Hi LSJ, hope all's well. I see White Wolf has wisely decided to release the Sabbat expansion on my birthday :o) A few questions which I believe haven't been asked before... 1: Re No-Repeat Action --------------------------------- During my turn Fuzzy the Garou uses the Garou ability to rush Blythe, planning a quick game of 'Burn the Witch'. Sadly Fuzzy forgot to check the weather report. Who would have thought that lightning would strike that exact spot three times? Fuzzy burns. Regina immediately Compells Fuzzy's Spirit (superior). Fuzzy is returned to the active region. Rulings tell me that cards remember nothing other than whether they were burned or discarded. So... Fuzzy remembers she was burned, but not that she had previously rushed Blythe during the turn. Still during the same turn Fuzzy rushes Blythe using the Garou ability. Is this ok WRT the no-repeat action rule? ------------------------------------------------------- 2: Re 'General Ruling' ----------------------------- I noted the following comment in one of your posts recently. >Illusions of the Kindred cannot be played if your Crypt is empty, >by the general ruling against playing effects that choose/target >something when there is no "something" to choose/target. I'm not sure I've ever seen this general ruling documented before, has it ever been posted? How does this stack against the fact that it's legal to taste for zero blood? What about minion tapping for zero blood? Misdirecting zero minions? This is just the tip of the iceberg, there are many examples of a card or effect targeting a non-entity. Is it a general ruling you're ready to defend? If so, please could you clarify the text of the ruling so I can pose my interrogation correctly :o) 3: Re Damage Prevention ------------------------------------ What is the reasoning behind the decision to make it permissible to play global damage conversion cards (skin of night, basic) in the absence of damage, but not global damage prevention cards (skin of steel, superior)? Thanks LSJ -- On the net no one can tell you're a dog. Peace & Mung Beans Dog

If the production process doesn't proceed as planned, your birthday present from WW may be a belated one. :-) > 1: Re No-Repeat Action > --------------------------------- > During my turn Fuzzy the Garou uses the Garou ability to rush Blythe, > [...] Fuzzy burns. > Regina immediately Compells Fuzzy's Spirit (superior). > > Fuzzy is returned to the [ready] region. Yes. Playing Cards * If a card targets (chooses, selects, is played on, etc.) another card, then the card can only be played if an appropriate target is available. Examples: Strike: Steal/Destroy Equipment/Weapon cannot be used if the opposing minion doesn't have a suitable Equipment/Weapon to be destroyed/stolen. [RTR 28-SEP-1998] > How does this stack against the fact that it's legal to taste for zero > blood? Taste doesn't choose or target the blood. The vampire simply gains "an amount" of blood based on some figure (which might be zero). > What about minion tapping for zero blood? Provided there's a controlled vampire to choose (for zero), no problem. > Misdirecting zero minions? Sure. > This is just the tip of the iceberg, there are many examples of a card or > effect targeting a non-entity. None of the above target a non-entity. > Is it a general ruling you're ready to defend? I hope I'm ready to defend them all... :-) (Part of the job description, I'm afraid.) > If so, please could you clarify the text of the ruling so I can pose my > interrogation correctly :o) See the cited RTR: http://www.deja.com/getdoc.xp?AN=395676064 > 3: Re Damage Prevention > ------------------------------------ > What is the reasoning behind the decision to make it permissible to play > global damage conversion cards (skin of night, basic) in the absence of > damage, but not global damage prevention cards (skin of steel, superior)? Skin of Night doesn't target any damage - it gives the vampire a "for the remainder of the round" ability. If Skin of Steel said "this vampire can prevent all damage from all strikes for the remainder of the round", then it could be played at any time in the round, whether damage had been received or not. -- LSJ (vte...@white-wolf.com) V:TES Net.Rep for White Wolf, Inc. The NRA rule does not apply to minions that have been burned and brought back to the active region. [LSJ 08/10/1998] > >Illusions of the Kindred cannot be played if your Crypt is empty, > >by the general ruling against playing effects that choose/target > >something when there is no "something" to choose/target. > > I'm not sure I've ever seen this general ruling documented before, > has it ever been posted? It was posted in the most recent batch of rules team rulings. > How does this stack against the fact that it's legal to taste > for zero blood? > What about minion tapping for zero blood? > Misdirecting zero minions? Irrelevent. Zero is a valid "target". A null set is not. > This is just the tip of the iceberg, there are many examples > of a card or effect targeting a non-entity. Name one. This ruling follows the earlier precedent of not being able to play Concealed/Disguised Weapon if you had no weapon in your hand. > What is the reasoning behind the decision to make it permissible > to play global damage conversion cards (skin of night, basic) in > the absence of damage, but not global damage prevention cards > (skin of steel, superior)? The wording of Skin of Night makes it clear that you may play it early in the round as there is no implied timing other than before damage resolution: Aggravated damage is treated as normal damage for this vampire for the remainder of this round. Skin of Steel, on the other hand, does have an implied timing: Prevent all damage from a strike. As above, and prevent all damage from opponent's strikes for the remainder of this round. Since you cannot prevent damage from a strike until there is a strike (required at both inf. and sup., per "as above"), the timing restriction on Skin of Steel is quite appropriate.
