I was wondering how rötschreck works when the acting vamp played dawn operation and in the resulting combat uses hand damage? What if the acting vamp dodges but has a wolf companion, or has played a carrion crows? thanks, JW.

Assuming that he is blocked by a vampire (not an ally): When the acting vampire announced his hand strike, he is "attempting to use aggravated damage against a vampire". As such, Rotschreck can be played on the blocking vampire, ending combat and sending the blocking vampire to torpor. > What if the > acting vamp dodges but has a wolf companion, or has played a carrion > crows? Then the minion (the acting vampire) is not "attempting to use aggravated damage against a vampire" - the damage of the effects of the Wolf Companion or of the Carrion Crows is not considered to be damage done by the minion; it is "environmental" damage. As such, it is not sufficient to allow Rotschreck. [RTR 13-NOV-1996] -- L. Scott Johnson (vte...@wizards.com) VTES Net.Rep for Wizards of the Coast. Thus usable only by the *blocking* vampire? Which would really only switch the words 'blocking' and 'acting' for the whole paragraph, but making a rather large difference in play... In a Dawn Op'ed combat between two vampires, I believe both are legal targets for Rotschreck (since both will have agg damage pointed at them if they both declare hand strikes). You're correct that the acting vamp's controller can't usually play Rotschreck (short of Madness Network or some such), but someone else could play Rotschreck on the blocking vamp. Or the acting vamp. But probably not both. (I'm not quite sure what the earliest opportunity is to play Rotschreck; if it's on declaration of hand strike the blocking vamp would be the first one to become a legit target...) Josh so, win any games lately with that IG/Walk of Flame deck? [ quoted text not captured ]

It could be played by a third Methuselah to send the blocking vampire to torpor - do not pass go, do not collect $200. -- James Coupe (Prince of Mercia, England) Vampire: Elder Kindred Network http://madnessnetwork.hexagon.net

Earliest opportunity is on declaration, yes. [ quoted text not captured ]
