Science Fiction Age magazine this month has WOTC ads featuring art from Jyhad and The Dark (plus Magic and Legends). Unlike the preview in the Duellist's Supplement, there is no text on any of the cards, just artwork, and artist credits.

A much cooler magazine, in my opinion. Games also has a review of Magic, which is very favorable. TM.

Saw Dark & Jyhad at Origins. Both look nice. If I wasn't rep'ing for Steve Jackson Games & running the Car Wars World Champs., I'd 've scrwled down some more data. A quick note for Jyhad -- Justicars KICK UNDEAD ASS!! Best, -CS

Games also has a review of Magic, which is very favorable. I agree with all of this. The only problem I see is the same misinformation about production numbers that was given out to newspapers more than a month earlier (either that, or all the well-accepted data on the net is wrong). It says more than 200 million cards have been sold, and the number is likely to reach a billion by the end of the year. These production numbers have been bothering me for a while, and I can't find a way to reconcile them. Now, 10M limited + 40M unlimited + 5M AN + 15M AQ + 35M Legends = 105M, so only if there have already been 95M revised cards sold can there be 200M already sold (and the same figures were published in newspaper stories around the country back before Legends came out). WotC reps have said there would be roughly 150M cards in the revised printing, and this probably means 150M before the next revision (supposedly, the plates will not be updated until September) so it is unlikely that that many have already been sold (maybe they mean "sold to distributors," including those cards that haven't even been shipped yet?) Anyway, the dark will have another 65M cards, and fallen empires will have who-knows-how-much (let's say 100M). There will also be the next revised printing, with who-knows-how-many cards (say 500M, at the rate the game seems to be growing) -- maybe half those will be sold by the end of the year, which would make a grand total of 670M by the end of the year.

Well, if we stack them in neat piles, given that the 60 cards in a starter deck (after the rulebook is removed) are about 3/4 inch thick, 2.5 inches wide and 3.5 inches long, 9 cards roughly fill 1 cubic inch. If we're using the 200M figure claimed to be already sold, that's 12860 cubic feet, or a cube 23 feet on an edge. (or a pyramid-shape 19 feet tall, with a 45-foot square base) If we have a billion cards to work with, the volume is 64300 cubic feet, and our mountain could be 34 feet tall, with a 75-foot square base. Now, since we probably don't have the patience to stack all those cards neatly, and we assume they were just dumped in a big pile, the volume increases a lot. It's possible that our mountain is more like 60 feet tall, and 150 feet across the base.

Also, we'll need to measure the deformation equation for the cards, as well as expansion due to the obvious heat generated by all the pasty-faced Magic fiends who would immediately decend upon such a mountain in a number rivaled only by the masses who flocked to Devil's Tower in Close Encounters (was that the name of that film?) Well, for all you or I know (I haven't asked), the 1 billion number is correct, and your guesstimate of the number of Gathering cards to be prevented after August is more like 800 million. Given that Magic is going to be mass marketed at some point, this wouldn't particularly surprise me. Tom Wylie rec.games.deckmaster Network Representative for aahz@hal.com Wizards of the Coast, Inc.
