What I learned at the NAC

Ok, NAC is come and gone, and I have been thinking about it over the last day. a) Free liquor for 2 hours is really cool. We should make large tournaments be mandatory at Embassy Suites. b) Playing VTES is really fun. Even when at the moment it doesn't really feel fun. c) Should have played Arika in the LCQ, not Hermanas. d) I don't play enough to keep up with the metagame. What I learned was that several of my current decks don't have enough stealth or combat to do what they want to do effectively. And if you don't have stealth, you have to have combat. If you have both, you will probably do ok. e) Ira, Ben Peal and Ben Swainbank were all staying in the same room. They all made it to the NAC finals. Must have been something in the water in room 345 I guess. That's my excuse, and I'm sticking to it. f) My Tzimisce toolbox deck needs a couple less War Ghouls and more Plasmic Forms, and one more Path. g) Meeting everyone was great. People who I had never seen pictures of didn't look anything like what I expected them to. Jay Kristoff and Cameron Kennedy from Red Deer are really tall. h) Lawrence Snelly is 1) a stand-up guy, 2) a great artist and 3) a fan of the game/genre. One thing I didn't learn - if he plays VTES himself. i) Having the NAC the weekend before a new awesome set is released is just incredible - lots of Lords of Night draft and sealed, and we all got to see that there is going to be a lot of game-changing stuff in the set. Be sure to get your orders in now, because I think distributors are going to sell out of this one. Think of how much Sword of Caine you bought. Multiply it by at least 5, that's how good it is. Other things I learned I must have already sublimated. Big ups to: - Ben Peal for winning. Matt Wedge, Kevin Mergen, Ben Swainbank, and Ira Fay for finalizing. - LSJ for judging; as well as for creating and husbanding this game over the last decade. I'm pretty sure most of us owe him a debt that is in no way covered by WW's salary. - Oscar for all the work he did over the week. He played hard, but he was working too. Finally HUGE PROPS to Mike Courtois and Rob Goudie for organizing, hustling, marketing, and taking the risk to make this a great experience for me and I'm sure for everyone else who was there. (If they'd serve the drinks at a place we could play the game, I'd be OK with it. That was 2002 in Milwaukee, and I still have fond memories...) Everything else you said I can pretty much go with. During V:TES we focus on V:TES. During drinking we focus on drinking. -Robert

[ quoted text not captured ] Indeed. Less talking, more drinking. :D

Looks like Ken Meyer Jr is finally getting to master the techniques he's currently using (about time...), while Snelly still is far from it. He was better at Photoshop art IMHO. This being said, it's great to have the presence of game artists at a convention, I hope it will happen sometime in Europe. -- "All Hail the Lords of the Night !" Orpheus

I don't believe I had any problem focusing on both, though I only won one tournament. What I should have had was more confidence in the deck I played Saturday (that didn't do so well that day) and played it on Sunday anyway. Considering the tables and seating I had on Sunday, I believe I could have made the damn finals. Oh, well, was great fun, all in all.
