So that's pretty much the question. Fact is : it's always nice to know where
you're ranking among international players, but it really doesn't mean the
same if you're, say, 200th in 400 players or in 2000 !!
So, can we have an (approximative) "official" number of the VEKN tournament
players ?
Thanks.

A quick search of all US players reveals that there are 571 players
listed, of which 333 have a rating greater than zero.
Feel free to extrapolate to other continents, I think your final number
will be closer to 2000 than it is to 400.

How do you do that search ? I can only have access to the 50 best of each
country on the VEKN rankings page...

I'd guess somewhere in the 1000, but I'd like to have a more precise idea
anyway.
Thanks for your input Rob.

On the search page, I went to "View Rankings by Country and City" then
selected a country and left the city set to "All". This will be a lot
more difficult in Europe as we've only got three countries in North
America. Also note, I searched the constructed rankings.
Probably the best option is to wait for the official word, as I have no
idea how up to date the online database is. (Particularly in regards
to players with a rating of 0)

PS - There were 208 Canadian players listed, of which 117 had a rating
greater than 0
and there were 30 Mexican players listed, of which 21 had a rating
greater than 0.

Currently there are almost 11,000 registered vekn members. Knock off
100 for duplicates and bogus entries. (I'm currently doing an
audit...)
But, lets just examine calendar year 2006, concentrating on Number of
Events. Sanctioned, rated events, both limited and constructed.
(exclude Pre-releases, Storyline and any other non sanctioned event.)
The numbers are based on Vekn ID. I am almost finished with an audit
of the registry and player history. Cleaning up folks with two numbers
and games in both, consolidating, correcting etc. Also want to
mention that these numbers come from tournaments reported to me. There
are still some that happen that don't get included.
2357 unique people played in a tournament this year. (Which has a few
weeks left)
1279 played in more than one event.
1078 only played in one event.
93 played in more than 10 events.
In order to even HAVE a ranking you must play in 8 sanctioned, rated
events in an 18 month period starting with today (Dec 7) and moving
back to June 7th, 2005.
For that 18 month period
3209 unique folks played in an event.
1856 played in more than one.
1353 played in only 1.
222 played in more than 10.
uh.... yeah... well. I hope that helps to answer your question.

Robyn, you're my Angel !! ;-) Couldn't hope for a better answer.
Now I gotta reach your place you in the rankings ;-) (you're 11 places
before me !). And did you notice that the guy just before you right now is
the "hero" of Turino, the great swiss player ?
Kisses to the Tatus,

I thought that was UP TO 8 sanctioned, rated tournaments that will be
counted? As far as I understood rating starts with the first tournament
somebody plays.

You have to have at least 8 tournaments under your belt (within an 18
month period) before you can get a rating. Your 8 top events, if you
play more, count toward that rating.

hi Robyn! I remember you mentioning this before... but in practice, it
looks like the database isn't requiring 8 tournaments to create ratings
at the moment? To pick an example rating out of the US list because
it's easy, Chris Berg (#2120037) has only 4 events appearing in the VEKN
database, but is ranked ... what, #241 in the world, but substantially
higher in the US listings (which is how I came across his entry). And
two of them are limited tournaments, and two constructed, so he actually
has reasonably good ratings in both (because he's won one of each).
Seems like a good thing to me - maybe the functionality that you didn't
think was there actually is? Hopefully it's not that something is
horribly messed up and the ratings aren't actually "right". :-)

Absolutely! I find it rather discouraging for new player if they only
get ranked after 8 tournaments in 18mo. Heck, some even play less than
that number so they will never get ranked.
And since there is no advantage in having fewer rated tournaments (as it
was before) I see no problem with the current status.

Here's my opinion:
Bleh! Who cares? I can run maybe two VEKN rated tournaments a year in
my area, those are the only ones that get run within 400 miles of me or
any of my people, and when I run them and submit the results, the results
have more often than not failed to get entered no matter what I do. Why
would I *possibly* care at what point the random rating number becomes
random enough to calculate a random ranking number?
