Hello everyone! I have played my first 'long-play' game of VtES, on wich both remaining players (I was *not* one of them, though...) fought each other untill they had almost no cards on their hands (about 4 each). On this game something funny happened: - One of the players brings out Victoria (Malk, "If Victoria is ready during your master phase, you may forfeit the edge to gain 2 pool). Vic's controller has the edge at the moment. The other player bleeds Vic's controller in a way that the victim will be ousted *unless* he forfeits the edge and gains the 2 pool. Question is this: Is this possible? Can one use a vamp's ability outside one's turn even if the description does not specify the timing? (more specifically, can Victoria burn the edge to gain the pool on someone else's turn?) It was 'ruled' that yes, that will be possible. The other player didn't like it much, especially because the victim said "Ok, I take the bleed and burn the edge to gain 2 pool" (instead of "I burn the edge to gain 2 pool and *now* I take the bleed"), but we just said that it was just a slip of the tongue, and all went by. The bleeder lost the game shortly afterwards, wich didn't help to calm him down :)) I would thank you a lot for any replies. If you would be ever so kind to reply to me directly... :) David Pontes -- 8[

Victoria's "during your master phase" restricts when you can use her ability, not just when she must be ready in order to use her ability later. You cannot use Victoria's ability at any time other than your master phase, and then only if Victoria is ready. In general, you may use a vampire's special ability at any time, as appropriate, so long as card text allows it. For example, Masika's ability applies at the end of every Meth's turn, Mariel can tap herself during a combat during anyone's turn, etc. -- L. It seems to me that the timing is specified as during your master phase. Vampires in torpor can't use special powers and special powers are in effect all the time unless the card says when the power is used. I would assume that since master phase is mentioned that you can only use it during your master phase. The power would be too strong if you could use it all the time, ie. you could bleed 3 times and gain 6 pool during your minion phase.

In all cases, a house ruling should take precedence, but I'll throw in my two cents worth: Umm, I don't think that that maneuver is legal. Just read the card text once again: "If Victoria is ready during your master phase, you may foreit the edge to gain 2 pool." ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ The key is the "during your master phase" stuff. For one thing, I'm assuming that the bleed did NOT occur during Victoria's controller's master phase. The text does NOT say "If Victoria WAS ready during...". The text links an action with a condition. My reading is that IF Victoria IS NOW ready during MY master phase, I may AT THAT POINT forfeit the edge to gain 2 pool. If the text were meant to allow one to forfeit the edge at some other, arbitrary point in time, it would state the time that I could play it OTHER than the one already specified. -spongy

DOUGDWISE

I hope the player who lost doesn't hold a grudge. It is _only_ a game. Yes, he should have finished off the other player because Victoria's special ability can only be used "during your master phase" and the use of her to gain pool during someone else's turn is wrong. Of course if you play with a house rule that way, fine. I find that there are less problems in situations of disputed cards with no house rules if you either a) flip a coin or, b) disallow anything the group can't agree on until later. If that is the case in _every_ situation nobody should feel as if they have been harmed. Just don't get to allowing some things the group is unsure of and not allowing others. People can get pretty upset if the decision allows things when it helps others and disallows something when it would help them. I'll get off my soap box now. ;-) Remember: it's just a game. If you're not having fun, you're not doing it right. Doug
