First, can a vampire that is contested (not title) be attacked by
a Bum's Rush or other directed action attack? If so what happens to this
vampire if it is killed?
Second, in which phase do you yield a contested card? Is it only
allowable in the Untap phase?
Thanks

I'm not Tom, but these questions have been answered already.
No, the contested vamp is out of play, can't be attacked or affected
except be card that specifically say they affect contested vamps.
Yes only during the untap phase and the player with the last remaining
uncontested vamp doesn't get his till his untap phase.

Contested cards cannot be interacted with in any way. The only game
effect they will have is to put new copies of that card into contention
as well. Specifically, you cannot Bum's Rush a contested vampire.

Contested cards can only be yielded during the yielding player's untap
phase. If yielding such a card leaves just one copy behind, the player
who controls that copy won't get it back until their next turn.

Where is this mentioned in the rules? I want to be able to prove it
to people.

Yup.

It follows implicitly from the phrase "Alternatively [to paying pool in
untap] you can deice to..." on page 15, under "Contested cards".

"You lose one blood from your blood pool during your untap phase for each
of your contested cards. Alternatively, you can decide to discard your
contested cards..." The "alternatively" means it is an option to paying
pool, not something you can do at any time.

So... no directed attack; Blood Dolls on the contested vampire cannot
be used; transfers cannot be spent to pull blood back from a controlled
vampire (a maneuver I think would make for more-interesting games, IMHO),
minions cannot reclaim equipment, etc.
And if and when the vampire is yielded by its first holder, all cards
(titles, equipment, etc) are lost, n'est-ce pas?

All correct.

All cards on the copy which was yielded are burned, yes. Equipment and
such on the other copy will be fine.

Thanks for the quick response (! :-). If you would allow me to change
the question a little...
What about a vampire in torpor? A vampire encountering another vampire
in torpor may rescue it or diablerize it. But may it also claim equipment?
May another minion encounter such a vampire and claim equipment? May
an opposing minion encounter such a vampire and claim equipment? A
vampire in torpor may not hunt at Hunting Grounds, but may he or she
use a Blood Doll to slowly strengthen himself or herself to eventually
come out of torpor?
(Yes, this came up in our Celerian-vs-Protean game last night. ;-) The
Protean and I kept sending each other to torpor, but he managed to keep
getting out through the use of a Blood Doll on one of his vamps.
Really irritating, but I think it was legal...)

The only default actions which can be used on things in torpor is to
encounter a vampire there, or to use an equip action to move equipment
from one of your vampires in torpor to a ready minion. You can never
use an equip action to grab another player's equipment.

In general, master cards can be played on vampires in torpor, and the
player can make use of those cards, so yes you could Blood Doll a vampire
in torpor. In general, minion cards (or actions provided through master
cards) cannot be used on vampires in torpor, though exceptions will be noted.
