppose it could be ruled that combat ends and restarts, letting you force your opponent to burn manuver cards. But I doubt it. The official rule is, in fact, that "continuing" a combat action goes back to the start of action - without any further cost (if any) being paid for successful action resolution (I believe - they haven't actually stated this, but it follows from their ruling). So: Vamp A Bum's Rushes Vamp B. No one blocks. Action resolves by having A and B enter combat - A has an optional maneuver. A maneuvers (to use a sewer lid). B maneuver's back. A plays Form of Mist (superior) to end combat and "continue" the action. B announces his strike, whatever it may be. A's Form of Mist resolves, with the re-start of the Bum's Rush (+1 stealth). No one blocks. Action resolves by having A and B enter combat - A has an optional maneuver. A maneuvers (to use a sewer lid). B has no maneuvers, so stays at long. A plays a sewer lid. B chooses hand strike (for zero, at long range).
