Can I play daring the dawn after a combat when I am acting? Or do
action modifiers need specific card text, like freak drive, to enable
them being played at that time?

I can't say for 100% certainly, but I would say no that you cannot,
unless you've found a way to continue the action after the combat.
Being blocked normally means your action has failed, and so after the
combat is done, the action ends (unless you have somehow continued it)
immediately. So you can play modifiers that work at the end of the
action, like Freak Drive, but no other generic modifiers, like Daring
the Dawn (which seems to be a fairly expensive way to cycle the card).

Right. As in: "the latter: action modifiers can only be played before action
resolution in general."
