Does anyone else think it's goofy that there is so much flavor text "said
John Doe the vampire" where most of the original texts from Jyhad were from
bands or dark poetry/stories etc? Does anyone miss that, or is it just me?
Maybe I am the only one that reads that stuff.
And speaking of flavor text, on the card Sight beyond Sight there is a quote
from "Raful al-Zarga, Salubri" Unless I'm nuts, that guy isn't a Salubri at
all...she's a Nagaraja! See, if they weren't busy inventing quotes they
wouldn't have that problem. I mean it's not like its easy to misquote when
you actually have to put effort into looking up something.

The few samples I've seen or heard have been awful. Not sure why the move was
made to WoDy quotes.

Yeah, I noticed the Raful botch today, as I was opening up my box of
boosters. Almost uniformly, the WoD flavor quotes are execrable. WoD
flavor quotes have been in every cardset since Jyhad, TTBOMK, but
they have been increasing in quantity and declining (or at least
failing to improve) in quality since.
I really loved the Josef Stalin quote on Tortured Confession (as well
as the riotous festival of copyright infringement which were the quotes
on the original Jyhad run). In general, I wouldn't think it THAT hard
to find a suitable public domain source for any card needing a good
quote.
I could even put up with the occasional word from Helena Casimir
(Consanguineous Boon, Jyhad/V:tES) here and there, but I don't see
the need to have every Sascha, Francisco and Jimmy opening up their
pie-holes on every other card.

Quotes cost money.
WW is trying to minimize costs on these cards, not increase them.

I heard a rumour years ago that the quotes on jyhad didn't cost money.
and that's why they weren't on the VTES reprints. WotC just slapped the
quotes on without getting anyone's permission.
and, from my point of view, it seems perfectly fine to do that. but,
apparently, it's not entirely legal.
but then, the rumour could be a lie......

Bzzt.
The quotes from V:tES editions on are from classic works of prose and
poetry which are firmly in the public domain. Usually due to age
(sources from 17, 18, and 19th centuries), with some oddball cases
like Uncle Joe, to whom the concept of copyright would be rather
bizarre, I'm sure.

Several of the "look up" quotes were misquoted (and have been
corrected in the later printings).

I much prefered the old stuff too. A lot of the new quotes, are well,
uninteresting. Quotes from songs/prose were the most interesting to me, some
of them were quite amusing, esp given the card it was on.
Even if quotes from other sources cost money, I'm sure there are other, more
interesting quotes that could have come from WoD source material ( like the
Book of Nod ) instead of quotes from Vampires. I guess it does add a bit of
character to the Vampires and clans that are quoted, maybe it's just me, but
it just reads like some vampire rambling...

Hey, I do!!!! As a matter of fact, I would even volunteer to research
quotes for the next editions. The Jyhad flavor text were just great,
and gave a sense of poetry to the game, with quotes from Shelley, Poe,
Shakespeare, Lewis Carroll and even, I believe, the Bible. There
should be no copyright problem with these blokes.
The present quotes are on a level with the Clan novels - empty words
by cardboard characters.
So, what's the problem with a few literary references?? Do you need
help, WW?? I'm right here and would be happy to do it for free.

Sure, remember that quote in the Majesty from Nine inch Nails and
older groups like Sisters of Mercy or Joy Division. Those were great,
as the literacy ones from Poe or even the Bible. Thought there should
be some kind of copyright in there.

I didn't mind, and occasionally liked, the earlier flavor text of poetry and
classical quotes. The quotes from bands were inane but harmless.
But the current flavor text annoys me. I won't say more for fear of offending
whomever is responsible. I merely vote in favor of desisting in future.

A handful of them aren't bad.

Mmmh. Sorry my english. I didn't meant that those bands as"old" ones,
but you know, nowadays, anyone who hasn't published anything in the
past few years are treated as "old" ones.
Yeas, I also remember the day I stood in front of a Shop to buy the
Jesus and Mary Chain's Psychocandy, or the day my cousin lent me
Bauhaus' Bela Lugosi is Dead. yep, I think most of us (here in the
newsgroup, I mean) are "older" enough to remember that bands.

Christ, I never realized so many Goths played V:TES.
Come to clubs that I DJ at and I'll promise to play Vision Thing for
you.
What Joy Division quote was one a card?
I remember the Bow down quote on Majesty and I think there was a
Metalica quote on something or other, but I don't remember Joy
Division. They are my favourite band in the world so I will be most
pissed off if I've missed it.

nope
for me the quote is as important as the picture

Well, at least more cards had flavor text this time around.
Think even one of the cards contained a quote from "The Crow",
which is really cool.
I love good movie quotes..

Sure, a number are kinda cute. And I have no real problem with them.
I think a lot of people quite like the real quotes thing, however. And
White Wolf popularise such things in their World of Darkness rulesbooks
- many sections begin with a semi-relevant quote.
