There has been several flamewars which contain words that I do not fully understand, like "killfile", "trolling" etc. In order to fully "enjoy" of those, is there any e-wordbook/file/something freely available that has explained them? Thanks in advance, Antero

Special features of some of the earliest newsreaders (UNIX ascii-text stuff) included the ability to automatically mark-as-read (i.e., never see) posts that matches certain patterns (patterns kept in a "kill file"). Typical usage was to kill posts by certain people who became known for posting more noise than signal. Trolling is the act of posting inflammatory or outrageous content in the hopes of drawing responses. -- LSJ (vte...@white-wolf.com) V:TES Net.Rep for White Wolf, Inc. Additional usage is to kill posts by people who will cause _you_ to post more noise than signal. Frequently trolls get put in killfiles, because while many people know to "not feed the troll", it's just too tempting sometimes. >Trolling is the act of posting inflammatory or outrageous content >in the hopes of drawing responses. Slight clarification: Trolling is ALSO the act of posting this same content in the hopes of disrupting the normal conversation and functioning of the group. Often this is assisted by crossposting to several unrelated (or diametrically opposed) groups, in hopes that a bunch of off-topic replies will be generated by the denizens of THOSE groups. It's entirely possible that a search on rec.pets.cats will yield more information. Also any search on soc.politics or comp.os.advocacy.*. -- Derek a host is a host from coast to coast and no one will talk to a host that's close unless the host that isn't close is busy, hung, or dead
