Portsmouth Eye of Hazimel Tournament report, November 2002 13 Methuselahs gathered in the function room of the Old Vic pub on Sunday afternoon, the 10th of November, to squabble over the Eye of Hazimel, or not, as turned out more frequently to be the case. 13 was not bad but less than i expected thanks to the no-show of such lightweights as Barney Bakerchamp, Jon Cooper and Pierre Rebstock. Here's who actually turned up: Rob "Number One" Treasure from Southampton, fielding his very sweet Tyler abuses the Archon deck [2/3 Brujah crypt]. Michael Eichler from USAF Ramstein, playing a Lasombra Blood Depletion deck. He has posted it under "Thoughts on the Portsmouth Eye", so check it out - in overall effect it is kinda like a cryptic mission/theft deck, and it's really not bad. Garry Scarlett from Portsmouth, playing a Lazverinus rush deck. John Keech from Portsmouth, playing a Stanislawa deck. Jack Drever from Southampton, playing a Giovanni bash/bleed deck. Jack is 15. Matthew Eakins from, erm, help me Matt. He is one of my project students, and quite coincidentally is learning to play VTES, using a group 2/3 Ventrue deck. Matt Stockton from Portsmouth, playing a new Tremere deck. Paul Reid-Bowen from Bath, playing a Tzimisce deck which had more stealth-bleed and less intercept than the average such deck, plus Crimson Fury. Legbiter, James McClellan, me, playing my new Malkavian Derange/Dementia suck you dry deck, of which more below. James Coyne, another of my project students, playing a Setite/Baali deck. Sam Marsh aka Jazzbeaux from Bath, playing an Assamite thaumaturgy deck with Lucas Haan. Well, he did say he would. i never got to play against it but apparently it was quite good. Graham Smith from Bath, playing a Ravnos bleed/bash deck that seemed never to have any intercept or Rush. Once he finally got into combat we got to see what the point of the deck was - Illusions of the Kindred, Horrid Reality, Flamethrower, Trap, Amria .... great stuff! Michael McClellan aka Anklebiter playing a Kiasyd deck with Lasombra spice. We played two tables of 4 and one of five, two rounds and a final [we said we would do three rounds in the pre-publicity, but after discussion with the players i took it down to two so that people wouldn't get shouted at so much by their partners]. We used the multi-judge system and did not allow people to play twice on the five player-table. i felt that i had a slight advantage in knowing the broad outlines of everyone's crypt and i offered to sit the match out on that account, but it was felt not to be such an advantage and that i should play [i was careful to choose my deck BEFORE looking at everyone else's, and i got Michael to verify its crypt's legality]. Here's how the rounds panned out: Round 1 Table 1 1. Matt Stockton 1VP 2. John Keech 0VP 3. Rob Treasure 4VP and Game Win 4. Sam March 0VP 5. Michael Eichler 0VP Round 1 Table 2 1. Jack Drever 0VP 2. Garry Scarlett 1VP 3. James Coyne 0VP 4. Paul Reid-Bowen 3VP and Game Win Round 1 Table 3 1. Matt Eakins 0VP 2. Legbiter 3VP and Game Win 3. Anklebiter 1VP 4. Graham Smith 0VP ********************** Round 2 Table 1 1. Anklebiter 1VP 2. James Coyne 0VP 3. Graham Smith 0VP 4. Legbiter 4VP and Game Win 5. Matt Eakins 0VP Round 2 Table 2 1. Jack Drever 0VP 2. Matt Stockton 0VP 3. Paul Reid-Bowen 0VP 4. Michael Eichler 4 VP and Game Win Round 2 Table 3 1. Rob Treasure 4VP and Game Win 2. John Keech 0VP 3. Sam Marsh 0VP 4. Gary Scarlett 0VP *********************** All of that led to the final which went as follows: 1. Paul Reid-Bowen 0VP 2. Legbiter 4VP, Tournament Win and the Eye of Hazimel 3. Michael Eichler 0VP 4. Rob Treasure 0VP 5. Anklebiter 1VP Here is My Deck. In my hands this deck has never lost a game. In fact the only time it has ever lost a game is when Barney Bakerchamp borrowed it for the London Minicon, and the only reason it lost then was because Barney needed to sweep/got greedy [take your pick]. Both Barney and Rob have helped me to tweak it so thank-you, Gentlemen! Deck name: "i'm sorry, did i break your concentration?" Description: Brit uber-sleaze takeover/bloat deck, based on new wording of Derange, multiple master phases, Heidelberg and Malkavian Dementia. A similar deck has been posted to the NG, but this is not a clone or derivative of that, just another case of Great minds thinking Alike. CRYPT [12 cards] 3 x Leandro 2 x Gilbert Duane 3 x Lucian Mariel, Lady Thunder Anatole, Prophet of Gehenna 2 x Greger Anderssen LIBRARY [90 cards] MASTERS [29] 8 x Malkavian Dementia 2 x Heidelberg Castle, Germany 2 x The Parthenon 9 x Minion Tap Legendary Vampire 4 x Zillah's Valley Dominate Secure Haven Temptation of Greater Power ACTIONS [12] 9 x Derange 3 x Govern the Unaligned VOTES [4] Rumours of Gehenna Dramatic Upheaval Protect Thine Own Kindred Restructure ALLIES [1] Muddled Vampire Hunter ACTION MODIFIERS [17] 2 x Swallowed by the Night 4 x Conditioning 3 x Faceless Night Forgotten Labyrinth 3 x Lost in Crowds 2 x Spying Mission 2 x Elder Impersonation REACTIONS [27] 8 x Forced Awakening 8 x Obedience Enhanced Senses 3 x Telepathic Misdirection 2 x My Enemy's Enemy 2 x Deflection 2 x Redirection Eagles' Sight ********************** Other stuff about this tournament ....... well, the Eye of Hazimel did make an impact - Michael Eichler used it to sweep his table in the second heat, and Michael McClellan used it to win his VP in the final. i wonder if this tournament had the lowest average age of any ever held .... two teenagers out of 13 players, must be close! i'm SURE this is the first ever father-son 1-2 in Jyhad tournament history. As for tournament moments, in my history report i am going to mention the following milestones on the Malkavian Road to victory: The Madness of Arika [second heat]. Gratiano [michael M] got deranged Passed the Derange card to Arika [Matt E] Arika got taken over by Malkavian Dementia [Legbiter, first master] Arika was Minion tapped to 1 [Second master, thanks to rumours of gehenna passed while Gratiano was mad] Arika bled her true owner for 6, thanks to Conditioning - net pool swing of 26. The Treachery of Legbiter [final] In the final, Rob's Tyler had disarmed Michael E's Talley who was thus going to torpor. Rob asked how i would vote if he Amaranth-diablerised Talley. i said i would vote for him to live. He diablerised. i voted that Tyler burned. This appalling lower-than-a-snake's-belly manoeuver pretty much gave me the game, and tournament. Thanks to White Wolf and Marshall McCrombie of Southsea Models for uber-generous prize support, and to the Old Vic for letting us use their function room for free; props also to Matt Stockton through whom the venue was organised. Many thanks to all who turned up and especially the new players, upon whom i heaped, i say positively HEAPED the largesse of White Wolf, and i think they, and everyone, had a good time in consequence.

It was at this point in the second game that i knew that things were not going well at all. But still i had a great time, a good laugh, got to meet some new people, and best of all got loads of freebies (always good) i can't wait for the next tournament.

Fair point, slight breach of Netiquette for which i take full responsibility, and apologise. i was cooking, is the feeble pull-down excuse of the night. This WAS a good storyline moment, so let me repeat it for the group. Julia Prima got into a combat with the Tzimisce, got burned. Anklebiter's Influence: Mysterious Return of Julia Anklebiter's untap: burn Edge to get the Eye Anklebiter's master: Julia is Legendary vampire [so hard to kill, geddit????] Anklebiter's minion phase: bleed poor old Paul for 8, 000, 000, 000, 000 or near enough, at one quintillion stealth. And your mother! Quality play, props to you, dear boy.

I'm sure they might have thought it so just before Tyler ripped them a large new one. Have some respect for the undead man :o)

I've probably missed something here, but can I get this clarified by someone (Maybe yourself Rob?) 1) Tyler gets made an Archon 2) The Archon card goes to the Ash Heap, and so is not in play 3) As the card is not in play, the rush ability can be used mulitple times as the wording of the NRA is: New Rules - No Repeat Actions The new base rules incorporate a variation of the No Repeat Actions special floor rule from the V:EKN tournament rules. Instead of restricting repeats by (a sometimes difficult to define) type, a minion cannot bleed twice in a turn take a political action twice in a turn use the same action card twice in a turn take the action allowed by a card in *play* twice in a turn by the new rules, with no restrictions on, for example, hunting or equipping (assuming the minion can untap, of course). The last item (card in play) includes any special ability the minion may have. ...and the minion has no special ability, it is granted by the Archon card, which is not in play. If this is the case, I might just have to start looking at combat all over again. Cheers Andy "Slytherin" Brown VEKN Setite Ruler of Cambridge SET awakens, watch out all non-believers

So here is ANOTHER Storyline moment: Tyler became Brujah justicar and Archon, acquired the Rowan Ring and went completely apeshit on: The Assamites [twice] The Lasombra The Tremere The Gangrel [twice] The Ventrue Antitribu Killing off and burning a total of 20-odd vampires, who included Parnassus, Al-Ashrad, Ramiro, Talley the Hound, Merril Mollitor, Stanislava, Iliana, Lazverinus, Badger, Peter Blaine ... any others that anyone can remember? I don't know the details of the deck in question, but from this newgroup I got the impression that it used Rowan Ring w/Celerity to torporize, and then Amaranth. Nice. I wouldn't be surprised that people would rely on fortitude and/or other prevents, at least over here (Helsinki) there is a lot of fortitude in the current metagame. I'm quite amused to see a deck concept that totally screws such decks :). I'm a bit more surprised about the apparent lack of S:CE, one would think that once Tyler's rush+amaranth action fails that's it for that turn. Or did the deck have some method for multi-rush? //Petri

Pysche! did for S:CE, Blur pretty much did for prevention, getting superior fortitude and Freak Drive helps, her special, and Archon text meant that it can steam roller the table. Weaknesses are getting everything in place, needs votes for Archon, Rowan Ring for efficient torporing but Disarms help there... Thats why Legbiters Deal breaking isn't surprising - given the chance to remove Tyler, with no particular reward to not do so means she burns in my book. Jazzbeaux > > //Petri
