Hi all, I had gotten my wires crossed earlier and listed the wrong date for the 10th Anniversary set. The set is scheduled for a November release. My apologies for the slip up. -- LSJ (vte...@white-wolf.com) V:TES Net.Rep for White Wolf, Inc. Links to V:TES news, rules, cards, utilities, and tournament calendar: http://www.white-wolf.com/vtes/

So - any quick details on what will be in this set? The original Jyhad/VTES Vampires, perhaps? >Subject: Tenth Anniversary release date update. >From: LSJ vte...@white-wolf.com >Date: 3/27/2004 6:35 PM Central Standard Time >Message-id: <40661DCA...@white-wolf.com> [ quoted text not captured ] Robert M. What happened to moving away from the every-six-month schedule after Gehenna, as Steve Wieck suggested you would do in the post I quote below? Does White Wolf have some reason to believe "the player base" no longer prefers expansions every 9 - 12 months? Or have you simply decided not to care what we prefer? Chris From: "Steve Wieck" <stevewieck@w...> Newsgroups: rec.games.trading-cards.jyhad Subject: Black Hand Message-ID: <XDMya.31680$WR1.20693@f...> Date: Wed, 21 May 2003 11:16:19 -0400 Hello All, Just a note on the timing of the expansions to come after Anarchs. The player base, as represented by those of you who post on the newsgroup and forum, has been pretty clear on a preference of V:TES expansions coming about every 9 months or even a year. We listened to you and adopted that time frame between expansions (Anarchs coming almost 10 months after Cam Ed which came about 10 months after Bloodlines). We are however changing to a six month interval between expansions for both Black Hand which will come in November and then for the expansion to follow Black Hand coming in 2004. We have a couple important reasons for doing this, including: 1. Hobby game retailers are overwhelmed by the number of game products that are released every week of every year. When a game only comes onto their "radar screen" once every year, then that game never achieves any sort of prominence in their store. Retailers are more accustomed to two or three or more releases per year from any active card game. Both retailer feedback and specific sales data show us how V:TES drops out of retailer's vision when it has been too many months since the last release forced them to take note of the game and stock both new and prior expansions. 2. The expansion following Black Hand will relate to other White Wolf products released in early 2004, so we cannot hold it back more than 6 months after Black Hand. Knowing that this pace is faster than many of you prefer, we will aim to keep the size of these next two expansions modest - to a size similar to Anarchs. We understand that everyone has time and/or money constraints and we don't intend to expand the game faster than casual play and purchase can allow a player to remain current with the game's expansion. After these next two expansions we expect to resume a nine month interval between expansions. Steve Wieck White Wolf "LSJ" <vte...@white-wolf.com> wrote in message news:40661DCA...@white-wolf.com... From what I understand, the 10th Anniversary expansion is going to be a small "celebratory" expansion. I wouldn't take it to be an industry statement against the 9-12 month schedule. I don't suppose you could give us all a clue as to whether the set will be new cards, reprints, or both? If there's any possibility of taking requests, can I please recommend/suggest/beg/plead that the set includes the following reprints: Minion Tap Blood Doll Spritual Intervenion Shadow Step Telepathic Tracking These are all very invaluable cards that a newbie will have a very hard time acquiring in sufficient quantities, and IMHO the more we see them in print, the better. It's not an "expansion" in fact. We will announce the details of this small, celebratory release after Gehenna's release. I think that anyone (*cough* Orpheus) who is concerned that we are cheating on the stated release window for expansions will have their concerns put to rest. And if not then you can "flame on" with the facts rather than without them! ;) Steve WW

Hear, hear! I fully support this request. Same goes for Direct Intervention and Decapitate, btw.. Actually, Flesh of Marble is relatively ineffective against -some- combat decks. The whole "taking 1 per round" thing will wear on you after awhile. cf. deck I need to post later tonight which went into the finals in Lafayette with 2GW and 7VP -- it handily defeated two different Flesh of Marble decks, using only non-agg damage. DI should've never been printed, but it shouldn't be banned, either. No, it had to be reprinted; the effect is too general-purpose and too strong to limit it in such a way. If you didn't reprint it, you'd end up with a $500 card in no time. So WW took the (D) action to burn the Path of M:tG, instead. It should just never have been printed in the first place. But now that it's here, you can't get rid of it. [ quoted text not captured ]

Well, theorethically you could buy all DIs in circulation and either lock them away or make a nice bonfire of them. I would count that as "getting rid of". But it is really rather theoretical ;-) -- johannes walch

I definitely agree with Minion Tap and Blood Doll, but I personally don't think cards like Shroud of Absence or War Ghoul are any more "niche" than TT, Shadow Step, and Spiritual Intervention. Oh yeah, how about Powerbase: Montreal? TT is really only for AUS combat decks who have problems with S:CE. Considering the versatility of OBT, Shadow Step is hardly necessary to make a competitive Lasombra deck. SI is a bit more important to NEC however and I'd be more willing to agree on this card. >> not sure if he's being sarcastic or not > >Not sure what you mean but I'm being dead serious. New players around here >are having serious trouble with basic deck construction options because they >can't get hold of essential cards, and we'd like to see WW do something >about it... [semi-rant?] No, it just means that personally I'm a little split on the issue. On the one hand, you do want to avoid the M:tG syndrome and alienate new players by having difficult to get "power" cards. But at the same time, you shouldn't pander to the lazy players who want everything served to them on a silver platter. This is a *collectible* game after all, not "get a copy of every card in a set by just buying a starter." Regardless of that however, White Wolf has already done many reprints that have "devalued" certain cards and made them more" widely distributed." Since it's already gone this far, maybe they should just follow through and do that for the rest of the cards. It does seem a bit lop-sided for half the power cards to be easily available in starters while the other half are still extremely difficult to get (say War Ghoul and Shroud for example). And even with cards that previously appeared in a starter, in many cases demand still far outstrips supply (especially in the case of Dreams and DI). [/semi-rant?] Halcyan 2

Shroud, Dreams, Aranthebes - niche? The second should go in every deck. The third could go in every deck. The first is the best Obtenebration stealth in the game and should have been common in the first place.

This >is a *collectible* game after all, not "get a copy of every card in a set by >just buying a starter." CCGs have a lot in common, but in one respect V:TES is very different - NCL. Any rare that's good and good in multiples causes a more serious competitive balance problem (everything else being equal) than needing 4 copies of a card does in another CCG. I completed a set of Bloodlines with my fifth box, what I expected. Now, how many players locally would have to buy 5+ boxes of the set such that I could borrow the 10 copies of one of the R1s I want to field a particular deck? Contrast this with a similar situation when I was playing a CCG with 3CL. If there were never any mistakes in rarity, I could sort of see the "not handing everything out on a silver platter" stance. Can't get 10 copies of Blissful Agony, sure, it's annoying but hardly earthshattering. When Engling Fury, Darkling Trickery, Shroud of Absence, et al are R1s, when back in the day Freak, Embrace, and Grapple were rares, there's an unneeded balance issue.

> TT is really only for AUS combat decks who have problems with S:CE. Well I'd say that Auspex combat simply isn't viable without TT (just like Potence combat isn't viable without IG, and Celerity combat isn't viable without Psyche!) because S:CE is *always* a problem. Given how easy it is to get hold of so many different types of S:CE cards, I think it's pretty harsh that TT is an uncommon that's only ever been found in one set (which may have been reprinted several times, but is still hard to get hold of for some people). In contrast IG and Psyche! have not only been reprinted several times already, but they've also been included as fixed cards in several starter decks. I can only see a wider distribution of TT as not just a good thing, but an essential thing for the health and growth of the game. > Considering > the versatility of OBT, Shadow Step is hardly necessary to make a competitive > Lasombra deck. I can see what you're saying, and I do sympathise, but I also believe that when it comes to core strategies and deck construction, the cards with the highest utility should be more freely available. If a newbie player can't get hold of enough Blood Dolls, how can he expect to compete against a bunch of veterans that pack 4 to 8 of them per deck. Likewise why should we let newbies build and play decks that fail purely because they lack access to a key card that is utilised so commonly and in such large quantities by the rest of us? > Regardless of that however, White Wolf has already done many reprints that have > "devalued" certain cards and made them more" widely distributed." Hmm but here you're moving more into areas of opinion and subjectiveness. I think pretty much everyone here would agree that Blood Doll *is* an essential card to ensure blood gain (and hence survival) in the multi-player environment. And I think most people here would also agree that Auspex combat decks (e.g. Tremere, !Gangrel, Tzimisce) are nowhere near as competitive without TT. However, not everyone would agree that other cards like DotS are actually that essential. Sure, I pack it myself in a few combat decks for more options, but in many decks the space is taken up by other more useful cards. War Ghouls are strong, but they're not *that* strong. Shroud is nice to have, but there are plenty of other Obtenebration stealth cards already so it's hardly essential. To be honest, I'm more bitter about the reverse problem - e.g. cards like Anarch Revolt which *is* a power card, but which is too freely available (and too easily abused) for my liking. That would be a reasonable step, comparable to the revisions to Form of Mist, Majesty, Second Tradition and so on. Either that, or make it a free OOT Trifle. That'll shake the game up! :)

I can only see a wider distribution of TT as not just a good > thing, but an essential thing for the health and growth of the game. Many different disciplines have S:CE, which is a good thing. This game is more then just about combat, but also political, social and supernatural (corruption, sense deps, almost any malk master card). Without S:CE being widely available, this would push combat as the greater theme of this game, and it shouldn't be. S:CE balances out the theme of the game. Besides, there are plenty of holes in the S:CE stragtegy, so it isn't too overpowering. Psyche (cel), IG(pot), fast reaction (aus), hidden lurker (obf), thoughts betrayed (dom), telepathic tracking(aus), DI, rotschreck, perfect clarity(tha), and a few others. This shows the range of screwing over S:CE, which is just as large. Every clan and bloodline has at least one of these disciplines. Does every deck need IG because of S:CE? Hell no! IG also screws over Breath of the Dragon, etcetcetcetc. The point is, not every deck needs to have any of these cards. > I've been experimenting quite a bit recently with Lasombra combat decks, but > they are basically screwed when it comes to maneuvers. So, then, what and who determines what the highest utility card is? If you make it more common and easier to get ahold, then you're going to have to do it to the next highest utility, and then the next, etcetcetc, when does it stop? And not every deck needs (hell, most decks don't) 4-8 blood dolls. Some don't even need or can use any. The number of times newbies with basic decks without many different types of cards have kicked my ass in tournies, and the number of times I've seen pro's fall down, even with a great deck, they're both uncountably high. It's the deck, it's the player, it's luck, it's skill, and it's the opponent's luck, deck, skill, deck type vs. deck type. SAY WHAT? Anarch Revolt is uncommon, has only been in one pre-con and 3 sets and you need usually more then 5 to get the theme of the deck going. Blood Doll on the other hand, common, been in several sets and almost every pre-con, and has so many other cards that are just like it, Tribute, Minion Tap, etcetc, and you're saying it's hard to get a hold of?!?! I just can't see how newbies where you are at or anywhere else are having difficulty picking them up, unless they're not trading over the internet, or have no money for any past pre-cons. The only way I can see it, as they are randomly given out (except for pre-cons), you're the city that hit the bottom end of the average medium, and do not fit the majority of cities, and well, that's just bad luck, sorry. > Regards, > Mike blah... So, let me understand if I have your position right: Telepathic Tracking shouldn't be reprinted because other cards already get around S:CE? I was always under the impression that reprints were to get necessary / in demand cards from older sets back into circulation again, right? Well, TT is necessary for a Tremere / !Tremere / Tzimisce combat. True. Most decks don't need any of those cards. But, OTOH, most _combat_ decks do. If you're a combat deck that can't handle S:CE, you're screwed. > Every clan/deck type/discipline needs to have a weakness. This is the > Lasombra's. I think it's great that someone can make a deck of mostly commons and a few uncommons and have it be competitive, and we all know that luck of the draw and table seating and deal making can have a huge impact on a game regardless of your cards, but the idea that such a deck will be *as good as* one with all the right cards is simply laughable on its face. > SAY WHAT? It's not the every deck needs 4 but that a lot of decks need 4+ and you only get 2 in a Starter (and there's a limit to the number of Starters you want to buy in preference to boosters when starting out). They are not easy to trade for either.
