CONTACT: Carrie Thearle Media Relations Wizards of the Coast, Inc. (206) 226-6500 A Vampire Venue A Day To Celebrate A Vampire Game Renton, Wash. (May 18, 1995) -- In celebration of the upcoming July release of the newly-named collectable card game Vampire: The Eternal Struggle (TM) (V: TES), Wizards of the Coast, Inc. is coordinating a frighteningly fun event. On June 24, 1995, retail stores across the U.S. and Canada (excluding Quebec) will celebrate Vampire Day. "It's an excellent way to introduce people to our second Deckmaster (TM) game, Vampire [formerly titled Jyhad (TM)], and help them acquire new blood... so to speak," says Tamra Fry, Vampire Day promotion coordinator. It's also a means by which we can showcase our exciting future plans for V: TES with promotional products and demonstrate that Jyhad and Vampire are 100% compatible. To help promote the event, Wizards of the Coast is holding a special contest in which the winner will receive a trip for two to Seattle, along with a very personalized prize. "This lucky person will be a vampire in a future V: TES expansion set," says Fry. "Wizards of the Coast artist Mark Tedin will paint the person's vampiric image." To take part in the contest, participants must complete contest forms and mail them back to Wizards of the Coast by August 1, 1995. These forms will only be available at participating stores. To find out what locations are involved in Vampire Day, call the event's coordinator, Tamra Fry, at (206) 226-6500, extension 1818. Other items, such as cards and posters, will be given away as well. Wizards of the Coast expects participation to be particularly high in cities like Salt Lake City, Utah, Anchorage, Alaska, Bloomington, Ind., College Station, Texas, Portland, Ore., and Tacoma and Seattle, Wash. The Camarilla, a vampire fan club started by several Wizards of the Coast employees, is especially large in these locations. Wizards of the Coast is encouraging retailers to be imaginative when they promote Vampire Day in their stores. "V: TES is a creative game, so why not get creative when you showcase Vampire Day?" says Fry. "Dress up like vampires, host a blood drive, or open your doors after dark." Wizards of the Coast is a young game company based in Seattle, Washington. The company created a worldwide sensation when it released its first trading card game, Magic: The Gathering (TM), in August 1993. Since then, more than half a billion Magic cards have sold around the globe. In April 1994, Wizards of the Coast opened a second branch in Glasgow, Scotland. Several months later, the company expanded into a third office in Antwerp, Belgium. The company currently employs more than 200 people in its three locales. I live in Bloomington, IN, and have a devil of a time finding people to play Jyhad with. I'll have to ask the local gaming stores (all two of them), and see if they've even heard of this Vampire Day. Isn't it interesting that WotC is working so hard to let people know that V:TES is a game about Vanpires. (C'mon guys, I thought that was what the name was supposed to do?) They decided not to offer a compromise (read as listen to us) on the card back/name change issue, but they sure snapped up all the advice on better marketing/visibility. Glad to see the effort, but it's too late WotC. So what will the new strategy be when (highly marketed, alienating) V:tes folds from lack of sales? (Just like a poorly marketed Jyhad.) Start thinking of a new name/game. (And don't forget to change the card backs again.) Remy leb...@u.washington.edu | It's not my fault!
