Right. So through clever downloading of OpenOffice (and installing X11?
What the heck is X11?), I got the Archon to work on my mac. A few
questions/comments:
-Apparently, the machine will only automatically make up seating for you
if you have a 3R+F tournament. Why not for a 2R+F tournament?
-With the auto seating, my suspicions were confirmed--the first round
seems to be just all the players in order (i.e. seating for R1 is player
1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and then 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and so on). So when you go to a
tournament and sign in with the organizer, and he puts you and the 3
other guys you drove down with into the Archon in order that you signed
up, you will spend your first game sitting with the 3 other guys you
drove in with (unless you are over a table break, in which case, you
will be with a couple guys you drove in with, and the other couple will
be sitting next to each other at the next table...). In the order in
which you registered for the tournament. Can this be fixed? Or can
people who are using Archon make a larger effort to actually randomize
people? Or something? That whole "your first game is the guys you play
with every week, in order" aspect of tournaments tends to blow.
-When messing around with the Archon, it seems like the "Standings" page
doesn't auto fill in, and you need to manually add players. Is this
correct?
-I couldn't get the "methuselah" page to show game wins. I ran a fake
tournament with 15 fake players, and went through each round and put in
VPs, but there wasn't anywhere to put in GWs (well, there was, but it
was a locked cell), and the program didn't seem to update these
anywhere. What am I doing wrong?
-I couldn't get the final game to indicate standings--the cells for
"standing" would always just say "pending". What was I doing wrong?

The organizers should randomly assign each entrant an initial seat and
then number players according to how they are seated. If they're not
doing this then they're not running the tournament correctly. :)

My standings page sets auto-filled in, but I have experienced some
general weirdness using The Archon v1.2 in OO on Linux. The 1.3
version that I found at http://www.tenerdo.org/TheArchon1.3.zip works
much better.

This is one of the problems I had in OO that was fixed in v1.3.

Not one of the weirdnesses I saw.
P.S. X11 is the Unix / Linux windowing environment.

Ah, see, yeah, I think people keep not doing this. But it is also non
intuitive based on the program--it seems like it *should* work such that
people come up to the organizer, give them information, organizer inputs
it, and then machine does the rest. But I guess not.
Can you put in player information *except* their number, and then put
the numbers in later, out of order? I gotta try that out.

Oh, ok. So there is a newer version. Lemme get that one.

It will do 2R + F, too. Just use rounds 2-3 and skip round 1.

Usually I will use the V:EKN cards to randomly assign seating in the
first round, then pick up the cards and start entering them in the
Archon. This way the actual seating of round one is random but is
also entered as the Archon expects.

No. (Not in the MS Office version, anyway.)
In the MS version, the Standings page fills in as soon as the
Methuselahs all have player numbers.
(Hint: add all of the player names, and then number them at the very
end.)

(MS Office version)
On the individual rounds, when you enter the VPs, it will
automatically assign the GW when you have entered valid numbers.
There is no entry of GW manually anywhere.

Heh--this one seems like it works better, but the version I downloaded
comes with already input information (looks like demo/test info). So
do I have to open one up, empty it out, and save one that is empty? Or
did something strange happen?

Oh, ok. So the way to go about things is to input all relevant player
info into the Methuselah page, and then set up the first round randomly
the old fashion way, and then arbitrarily indicate players as 1, 2, 3
based on their seating in the first round. And then put those numbers
into Archon. Or something like that.

Well, people could also read the instructions. Crazy, I know.

Um. No.
That's like saying it will do 4+F, just use round1 twice.
For most cases, using two of three rounds that have been optimized for three
rounds means very poor results for two rounds, given the trade-offs that had to
be made in those two rounds to get the three round set to work well.
Two rounds are simple enough to do by hand (and doing by hand will yield much
better results).

Well, sure. And yet they don't. And we regularly end up with the first
round of "these 4 guys I just drove 4 hours in a car with and some
other guy...".
I have virtually never used excel before in my life, so I don't know
the ins and outs, but is it possible to set it up such that it
randomizes people for you? I mean, yeah, people could just follow the
directions. But if it isn't difficult to do, it strikes me as a good
idea. But then, I'm not the one doing the programing :-)

Unquestionably, verifiably, yes.
It will preseat all three rounds.

No, it isn't anything like that.

Whatever.
Using rounds 1+2 or 1+3 or 2+3 are all the same. Predator prey
relationships will not be repeated. Which is all that is truly
required for a 2 round event.
>Two rounds are simple enough to do by hand (and doing by hand will yield much

Then the program needs to be improved. 1+2 should be identical to
this "by hand" you speak of. If it isn't, and your opinion is that it
is without value, then I'll certainly have to stop linking to the
useless thing.

It is obvious that that is not the case.
The program is first an foremost a tracking mechanism, not a seating mechanism.
The seating mechanism was added for 3+F because 3+F is a popular format and
doing 3+F seating well is time consuming to do by hand.
2+F, while popular, is easy to do by hand.

There are many things which do not provide optimal 2+F VTES seating.
Fortunately, that is not the sole criteria for utility.
Link as you see fit.

While I agree with your statement, I have found that rounds 1 and 3
are more similar than rounds 1 and 2 (or rounds 2 and 3), so when
I do a 2R+F then I use rounds 1 and 2.

No, it isn't obvious.

In theory perhaps. In actual practice, in hundreds of tournaments, it
is primarily a seating mechanism and secondarily, poorly, a tracking
mechanism.
Are there a large number of tournaments that do require the 100+
seating that is included? Or is this in The Archon primarily for the
North American Champs?

Scott,
Are you saying that a seating chart for a 2R+F tournament
could be created that would better satisfy these conditions?

1. No pair of players repeat their predator-prey relationship.
2. No pair of players share a table through all three rounds[WP].
3. Available VPs are equitably distributed.
4. No pair of players share a table more often than necessary.
5. A player doesn't sit in the fifth seat more than once.
6. No pair of players repeat the same relative position[WP][*].
7. A player doesn't play in the same seat position[WP].
8. Starting transfers are equitably distributed.

Optimal seatings exist and could be found for 2+F, naturally.

To the best of my recollection, there have never been more than 90
players at an NAC event.
The 100 plus seating has been used multiple times at the European
Championship events.

As I've said, it's easy enough to do on demand.
Moreover, learning how to do seating by hand is a very good skill for organizers
to have, so that they can better handle drops and adds.

I don't know how many of you are Macro-Proficient... but for us PCers
out there (who aren't the ones shown in those Mac ads) I am
considering sitting down and doing a personal version of The Archon
that uses Macros. Depending on how easy it is for me to do this, it
may or may not have the ability to perform Player Add/Drops...
If there are those of you out there who are excellent with ExcelVBA,
I'm more than happy to take advice or receive other versions
previously created.
For those who are interested... it would start by using the "VEKN
Optimised Seating" Tables, but I will potentially also sit down and
figure out how to do the 9-criteria above (including some kind of
"Where Possible"... if VBA can even create a "Where Possible" scenario
without me suddenly becoming a VBA guru)
