Malkavian Time Auction: -is each Methuselah required to bid? -if so, what do you do about ties? Can a Methuselah bid "zero" to get around being forced to bid? "...Methuselahs bid pool...": -for any "...Methuselahs bid pool..." card, must the Methuselah actually be able to pay the wager, or can they overbid themselves and thereby oust themselves? I realize that 'you cannot play a card whose cost cannot be paid' and 'you cannot pay part of a cost' but what about "If, between the time a card is played and the time the cost is paid, you no longer can pay the cost, then no cost is paid and the card is burned without effect."? That would seem to indicate that you (or anyone) could bid more pool than they have and not get screwed at all in the resolution, although this is a wacky timing question (and possibly an ethical play question) and if you could explain to me how these kinds of cards work (noting rules listed above) I would greatly appreciate it! Eldritch Glimmer: -why is the phrase "Usable at long range" even on the card? Aren't all "xR damage" attacks usable at long range? Should the phrase read "Only usable at long range." (and therefore should be errattaed), or is it written correctly, as just a useless phrase? Rötschreck: -is the *playing* of Wolf Claws, etc., enough to trigger the Rötschreck, or do you wait to play the Rötschreck during the strike phase when you announce your now aggravated (hand) strike? Tragic Love Affair: -if there are no other Toreadors in play and the Methuselah that owns the Affaired Toreador does not have the edge, does the Methuselah have to wait until one of those conditions is met to pay 1 pool to move the card? Can a Methuselah bid "zero" to get > around being forced to bid? > > "...Methuselahs bid pool...": "... other Methuselahs may bid pool ..." It is optional. If a Meth chooses to bid, it must be greater than the last bid, as usual for bids. > -for any "...Methuselahs bid pool..." card, must the Methuselah actually be > able to pay the wager, or can they overbid themselves and thereby oust > themselves? [... snip rules on paying costs ...] She must be able to pay whatever is required by the bid - she can bid five more than her pool for a Temptation of Greater Power, for instance, or bid twice her pool for her own vampire in a Hostile Takeover. The bid is not a cost, so is unconcerned with the rules on paying costs. > Eldritch Glimmer: > -why is the phrase "Usable at long range" even on the card? The latter, for clarity on the "+X damage" part, I assume. > Rötschreck: > -is the *playing* of Wolf Claws, etc., enough to trigger the Rötschreck, or > do you wait to play the Rötschreck during the strike phase when you announce > your now aggravated (hand) strike? You must make an attempt to *use* aggravated damage, by card text, so (in the case of Claws) you would have to "wait" until you have announced both your strike as "hand strike" and have played inferior Wolf Claws. > Tragic Love Affair: > -if there are no other Toreadors in play and the Methuselah that owns the > Affaired Toreador does not have the edge, does the Methuselah have to wait > until one of those conditions is met to pay 1 pool to move the card? She cannot move it if there is no Toreador to move it. She cannot burn it unless she has the Edge (and burns the Edge). It would be burned if the target Toreador was burned, of course. :-) -- LSJ (vte...@white-wolf.com) V:TES Net.Rep for White Wolf, Inc. I realize that 'you cannot play a card whose cost cannot be I believe that you cannot OVERbid and oust yourself. you can bid exactly the amount of pool you have, and thereby oust yourself, but if you have 6 pool, you cannot bid 7. Contrast with Temptation of Greater Power, which allows you to be credited up to 5 pool on your bids, and Hostile Takeover, which allows the owner of the victim vampire to pay half rounded up (and some time ago there was a clarification made on Hostile Takeover that yes, the owner could bid more pool than he had since he was effectively only bidding half). >paid' and 'you cannot pay part of a cost' but what about "If, between the >time a card is played and the time the cost is paid, you no longer can pay >the cost, then no cost is paid and the card is burned without effect."? The cost for the card is involved with the playing of a card in the first place. The cost to play MTA is 0 pool, paid by the person playing the Master. Nobody else has anything to do with the cost of the card - everything else is just "bidding", and barring card text to the contrary, bids must be paid immediately. >Eldritch Glimmer: > -why is the phrase "Usable at long range" even on the card? Aren't all "xR >damage" attacks usable at long range? Should the phrase read "Only usable >at long range." (and therefore should be errattaed), or is it written >correctly, as just a useless phrase? A number of cards have "Usable at long range" written on them, even though they are also usable at close range - similar to some Master out-of-turn cards (Absolution of the Diabolist) that have "You may play this card during your turn." written on them. I imagine the design team wanted to make absolutely sure that it was understood that the strike was usable at any range. yes, it is a useless phrase. >Rötschreck: > -is the *playing* of Wolf Claws, etc., enough to trigger the Rötschreck, or >do you wait to play the Rötschreck during the strike phase when you announce >your now aggravated (hand) strike? As soon as there is an attempt to use aggravated damage against a vampire, that triggers the Rotschreck. So if you played Wolf Claws before range, that would not be enough as no attempt has been made - at long range, you wouldn't be able to attempt. Once you get to close range and announce your hand strike, THEN the attempt has been made, and Rotschreck may be played immediately (pre-empting strike resolution). from the rulings: "Rotschreck is played when the attempt to use aggravated damage is announced. If the attempt is in the form of a strike, Rotschreck is played during the strike announcement phase (before any damage prevention can be played). It can be played after the other strike is announced, however. [LSJ 19990217]" As a side question to LSJ: Card text on Direct Intervention says you must cancel a card as it is played. This would mean that when a Wolf Claws is played, you would have to cancel the claws IMMEDIATELY, and couldn't wait to see if your opponent played Rotschreck, right? ...since after Rotschreck is played, the "as it is played" stage for Wolf Claws has already passed. >Tragic Love Affair: > -if there are no other Toreadors in play and the Methuselah that owns the >Affaired Toreador does not have the edge, does the Methuselah have to wait >until one of those conditions is met to pay 1 pool to move the card? He can move the card only if there is another Toreador in play to move it to. He may burn the card completely by giving up the Edge (card text). -- Derek Jack-Booted Thug of Atlanta
