My wife and a friend of ours recently pooled the Vtes cards that we've
aquired from bookstore clearances and started playing the game. We love
it and have spent hours playing and learning its complexities.
The only little problem is that I seem to be rather horrible at making a
deck, as I have gotten smashed in EVERY game. Great fun, but I'd like
to be a bit of a threat to the other players for once. Can anyone lead
me to a source of deck configurations that use ONLY Vtes cards (we don't
have any expansion set cards yet, just the first set)?
Much appriciated...

I'm going to try to keep this short because I can ramble on about Jyhad
forever. There are enough good cards in the original set to kick pretty
much any deck. The thing is you want to have the right cards in your hand
when you need them. Best way is to compose your deck using ratios or %.
I usually compose (depending on the deck of course) my decks 20% Master
Cards, 20% Reaction, 30% Combat, and 30% Action. This usually guarantees
at least one of each type in my hand at any time. The rest is deciding at
what time to play each card. If your predator is bleeding you for 1 with
a 2pt. minion and you have a deflection in your hand, it might be a good
idea to wait for that 8pt. 3 bleeder(or something like that)
Master cards are very powerful so I try to put at least 3 in a 90 card
deck - some in our playgroup play with 400 card combat decks. Sorry, but
off the top of my head, I don't know of any sources of deck consruction
strictly for the original set, yet (Ive only had my modem for 1.5 weeks)
but you'll soon get the hang of it, especially if you keep playing with
the same group. You'll start to notice trends in their playing style as
well as deck construction. Whew! Ive said enough - hope I was of some
help. Good luck.

A 400 card combat deck??!! Do you have a 36 member playgroup? (and my
friends complain about long games...) or do you guys just ignore the
library rules? (and what's the point of having a 400 card deck anyway?
Oh Well....

I'm perplexed, too. V:tES has an _upper_ card limit of 40 plus 10 per
player, meaning 90 cards, max. for a five player game. Your 400 card
combat monsters should be made aware of this rule...

There are a lot of on-line resources available. The URL below will
get you into the Jyhad (V:tES) web ring, with links to other useful
sites.... good luck..

Point your web browser at http://www.io.com/~mlangsdo/RPGs/Jyhad/Decks/
Its the largest archive of Jyhad decks that I'm currently aware of (though
the archives from Jyhad On-line, if there are any, might have surpassed
me). A bunch of the older decks there were made before the expansions and
might be helpful.
Or if you care to name a concept ("Brujah Rush Combat" or "Ventrue Vote") I
could probably whip together a "standard" deck of that type, and mail you
the required cards.

re:Do you have a 36 member playgroup? We wish. Living in Toronto, no one
plays Jyhad for some reason. We try to keep up with every rule and are
well aware of the 90 card max. rule - for tournaments. When we play in
our playgroups the average size is 150 card decks. Our playgroup style
is predominantly combat. There is still a good mix of the bleed and vote
decks. The reason for the large decks, I guess is the possibility of more
to do than the regular things decks do. (Those cards that people would
otherwise not put in the deck to keep it 90 and under) I thought more
out there played with_BIG_decks? (Anyone?) And our games don't last that
long - from an hour to an hour and a half for a 5 player game. When
you're playing with x Infernal Pursuits and x Aura Readings in a combat
deck, combat can be so exciting. Oh, by the way Thoughts Betrayed and
Kiss of Ra are the only cards banned from our playgroup. Any thoughts?
(no pun) Thanks in advance.

The posters weren't refering to the 90-card max for tournaments,
they're refering to the max (40 + 10*#players) for normal games,
as defined in the rulebook.
If you play a two-player game, your max deck size is 60 (40 + 20).
In a six-player game, you max deck size is 100 (40 + 60).
To get a 400 card deck, you'd have to play with 36 people
(40 + 360 = 400).
Rulebook:
1. Equipment Needed
Each player must have at least twelve cards in her crypt and forty
cards in her library. Each player may add up to ten cards to her
library for each player in the game. Thus, in a six-player game,
each player may have a minimum of forty library cards and a maximum
of one hundred; in a two-player game, each player can have from
forty to sixty library cards.
> When we play in
> our playgroups the average size is 150 card decks.
A 150-card library requires at least eleven players (40 + 110 = 150) at
the table.

The situation in my play group is, to some extent, similar. We're reduced
to only 3 regular players, with a few occasional additional players and
people who play other people's decks, and moved from CL to NL games (after
I convinced them to try it...). We haven't tried enforcing any upper limit
on the number of cards in a deck, even though we know there should be one.
It's never been a problem, and deck size tends to reach a natural maximum
at about 120-150 - anything over that gets shuffling problems and bumping into
the table sends your towering deck all over the place, especially if you're
playing with card sleeves :)
Of course, combat and vote decks tend to be the largest, but we're hardly
playing anything _but_ combat and vote decks. Well, combat decks, and my vote
deck, that is - until the balance shifts again.

At first, I was going to rail agaist this... (the rule on deck
construction is part of the main rules, not just for tournaments,
etc...) but of course you can have any house rules you'd like. I
just don't understand this particular one. V:tES deck construction
for me is about resource management and balance... doing a variety of
things with a limited amount of space in the deck. This excess might
be fun for a while, but I suspect it'd remove a quality of deck
construction that I find appealing...

I usually build 80 card decks, with the 4 player game in mind. I would
gladly, however, put an 80 card deck up againsta 6 player game any
time. Beyond that, special deck construction needs to be taken into
consideration. At some point, you have to ask yourself this in a 8
player game: can my deck last to finish off at least 6 of the players?
I agree that a 400 card deck is totally illegal, I would never fight
against one, even if I figured that I might have an advantage of
getting the cards I need as opposed to just having all the very cool
cards in a deck.
