Nephandus (Mage) [Sabbat:R, Tenth:A, Third:R]
Cardtype: Ally
Clan: Tremere antitribu
Cost: 2 pool
Mage with 2 life. 0 strength, 1 bleed.
The Nephandus may strike for 1R damage. The Nephandus gets an optional
press each combat. Each strike or damaging effect made against the
Nephandus by the opposing minion during combat inflicts 1 less damage.
The Nephandus may burn a vampire in torpor to gain 1 life as a (D)
action.
Zombie [DS:C2, FN:PG]
Cardtype: Retainer
Clan: Giovanni
Cost: 1 blood
Zombie with 2 life.
When the minion with this retainer is in combat, the opposing minion
takes 1 additional damage during strike resolution if range is close.
As a +1 stealth action, the vampire with this retainer may burn the
Zombie to gain 2 blood.
So if a minion in combat with a zombie fighting nephandus should in
theory inflict 1 damage, modified by the zombie to inflict 1
additional, while nephandus reduces the original inflict 1, resulting
in a net 1 damage to the mage.
Both Zombie and Mage share the same style verbage. increase damage/
decrease damage.
as a comparison a Wolf companion or Murder of Crows inflicts 1 damage,
not additional damage.
So is the the following true
Minion A, zombie equiped, does an effective 1 damage to nephandus at
close range.

Yes. Damage from the Zombie is not affected by Nephandus' text, since the Zombie
is not the opposing minion. Similarly for Wolf Companion.
Neither Zombie nor Wolf increases the damage the minion inflicts with his
strike, however.

A somehow related question.... does Nephandus' text affect Aeron's
special ability? I would quess no since its worded rather similarly to
wolf companion, but its text on the vampire card itself so wanting to
check.

Remember to snip the unused quoted material.
Your guess is correct.

Yes, but only because, as Scott says, the damage is not from the
minion. Same goes for Wolf Companion, Carrion Crows, etc.
The way Nephandus is worded is actually kind of stupid. As far as I'm
aware, the only things he reduces damage from are strikes and Twisting
the Knife. I guess it would be clearer if he just reduced strike
damage, since Twisting the Knife is completely unplayable.
