meat hook questions

if I don't use the meat hook can the opposing minion still strike to destroy it? i'm guessing yes... but what if i dodge? ah well i suppose these are silly questions as usual but...isn't meat hook amazing despite how many vampires have potence? might actually take out a few of the traps in the horrid form assamite deck after all...now if i could just get it to bleed well...
