Tom,
My friends and I have been considering whether we wanted to get into
Jyhad when the cards come out this week and I was wondering if you might field
a couple of questions to make our decision a little easier. I'm hoping you will
be at liberty to discuss these now, but if not can you answer these when you
have been given leave to?
1) Are there anything that roughly correspond to M:tG's "colors" in Jyhad? I
know that blood points are spent to "cast spells", but I didn't know if the
clans or something similar were being incorporated into Jyhad like colors in
Magic...
2) What are going to be the differences between Boosters and Starters in Jyhad?
When I first got into Magic I was advised to buy a Starter deck to make sure
that I got plenty of land and then to buy boosters as they had a better shot at
the rare cards. Is there any reason that a diversity of Starters/Boosters would
be advantageous in Jyhad?
3) How many boosters to a box in Jyhad?
4) Any chance that a copy of the rules could be put on Marvin.Macc.Wisc.Edu? :]

Jyhad has both clans, and abilities. Some cards are only usable if you
have a vampire of a given clan in play, and (probably) would only be usable
by/on vampires of that clan. All vampires have abilities such as Animalism,
Fortitude, Presence, and so on, and a lot of effects require that the vampire
it's used on possess one or more of these skills. Also, these skills can be
had at either normal or superior levels, and some effects are more useful
if used on a vampire with the superior skill.

You'll probably have to get such advice unofficially. I think there it may
make a difference in the number of vampires you'd get per dollar, but other
than that, I wouldn't be able to speculate.

36, I think, but I can't find any kind of an order form at the moment...

Doubtful.

Why? The Revised rules are on there.

Here's the analogy. It sorta breaks down, but you'll get the point. You're
hiring a team of Magic players, each with different abilities, and each with
access to only one expansion set. You only have so much money to spend, and it
comes into your funds at a slow rate, but if your Magic player wins a duel, his
opponent and his team leader loses money. You have to balance funds with the
expansion sets and your player's ability to play. The player, of course, doesn't
play the duel and you do, but the cards you may play are limited by the player's
ability. And the duel is actually a somewhat simple combat system.
Something like that.
Now, ask yourself what it would be like to enter Magic without knowing what all
the expansion sets did, how they differed, and how to play Magic.

We played for fun last night, and it wasn't clear which cards were best, as it is
in Magic. I'd say that until you have an experienced player to help you, buy
starter packs so you can **play** the game. Wait for deckbuilding later.

A friend had a copy of the rules before playing the game. He said that you'd
definitely need the cards in front of you to understand what the heck was going on.
To quote the SGI group "The game was _definitely_ made by a Math PhD".

The closest I can come to this is "disciplines".
Most of the cards you play aren't actually played by "you" (the
Methusela you represent), but by your Minions (the Vampires you
control). Each Vampire has a set of magic powers, called
"disciplines". Many cards require a Vampire to have a certain
discipline in order to play them.
Some cards require a vampire to be of a particular clan (a family of
vampires with similar disciplines) in order to be played.

Actually, Disciplines are the main "colors" in Magic. There are lots of
cards that require the vampire playing them to have a certain Discipline.
(there are cards that require the vampire to be of a specific clan, but
they are much rarer) Most vampires have two to three different Disciplines,
though I've seen vampires with only one Discipline and some with six.
Each clan is associated with one Discipline, has a second Discipline it
usually has more often than not, and then there's often one or two more
Disciplines that crop up commonly among the more powerful vampires.
So if you want to do the analogy of the "two color" deck, you'd pick
four Disciplines, then start choosing vampires that have those Disciplines,
which would tend to pile in more vampires of certain clans than not,
especially for Disciplines like Protean and Thatamurgy, which would draw
Gangrel and Tremere by the droves.
Some Disciplines appear commonly in three Clans, others only appear in
one. What effect this will have on trading will be interesting. Will
Thatamurgy skill cards become more valuable because only Tremere commonly
have the talent? Or will the Discipline be less valuable because fewer
vampires can use it? Who knows....

I find that thinking of the disciplines as the colors and the vampires
as really weird combination mulitlands/creatures works fairly well. At
least, so far. I haven't tried any serious deckbuilding yet. We'll see
how it goes when I try it out.

Perhaps White Wolf had reservations about net.availability of the rules.
Unlike MtG, this game is a joint venture with another company using concepts
from pre-existing material.

But the disciplines also translate to the mana paradygm quite easily. You
need a certain discipline (ie, red mana) to cast claws of the dead (ie,
Giant Growth) So Jyhad is magic with TWO seperate types of mana... or
something.
Your mileage may vary...

I think what the problem here is that everyone who is learning how to
play needs to stop trying to make it into Magic. Its not.
