Hullo Kurt, Blood to Water has been errated (is that a word?) so that it cannot be used at range. The 'otherwise' refers to allies, and you use it in the immortal grapple phase. Your friend is lying their butt off. James B.

One of my friends understood it incorrectly, and he maintained his confusion in the face of our explanations for a while. According to the sweet, sweet goodness of LSJ's page, it reads: Blood to Water Combat Thaumaturgy 2 blood Normal: Only usable before strike resolution. If the opposing minion is a vampire, he or she burns 3 blood; otherwise, he or she is burned. Not usable during the first round of combat. Superior: As above, but if the opposing minion is a vampire, he or she burns 5 blood. The "otherwise" refers to the opposing minion *being* an Ally. Blood to Water won't burn vampires. [TOM 960607] Can't be used at long range. [RTR 960708] Can't be played until range is set. [RTR 961113] What confused my friend was that first part, the ruling on "otherwise." It seemed pretty intuitive to the rest of us, because buring blood is not the same as damage. And although thaumaturgy is good, it isn't *that* good. So...If you understood it as "if the vampire can't burn 3 (or 5) blood, it is burned," then it is less effective against vampires, but otherwise, there's no new errata as far as I can tell... Xian

One ruling has been made: It is only usable /immediately/ before strike resolution, and therefore only if the round is at close range (since it doesn't say "ranged"). Treat "before strike resolution" as a specific phase in combat: 1. Enter combat (Thought's Betrayed) 2. Before Range (Torn Signpost) 3. Determine Range (maneuvers) 4. After Range (Immortal Grapple) 5. Choose Strikes 6. Before strike resolution (Blood to Water) 7. Resolve strikes In practice, 5 and 6 are combined into 1 step (allowing Claws to be played before or after Blood to Water). -- And an explanation usually has to be made regarding the effects of Blood to Water on a vampire who doesn't have enough blood: The semi-colon on card text before the "otherwise" indicates that the "otherwise" introduces the part that happens when the opposing minion is not a vampire. That is: "If the opposing minion is an Ally, then the Ally is burned; otherwise he burns 3 blood". So, as with all "burn blood" effects, if the vampire doesn't have enough blood to burn, then he merely burns all of his remaining blood and ignores the excess amount. -- L. Thanx everyone for clearing this up. I read it right, my friend didn't and he said it had been errated. Now to time to kick his butt. Kurt -- Mr Kurt Heyder, kurt....@cs.uwa.edu.au, First Year Student
