We know paralysis has been officially removed from the game, but we feel it adds a little more flavor and have decided to keep it around. That's not the issue... Okay, since paralysis exists in our little universe, a question has come up about preventing it. Some argue that damage prevention cards or equipment should be able to take care of it. Some think only cards that prevent ALL damage are strong enough. And still others think that there is no defense other than S:CE or dodge (or my favorite -- maneuver to long and wave at them, shoot them, whatever). I'm not looking for an official ruling (since paralysis officially doesn't exist) but I wouldn't mind some input from the more experienced players. Jenifer

[ quoted text not captured ] Official Ruling: since paralysis isn't damage (just as steal blood and destroy equipment aren't damage), the effect cannot be prevented by "prevent damage" effects, even if such effects are "prevent all damage" effects. Dodge will work, of course, since it negates the effect(s) of the opposing minion's strike on the dodging minion and any non-Retainer cards on the dodging minion. S:CE will work, since S:CE resolves first and no other strike-resolution occurs after it. Rowan Ring is useless at long range, since it doesn't do "R" damage and doesn't say "Strike: Ranged", so maneuvering to long would protect you from that strike. -- L. Nonetheless, the V:tES rulebook still took space to explain what "paralyze" meant. Since the old set is still officially "part of the game" (it is perfectly legal to play Concealed Weapon or Movement of the Slow Body or Rotschreck), paralysis was never officially removed from the game to the best of my knowledge. The paralysis cards were, however, banned in tournament play. I'm not sure why, since paralysis does not seem any more confusing than Rotschreck. I thought I covered all the bases, but now someone wants to know what happens when you smack an ally with the Ring (or old stake). Majority says not a damn thing since allies can't get toporized. Of course, you can add damage to it with a bit of potence... Jenifer

In article <34EDE4...@swbell.net>, Jenifer Wierum <jwi...@swbell.net> writes [ quoted text not captured ] Nope. It's not a damage dealing strike ergo you can't add damage to it. Same thing with Reverend Blackwood and Theft. Similar thing with not being allowed to play bonding for the stealth on a political action. You can modify something which is at zero (so if my hand damage goes down to zero from, say, Disease I can still bump it back up), but you can't modify something which just isn't there. -- James Coupe (remove your inhibitions to reply) You were my strength when I was weak. You were my voice when I couldn't speak. You were my eyes when I couldn't see. You saw the best there was in me. Lifted me up when I couldn't reach. You gave me faith because you believed. I'm everything I am because you loved me.

Correct. V:tES rulebook: "A card that can 'paralyze' a vampire will send the vampire to torpor tapped. The card is then placed on the vampire. The paralyzed vampire cannot be untapped during the untap phase. Any vampire who encounters the vampire in torpor may rescue him or her without burning blood, and the vampire can still be diablerized." The wording makes clear that "paralyze" only effects vampires. > Of course, you can add damage to it with a bit of potence... To Stake, yes, but not to Rowan Ring. You cannot add damage to a strike that is not a damage dealing strike. [ quoted text not captured ]

Correct, since "this effect taps a vampire and sends him to torpor." (VTES rulebook, glossary - similar statement in section 22.1) > Of course, you can add damage to it with a bit of potence... You can, but it won't do any good. The Rules Team ruled that adding damage to a strike that doesn't do damage in the first place (like Rowan Ring) has no effect. -- L.
