hey all!
i'm a relatively new player to jyhad, and i've set up a deck, but i'm
still a bit iffy about some rules...
my toreador deck is set up to completely avoid combat. so i've put in
combat ends cards.
my question is: in what order do the cards come into effect?
example... one of my toreador vampires attempts a bleed on bob. bob's
vampire manages to block it and combat is entered. bob decideds on
his strike and i decide that for my strike i'm going to play a combat
ends card (either elysium, police station, or majesty). do i get
out of combat before any damage is done?
what about if i manage to intercept bob's vampire instead and we enter
combat and the above happens (he decides to strike, i decide to end
combat)?
would any of the cards work differently? i know the majesty one is
kind of different, but would it work differently than say police
station?
thanks!

Strikes resolve in the following order:
1. Strike: Combat Ends
2. Strike: Dodge
3. any strike done with First Strike
4. any other strike

Yes.

Combat Ends still resolves first.

Police Station provides a press, and presses come after strike resolution,
so the Police Station would not protect you from the opponent's strike(s)
that round.

I'll try to clear things up!

You should know there is no strategy in Jyhad that always works.
There's a counter to everything, so when putting these decks together
you really have to think about how people might stop your deck. For
example, I myself recently made a Toreador deck which wanted to avoid
combat as much as possible. In my environment, there was a
proliferation of close range Potence decks, which use Immortal Grapple
(which, if range is determined to be close, is played and prevents both
minions from using non-hand strikes like Strike: Combat Ends). So I
needed to use Celerity to maneuver to long range, and then play Majesty.
> my question is: in what order do the cards come into effect?
So combat is this really complex process, and this doesn't cover
everything, but it goes something like this:
1. Determine Range. Starting with the acting minion, both minions may
use maneuvers to go to long range, or to cancel the opposing minion's
maneuver. Effects played before range is determined must be played
_before_ this stage starts. Example:
A: "Here comes Kallista, Master Sculptor to bleed you."
B: "Nigel, the Shunned blocks."
A: "OK, we get into a fight."
A: "I'm the action minion. I don't maneuver."
B: "Nigel goes to long with Behind You."
A: "I cancel that maneuver, putting us back to close, with Flash."
B: "I don't maneuver."
A: "Me neither. We're at close."
Effects that are played once range is determined, like Immortal Grapple,
are played now.
2. Choose Strikes. Again starting with the acting minion, both minions
declare strikes.
A: "I play Vampiric Speed, so my strike is Strike: Dodge, and I have an
optional press."
B: "My strike is Scorpion Sting at superior, which is at +1 hand damage
and cannot be dodged."
Any modifications of strikes would be played now, like Wolf Claws.
3. Resolve Strikes.
A: "My Dodge resolves first, but it was canceled by your strike. So I
got no strike."
B: "My strike was to hit you for 2. You take 2 damage."
A: "I prevent one with Sideslip. Kallista takes one."
4. Additional Strikes.
A: "I Blur to get two additional strikes."
B: "I have no additional strike."
A: "I punch you for one, and then I punch you for one again."
B: "OK, Nigel burns two blood."
5. Press. Starting with the acting minion, each minion may press to
continue combat, or to cancel a press to continue. A "press to end" is
_only_ usable to cancel a press to continue.
A: "I don't press." [Wanting combat to end.]
B: "I play Boxed In, pressing to continue."
A: "I press to end with my press from Vampiric Speed."
B: "OK, combat ends."
> example... one of my toreador vampires attempts a bleed on bob. bob's
> vampire manages to block it and combat is entered. bob decideds on
> his strike
Since you're the acting minion, you declare your strike first.
> and i decide that for my strike i'm going to play a combat
> ends card (either elysium, police station, or majesty).
Elysium is played at the beginning of combat (before step 1), and
immediately ends combat.
Majesty is played during the Declare Strikes phase, and if it
successfully resolves, combat ends before the other minion's strike
resolves.
Police Station gives you a press to end combat, but this is only usable
after strikes have happened.
> do i get
> out of combat before any damage is done?
With a successful Majesty and Elysium, yes. With Police Station, no.
> what about if i manage to intercept bob's vampire instead and we enter
> combat and the above happens (he decides to strike, i decide to end
> combat)?
Bob's minion would be the acting one, and thus he would have to declare
Maneuvers, Strikes, and Presses before you. Other than that, nothing
changes.

wow! thanks so much!
i know a guy who's using the police station a *lot* and he's not using
it right either... he uses it at the beginning of the round to
completely avoid combat. (since he's still kind of new to it, i'll
assume it's an honest mistake...)
i think i'll probably remove the police station from my deck then,
since most of my vampires won't last one round in combat... :( and i
set them up to be useless in combat too...
thanks again!

This is the order of combat resolution:
Comabt Ends
Dodge
First Strikes
Other Strkes
>

Same rules apply
> would any of the cards work differently? i know the majesty one is

Elysium takes place right away (if I remember the card, it says to use it
before range is chosen.
Majesty is a Combat Ends card and therefore is resolved first after
strikes are chosen
Police Station (if I remember) is a press that can only be used to end
combat. Therefore, this takes place after the first round of combat has
ended. If bob plays a press card to continue combat, you can tap your
Police Station to press to end combat. Bob, then, has to play another
press card to continue combat.

Any combat cards with "strike-combat ends" have the power to stop the
combat before damage is traded. The notable weakness of this concept is
if you let yourself get into close ranged combat the other player may
have an Immortal Grapple card, potence combat card "only hand strikes
may be chosen". You wouldn't be allowed to play a combat ends, only a
hand strike.

i know... :( but since the deck is limited in size, it's kind of
difficult to cover everything. i set my deck up to end combats, high
intercept, no stealth, medium bleed bonuses, high vote. i've set up
the vampires and master cards to concentrate on presence (for votes),
auspex (for votes and intercept), as well as dominate (for votes and
influencing younger vampires)

thank you for showing that! right now, i'm still working through the
basic game, so we don't use range. the other decks aren't
concentrating on potency, so i don't have anything to worry about
there. but since i always won't be playing basic and those decks,
i'll add in some cards to have maneuvers.
thanks a lot tho for the information on the combat sequence. it
helped clear up a lot of questions...
one of my toreadors was forced into combat with a brujah the other
night. since i had pulled lousy cards and it was still early in the
game, i couldn't end the combat if my life depended on it. a lousy
three blood brujah took out my 8 toreador in one round... :(
