Why Bother with Sabbat War?

I am now at the point of apathy. Why even try to get Sabbat War? It's only more disappointment. Here I've saved up cash over the last 3 months to spend on a case maybe more of the new V:TES expansion and I can't spend my money, I maybe lucky to get two boxes. So why should I even try to spend my cash anymore? I think it's great there's a new expansion, but when my local retailer has to go through loops to get cards, because there's so little product it makes me very sad and doesn't please the retailer either. :-[ So what is the deal? Why didn't White Wolf have enough guts to print more in the first place? Did they even match the printing of the Sabbat in units? Did they not really believe in the product? White Wolf should not pat themselves on the back for this, it's Halloween and I've got no cards! I guess it's time to go drown my sorrows in an adult beverage. So if you were actually lucky enough to get new cards on Halloween, I'm happy for you. As for me it's time to go do some serious freak watching as the Village Halloween Parade is only a few hours away. :-] Believer in conspiracy, Joe C. - V:EKN Prince of Columbia, SC Editor: Tzimisce Clan Newsletter www.warghoul.com Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy.

There would have been no point White Wolf losing a shit-load of money on V:TES. This tests the water. If a re-print is done, they can correct the texts that they made errors on (e.g. Immortal Grapple, which is missing a word as I recall) and go again. No great problems, since their speccing of this project would clearly have been to make a profit, however small. -- James Coupe | PGP Key 0x5D623D5D "And all the while I'm thinking things that I can never share with him. I'm gonna be short on cards as well but I'm not bitter. (Drink one for me though, Joe.) Steve Wieck had said that WW needed us to get new players into the game for them to make a little bit of money. That means he believed in the game enough to think the hardcore players would buy their cards and that the game is of a superior quality and would be able to attract enough new players to make some money. The hardcore base of players just purchased more than anyone could have predicted. -Robert Robert Goudie Chairman, V:EKN rob...@vtesinla.org

But whatever you do, try not to think up reasons for blaming White Wolf. I've never been in the business myself, but to me predicting this stuff seems to be utterly impossible. They have to pull a number out of basically thin air way ahead of time. They guess too much, they lose their shorts. They guess too little,...well...you get what we have now. This part of it sounds pretty thankless to me. Just be glad they took the risk at all. Fred

I'm pretty miffed, myself, though I don't know who to blame . . . we didn't get any cards today, either (Boulder, Colorado). We all put in our orders ahead of time for many boxes, but apparently the distributor says they didn't get them in time themselves -- though they might show up later in the week. If they did, they'd not been unsure of whether they'd make Final Nights or not. There's also different grades of "success" as well, even if they expected success it doesn't mean they knew HOW successful SW would be. Anyway, isn't it possible for you to order SW from WW or from Potomac or something? No store sells SW in the city where I live, I just pre.ordered it from a big store in Gothenburg (pretty much other side of the country). I haven't gotten my cards yet but I should within a week. Retailers put in an order at Esdevium (or whoever their distributor might be, Esdevium are a large and useful such distributor in the UK and Europe). Esdevium say "Sorry, sold out" (if, indeed, they have). Esdevium write to White Wolf and say "Hey, we've just had orders for another 1000 boxes - you got any more?" And either White Wolf do, or they get the feedback that more boxes are wanted. The actual printing of the cards, by all accounts, didn't take that long at all, either. The rumour mill suggested that play-testing went on until rather late. [ quoted text not captured ]

Maybe a little in that retailers won't fear stocking it in the future. However, I think the sell-out hurts them because: 1. It costs WW a lot more to get the presses running a second time than it would've to just print more in the first place. 2. Some bad feelings among the loyal fans (We've seen what that can do to this game!) 3. No cards to give away as prize support (they printed enough (or so they thought) to leave themselves some supply for prize support.) 4. No draw for new players. (It does little good to have pre-con starters, playmats, and demos if there is no product to buy once the new players become interested) -- Robert [ quoted text not captured ]

Maybe a > little in that retailers won't fear stocking it in the future. I disagree. It may not benefit the game for the reasons we were hoping it would, I'll grant. (As you say, prize support, draw for new players, and I'll add: to increase variety and availability of stock for sealed deck.) But if nothing else, a great deal of the demand for Sabbat cards, particularly Sabbat rare cards and in-demand uncommons like Decapitate and Immortal Grapple, will be sated. The ability of more players to make decks less constrained by supply is only good for the game, IMHO. On balance, the game is much better off for the existence of Sabbat Wars; even if they never do a second printing. Fred

Joe and others in similar straits, my sincere regrets. We did put a serious amount of capital at risk in re-launching V:TES, and we were conservative in our opening print run given the game's 4 yr hiatus. I certainly did not expect to have even the dedicated, veteran fans be hard pressed to find cards. While it's great news that everything is selling out, it's also been frustrating fielding distributor, retailer, and player complaints about lack of availablity while being powerless to change it. A second print run does look highly probable, but it will be a bit of a wait. Steve

Conservative maybe putting it mildly. =) It's still likely to appear to prospective new players that V:TES is still on hiatus, as the product will be in stores for but a few weeks at best. I'll still do my best to bring in new players, but it looks like I'll be handing out more Jyhad backs than V:TES backs for a long time to come. > I certainly did not expect to have even the dedicated, > veteran fans be hard pressed to find cards. I guess the thing that probably bugged me most last night is that if I hadn't tried to go through my local retailer I would've most likely had the cards sooner. But per earlier statements by you Steve you had asked/pushed us (the V:TES community) to try and purchase from the retailers instead of ordering from larger internet suppliers. So I resisted the temptation of cheap boxes and placed my order through my local gaming store. What a folly that has been. On the bright side though, we'll hopefully have cards in Columbia on Thursday. So I've got something to look forward to on Thursday night besides Atomic Wings and cheap bud light. > While it's great news that everything is selling out, it's also been > frustrating fielding distributor, retailer, and player complaints > about lack of availablity... Why? because the cards, having been printed once, can be printed again. And it's too early yet to be disgruntled about supply, etc...I figure most of it is in the channel (marketing, not The English) somewhere.

In article <3a007ec7....@news.atl.mediaone.net>, [ quoted text not captured ] It's still wasn't in the shop on said release date because the shop's main distributors had nothing left. That resulted in the said shop having to result to finding a secondary market distributor to fill the case worth of orders, it also meant the store couldn't make any actual sales on the said release date. Maybe the stock is in the "English Channel" who knows? But one thing is for certain, it wasn't at my retailer on Halloween. So Mike, how am I supposed to feel? Actually, that goes for everybody who's been gnashing teeth that their orders didn't fill on 10/31. I've got two (or four, if I can find my credit card again) boxes on pre-order. They weren't in the Atlanta shops yesterday, and may not be today. I don't care if I don't see them for another week or a month or a quarter, as long as the order is filled. I just don't see the point in getting ticked off because someone else got cards sooner than I did. If the shop says "Sorry, we won't have any, ever, and your order is cancelled," then I would be disgruntled, and/or order direct from W.W. The facts that a) new cards exist, and b) the original print run may not have met original demand, tell me that either the current stock will emerge, and filter around to meet demand, or there will be another print-and-distribute cycle.

Basically the next print run and distribution according to W.W. puts it out in stores sometime around early winter 2001. Great so any new players between Nov-on will have nothing to buy, is this a good thing? For me No. Is it something that a promoter of the game has a hard time with? For me Yes. I guess that is where this newsgroup and the Princes come in. They can make an estimate on how many players there are in any given region, who are new and so on. Though this is all hearsay, the way that VTES has been promoted and kept alive (and possibly blooming) over the last couple of yearts should account for something. Furthermore, don't get me wrong, I totally understand the reasons behind the lower than wanted availlability of SW. I did not really expect anything else. Me, i can wait, because after waiting for years, some month are nothing, but the new players must have cards very soon to stay with us. -- Khaleph Alendis, High Priest of Maizerets VEKN Setite Prince of Beauport http://www.oricom.ca/melkor/khaleph/ [ quoted text not captured ]

I recall seeing this one myself, though I don't own the card. (It was when we were all opening boosters and cooing over new cards and reprints etc., and someone was wondering if it had been errata-ed away from agg damage properly.) [ quoted text not captured ]

Thank you :) That's what I get for posting when I'm at work and don't have the cards in front of me. I'll have to check again. Could have sworn it was on Pulled Fangs. It is like Politics; for every 1 voice there are dozens silent. And how can you estimate that? And too, how many people will see Sabbat War as a NEW game and want it, simply because they try anything new? Take a count of all the Princes and all the Listed players, add 20 for each one, and you STILL will be short!
