If Zane is already contesting a prince title, can he try to receive
(and contest) another one?
Zane
Camarilla Primogen: If Zane is not a prince, he can call a referendum
to receive (and contest) the title held by a prince in play as a +1
stealth political action.

Yes. If the referendum passes, he immediately yields the old title, of course.

Oh. So he gets the second title, thereby forfeiting the first contest,
and then starts contesting the second one?
I thought he would just be contesting both of them instead.

No, anytime a vampire cannot legally have a title he is contesting, he
immediately yields it. This can happen if a contested Prince changes
sects, or, as in this case, if he gains a new title. The other
contesting vampire gains his title back during his untap phase
(assuming it is not contested by someone else at that point).

Rulebook section 10:
If a vampire with a contested title (see Contested Titles, sec. 4.2) gains a
title, he immediately yields the contested title.

So he "gains" the second one and then loses it to the contest?
I thought that when you contest something - like equipment - it never
enters play before contesting and therefore you cannot use any effects
before that.
If my prey controls Alexandra and I bring in my copy of Alexandra to
contest it, do I get to untap one of my other Toreadors before the
contest?

No, he gains the second one and immmediately ends the contest for the
first one. As he gets a new title, he loses the old title, thus he
cannot contest it anymore

No, she is never in play for you to able to use her special.

If he didn't get the title at least in part, it wouldn't be his to
contest. It just then immediately goes off to being contested. You
don't actually get to use it for anything.
However, since a vampire can only "claim" one title, the previous title
is removed/yielded.
"Claim" - the term used in 4.2 - might help you here. Winning a Praxis
Seizure gives you a claim to the new title (which might be contested).
All previous claims on this vampire go away, contested or otherwise.

No. See the long-standing rulings on (for example) contesting an Elder
Library and hand size.
