Yes, I realize that. But does the combat have to be at long range or can it
be done at short range?

My text just says that the retainer can be targeted by ranged damage.
It doesn't say anything about a need to actually do the damage at
range. I'd say any #R damage would work, at any range. Don't bring
your chaufer anywhere near a gunfight.

I believe it means that the vampire with the retainer in a brawl, can
specifically have his retainer taken out by a ranged weapon that the
opposing vampire may be using, regardless if its close or long range
combat.

Retainers can only be damaged by ranged damage, that is, nR strikes.
The combat doesn't have to be at long range; it just matters whether
the strike does ranged damage or not.
